Will AMD Athlon X4 740 bottleneck a R9 270X? And if so, how much of a performance drop would I see?

Lets do a count of what you say I should pay to have an upgrade-able system. 1. Intel Core i5-4440 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor: £130.74
2. MSI H97M-E35 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard: £55.16
for a total of £185.9 + Shipping. Now this would be good but considering to upgrade in the future, buying the cheapest mobo will not be a good investment. So lets instead go with this one: MSI Z97-GAMING 5 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard for £99.56 so now we have an upgradeable cpu, reliable mobo, and all for the low low price of £230.3. I could buy a FX6300 and a cheapish mobo and then another similar set of those in 2 years time. (assuming pounds don't loose much of their value and pc components cost about the same.) Am I wrong or is this investment actually loosing you money in the long run?
You could buy another set in 2 years time, but that's a new mobo and CPU, which will be more expensive, and the 6300 is already starting to show its age even now. If you got a Z97 and i5, you will be much better prepared, and if you want to upgrade in the future, you can always sell the i5 and get a much better CPU that fits with the mobo (IE it means you don't need a brand new one). So in the same amount of time, AMD would actually probably me MORE expensive, not less.

I have Crucial Ballistix Elite 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory right now, I got it for free and its pretty good
.I don't think saving up for a new rig is really much of an option. Maybe an upgrade to a AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor + Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Micro ATX AM3+? As far as I can tell uprading to an i5 would be atleast twice that much.
An FX 6300 would probably be reasonably better. It's single threaded performance boost over the 740 isn't huge, but it overclocks well, and its multithreaded performance is insanely higher. However, that MOBO can only support upto 1333mhz ram, so your 1866 would be scaled way down. The MSI 760GMA-P34(FX) seems like it would be better for your needs, and is only $5 more. You can get an FX 6300 and MSI 760GMA-P34(FX) for slightly under $160. How much money would this leave you with?
As stated before, The 740 will only limit me in cpu intensive games. Im sure I can still play games a good few games better on a 270X with only a 740? Anyways, Im probably going to buy the 270x anyways and then save up for a FX 6300 (or higher) and a nice small mobo that can support the rest of my parts? When I say other games, I mean games like Hawken and Minimum? This might also support Minecraft with decent shaders. Oh and I use http://uk.pcpartpicker.com to find the best parts for the best prices.
Pretty much everyone who has been on this site for more than 2 minutes uses PC Partpicker lol. And while the 740 won't hold you back in games that aren't that CPU intensive, nowadays, every game is pretty CPU intensive, and that CPU will hold you back quite a bit. Also, that isn't even AMD's latest line of CPUs, and their latest line of CPUs is already dead (IE any new CPUs they release won't work with any current MOBOs). That FM2 line is even older, and so is even more obsolete. Get the 270x if you want, but it will be held back greatly by the 740. Also, when you do upgrade your CPU and MOBO, I would get a Z97 board (H97 if you're not overclocking) because that board is compatible with Intel's current CPU line and their new line (when it comes out) so if you get an H97 and i5 4440, you can later upgrade to the new i5 or even i7 if you want.
Why are you so insistent on me switching to Intel? I don't need or even want the latest cpus. What exactly would be wrong with a FX 6300?
Also, the intel method means you can upgrade if you change your mind, the AMD method means you have to replace your MOBO to get a new CPU when the 6300 inevitably becomes how the 740 is now.

Nothing is wrong with the 6300, it is just a cpu on a dead socket, and it is beaten by the i5, so my advice will always be, if possible, go with what is better and can be upgraded rather than what is worse and can be replaced.
