I've owned the Audioengine D1 and the Audioengine 5+ speakers for a while now (less than a year), and I've never had any real problems (aside from the one listed at the bottom of this post).
I have two computers, an iMac and a PC running Windows 8.1 64 Bit.
My usual audio setup is having the 5+ speakers running through the D1 on my Mac, but now I want to switch computers for a while and have them running on my PC.
When I plug in the D1, I get the error message "USB device not recognized". I've tried plugging the D1 into every USB port on my computer (USB 2 and USB 3). I've tried using different cables, I've tried blowing out the USB ports. The device does not come up as an output option in the "Sound" section in control panel. I do not believe I have a faulty product. The device was working up until the second I tried plugging it into the PC. I also plugged the D1 back into my Mac and it was working perfectly.
The D1 is a plug and play device so there are no drivers.

If it helps, I've only ever plugged this audio setup into my PC one time before. It worked fine, but after a few hours of playing music, Spotify told me there was a problem with my sound card and it couldn't play music. At the time I believed this to be because of the speakers overheating (which they were).

Extract it then go to the drivers tab for this device update it thru update driver. Point it to usb_audio.inf see if it installs somethingOk so in device manager I right-click on the unknown usb device and select update driver. I follow the prompts and choose the folder that I downloaded before. It tells me my device is up to date.
Also, if I try to get it to install the usb_audio.inf file I get an error message.

Go to the device after you plug it in. If it shows in device manager, go to details tab, change it to hardware ids. Copy and paste whats there in hereSo in Device Manager, under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, is a device called Unknown USB Device, that's the D1. I go to properties, details, change it to hardware ids, and this comes up:
USB\DEVICE_DESCRIPTOR_FAILURE
None of those things you listed came up.
