GTX 970 SLI vs R9 290 CROSSFIRE
What would be better ?
I have a triple screen set-up. I'd like to play Crysis 3 in Eyefinity / Surround configuration, but most importantly, which configuration from the two listed would be best for video rendering (After Effects and other software from Adobe) ?

manofchalk actually the R9 295x2 has a higher clock rate and performs better than 2x R9 290x's.

And there is a substantial difference in performance if you DO NOT overclock a R9 290 compared to the R9 290x.

But yeah, surprised about those numbers none the less. :)

the 970 sli used half the power and doesnt need watercooling though

The 7990 is equivalent to dual 280X's, and the 295x2 is equivalent to dual 290X's (and will be pretty similar to dual 290's). Thats how things break down running at triple 1080p.

As for After Affects and people complaining. Well, you can choose between CUDA which has spotty support, or OpenCL which has none.

CrossfireX technically refers to 4-way Crossfire, so pretty obvious which one is better there

Probably the 270 SLI is better for your usage. Performance probably isnt as good (particularly at that resolution, among equal performance 1080p cards, AMD have always won at higher res') but there is the Nvidia Cuda support in the Adobe Suite that simply isnt there for AMD's superior OpenCL performance.

Thank you for posting in this thread. So you believe the 970 SLI will outperform 2x290(or 290X) in Crossfire.
I know about CUDA and I render a ton of stuff in After Effects, BUT, I heard people complaining they couldn't get it to work with Maxwell and that Adobe may have said they weren't even going to make it work properly. That's why I am doubting between the two configurations.

yes, gtx 970 all the way.
it'll also have cooler temperatures, which is especially important for the card you put on top.

I thought about that, especially as I was looking for GPUs equipped with something blower-style if I were to choose nVidia. My main doubt is if they will work with After Effects, Photoshop and other software like these two programs. I know gaming performance they are alright if not even amazing.

Thank you for posting in this thread, Novuake. My question is: will I have hardware acceleration under After Effects, Photoshop...and other software like that? Gaming-wise I'm aware that SLI has been better than CFX, but I heard CFX was getting serious improvements. (frame pacing and all that)

The GTX970 x 2 will be considerably better.
Not to mention historically SLI has been more consistent than Crossfire.
