GPU Temps Confused
I have a Sapphire HD7770 Ghz Edition, 1GB. It is over-clocked by me to 1060 on the GPU and 5040 on the memory. These are above factory values. Because I can't afford a massive GPU I have to make do with what I have by over-clocking. But it leaves me with a problem, often when playing games it reaches about 90-105oc when operating. Then fan levels go up to about 100% and the temp stays at around 90-92oc. I was wondering what the easiest solution to this problem is? Thanks :)

Gtx 970. Nobody I've ever seen, or read about has not had heat issues with a 290x, and xfire 290x almost requires full open loop watercooling as the heat from them is similar to basically running a hair dryer on high heat inside your case.

Okay thanks. If you was going to chose a card for your self depending on my specs what would you choose? AMD FX-6300 CPU @ 4.3GHz, Kingston Ram 8GB 1844MHz, Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 Mobo, Corsair CX550M PSU (Can be upgraded with ease to about 800). Thanks :)

don't do either, you can get similar performance from doing this for far less -

R9 290 Xfire

GTX 970 SLI.

That is a better option. I would personally go for the GTX 970 option for their power efficiency and low temps, whilst the R9 Radeons run quite hot and draw lots of power. I own an R9 290X Windforce 3X OC and love it, though for what I payed for it ($775) it wasn't worth it (jumped into it first day it came out, used to own a 7990 and before that one GTX 680). Currently I am waiting for the R9 390X or for the price cut of the R9 295X2, if the price cut happens I may get one then have a 3 way Xfire R9 290X setup.

Yeah I might be upgrading at Christmas time. Getting an 290X or 280X in CrossFire. But thats only a possibility because I need a new monitor more than anything. If one comes up cheap enough before then, then it'll be mission go! Thanks :)

I would personally stop there, the 7770 isn't the best of overclocking cards but is a great card for the value it is. Running at those temperatures you are shortening it's robust lifetime but if your planning on upgrading soon you probably don't mind.

Okay thank you for answering peeps :)  I'll look into the benchmarking when I get a few hours free time. And as it goes for the TIM I've ordered some Cooler Master Ic-essential E2 Gold Edition. Going to do both the GPU and CPU.

The 7770 is an older card, and chances are the TIM is probably older too. It may be time to look into repasting, and with a good TIM you may bring those temps down some. Until then, I'd suggest dropping the OC back to default, you are doing yourself and the gpu no favors with those temps, and may even be throttled.

Hello,

to be honest by this overclock I doubt you get more than 1-2 FPS increase in games so ask yourself is it worth it?

Just to confirm my theory run a couple of benchmarks of your favorite games with the overclock and then on "stock" speeds to see the difference. If I was right about the FPS increase then you should probably consider an upgrade or lowering the game settings.
