Have a look at what inputs you have on the monitor, and what outputs you have on the graphics card.
You can connect DVI to DVI, DVI to HDMI, HDMI to DVI, HDMI to HDMI or DisplayPort to DisplayPort (mini or full size).
These are all digital connections that require no active adapter.
Note that if the monitor supports a refresh rate greater than 60 Hz, this will not be supported with HDMI on either end of the connection and it will revert to 60 Hz.
You can connect DVI-I to VGA or VGA to VGA, but these are analog and lower quality.

If your monitor has a digital input(hdmi dvi, dp) use that.
A VGA connection is analog and not as good.

If you do not have any cable, buy a hdmi to dvi or such to make the connection.
There are cable adapters available also.

You can use whatever both the monitor and GPU support. If HDMI is not an option, you can also use DisplayPort (DP), mini-DisplayPort (mDP), DVI or VGA.
