gtx 980 sli bottleneck or performance problems with i7 920
Hello,

Does anyone know if my msi big bang x-power with i7 920 have any issues with gtx 980 sli or if anyone is running a similar setup and has encountered problems? I've seen the term bottleneck coined on some websites and some say it does some say it doesn't. (plus i'm not too familar with the definition of the term)

My cpu is @ 4ghz if that helps and i'm running windows 7 sorry i'm abit vauge I'm not used to posting on forums. ha

What resolution he was hoping to play at was never really addressed, but if we're looking at multi-monitor set-ups as I'd expect from someone doing dual 980's, you wont get the same overall performance from a 920. Yes, real world performance is almost always different from benchmarks and opinions. My friend upgraded from a 920 a year ago, and I know from experience. Even if you overclock it, it would be about 20% behind a current gen i5 at stock speeds.

Don't get me wrong. The i7 920 is still a very capable processor, but it's dated. It will hold back most modern cards in SLI/Crossfire, especially at higher resolutions

Don't listen to people that don't actually have the hardware you are talking about.

I have SLi 980s pushing surround, mine is also OC'd @ 4ghz and i can run BF4 in Ultra surround 100+ fps.

Im using a GA-X58A-UD3R.

Sure u can squeeze some more fps out but is it really worth it just to play a game. Will the extra fps be worth the €£¥₩.

If you want to upgrade and future proof yourself, by all means. My 920 has served me well.

It would be crazy to spend so much on 2 gtx 980s and keep such an old cpu. Get 670 sli instead and a decent cpu

You're definitely not going to untilize two 980's in SLI with a first gen i7, if that's what you're asking.

I'd go with a relatively sound upgrade in terms of price/performance and go with a 4960K. Nothing bottlenecks that OC'd

i7 920??? With 2x 980 sli??? You have to be kidding me.Im not sure if this cpu can handle sli 660.. Bottleneck is when the cpu or gpu are holding back like i3 3th gen cpu will go on full usage with gtx 780 ti and the 780 ti will barely use 40% of its power And you my friend are suffering hard with this first gen i7 and those new 980s.You will need a new cpu and maybe ram. What is your ram?
