So I just placed an order for http://www.amazon.com/BenQ-XL2420Z-24-Inch-LED-Lit-Prof... because I was able to get a brand new-in-box version for $250 giving me a 50% discount, which goes without saying, is an incredible deal. Now, I am upgrading from a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168..., which is God knows how old. The main reason I am upgrading my monitor is I was displeased with the colors on my old Acer. Now I know that a TN panel (the Benq) will not compare to an IPS. I have seen some reviews that it can actually come close to an IPS panel though. I don't have the slightest clue how to calibrate a monitor, but am certainly willing to learn. Is it hard? I don't want to buy one of those 100$ devices for a one-time use. Seeing as I am used to a 2ms response time do you think I would have an issue (being a detailed oriented person) going up to the 5ms that an IPS panel offers? Is it worth the color? I will use my PS4 for games like Destiny, NHL 15, CoD, BF Hardline, but my computer specifically for WoW. I understand I will not take advantage of the 144Hz refresh rate. The other monitor considered was http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-S24D590PL-23-6-Inch-LED-l.... Is it really that bad going with the Benq, or can I salvage it with some calibrating? P.S. I have a Retina Macbook Pro and understand that monitors in general will have trouble catching up to those colors (I have an anti-glare screen protector on it however). I noticed the monitor difference after I received this Macbook coming from a 2013 Razer Blade. I like the colors on an IPS panel, but if that Benq has potential and can come close, I would take the performance as I plan on getting a 27" 1440p monitor when something similar to the RoG Swift comes down in price.

Thank you for the literature on monitor calibration, I don't think that is something I want to deal with every month lol (as quick as it would probably be). I guess I was referring to the built in settings straight through the monitor.
As mentioned here, a recalibration just takes some minutes, as it will just compare with the latest calibration instead of doing a full calibration each time.
Each monitor has its lifecycle, so backlight and color filters will change. Therefore, for reliable colors, a recalibration each month is indispensable...

HiCalibrating your monitor is quite easy with a hardware calibration tool. Be aware that such a tool is never just for a one time use. You need to recalibrate your monitors each month or so...
If calibration is a new subject for you, I recommend you this eBook as a good crash course:

With mine, it just takes a minute or two.
The Acer 23.5" arrived, and will be installing/calibrating/comparing this evening.
When putting my new monitor next to my rMBP it gives me this weird feeling that I should return it for an IPS @ 5ms.

I'm in the same position.I had a matched pair of HP IPS panels. 1 died the other day. I have an Acer TN panel arriving today.
I also have a hueyPro calibration device. And yes, it needs to be redone on a regular basis. The hueyPro prompts once a month to recalibrate.
We shall see how close we can get these two panels. They will be side by side.
I'm very curious to see your results, I currently have my RMBP 15" next to my new monitor after fiddling with some settings someone recommended in a review. Big difference between the two depending on who you ask, but at the same time better whites and such than my old Acer that made them look yellowish.
