What do I do if my optical drive only has firmware for Windows 7 and I have 8.1? Also what even does firmware do?
The optical drive is Asus and on their website, The only driver is firmware for Windows 7 and I only have Windows 8.1. The is for a brand new computer I built but haven't turned on yet.

You don't need to do anything. The firmware is the internal software for the drive, and unless the drive is having problems burning--you don't need to upgrade the firmware. Your drive will work fine.
