Hello, how are you?
I am looking to upgrade my PSU.
My current system is:
- i5 4670k
- MSI z97 Gaming 9
- GTX 780ti
- SSD
- 2 HHD
- DVD-RW
I am thinking about maybe going sli in the near future, either adding another 780ti or going 970 Sli.
I would like the PSu to be of great quality and performance and last me a couple of years and future system upgrades.
I was thinking about going for 1000W psu, either XFX 1050 or EVGA 1000 G2.
But then, alot of people told me that was overkill and that I should go for a great 850W unit instead.
Is that correct? Is 850W better for me?
Anyway... following that line of though, I am looking at 850W PSUs. But there are soooo many out there, that I am totally lost...
I have made kind of a shortlist. I will list it form most expensive to least expensive:
- Enermax Platimax EPM850AWT
- be quiet! DARK POWER PRO P10 850 Watt
- Seasonic P-Series P-860
- Corsair AX860i
- Corsair AX860
Can you please point me in the right direction?
Thank you!
Best regards!

You can check the power consumption at a PSU calculator. (Link: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.js...)
Try to get a power supply unit that:
- Has at LEAST 80+ Bronze certification, ideally a 80+ Silver/Gold will help you to save on your power bill.
- Can supply your system with enough power with 10-20% to spare, E.G. on if your system drains 500W on average, get a PSU that can supply about 550W (some calculators account for this, the one I linked does).
- Is at least semi modular, this allows for you to disconnect spare plugs from the PSU to increase airflow, fully modular just lets you remove the essentials plugs, which I find useless (UNLESS you want to put on custom cable covers)
- Has had good reviews from many sites, Corsair (VS, CX, CS are good entry-level PSUs), I also hear the Seasonic, Silverstone, Cougar and Antec PSUs are good but I've never used one myself so take it with a pinch of salt.
Remember, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

You want a good quality 850W supply for GTX 780 or GTX 780 Ti cards in SLI.
A 750W model would be more than enough for two GTX 970 cards.
By far the best value top tier supply is the Supernova G2 850.
Seasonic X 850 is also top quality, but much more expensive.
Seasonic M12II 850 and EVGA B2 850 are very good too.

Your system with 2 780ti's will draw ~620w at load, obviously a lot less if you had 2 970's and you could get away with a 750w PSU and still have a nice bit of headroom. Personally, I'd go for an 850w PSU and my choice would be an EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 or the 750 G2 if you did go for a 750w PSU, but there's not much difference in price (£10 here in the UK).
