It switches automatically. If the application currently active requires the NVidia graphics, your laptop will switch, automatically, to the NVidia graphics. If the currently active application only requires the Intel graphics, then only the Intel graphics are used.

is there any way that i could manually select one of these graphic cards to optimize battery life or graphical performance by myself ?

Yep. it's called nVidia Control Panel and you have it.

1. Right Click on Desktop , select nvidia control panel
2. Select manage 3D settings / program settings tab
3. Under the dropdown (1) for programs select the program you want to assign to a specific GPU
4. Under the dropdown (2) for GPU, pick what ya want ...... auto , IG or discreet card

There may be third-party applications that allow this, but none that I know of.
