Laptop shuts off when charger is plugged in after installing new HDD
I have a Medion Akoya P6815. The hard drive recently died and was replaced with a WD 750 GB 2.5-inch SATA Internal Hard Drive - Black . Now whenever the FSP120-AAC charger is plugged in it shuts down within a few minutes. After this happens whenever I attempt to boot it will shut down instantly within 3 seconds of switching it back on. It will work again later if I leave it unplugged and wait about half an hour, and boot it using only the battery.

I have attempted to use my friends laptop charger, but the same problem occurs, so it's likely not the charger itself. I have considered that the new HDD may require more power, but that wouldn't explain why the battery still works. There have been a lot of lightning storms recently and it's possible a power surge could have occurred, but I don't know much about what would happen or what I should do in such a situation.

I'm at a loss of what to do. There have been occasions where I have booted it using the battery and plugged the charger in and it works fine until I next shut it down, but that doesn't happen often. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi there mnbvczal,

I doubt that the issue you are facing is caused by the new HDD. Just to be sure of that, I would advice you to test the hard drive with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool.
Most laptops have a safety feature of shutting down when there is something wrong with the power supply. The DC jack may be causing the problem for example. Might be a good idea to contact your laptop's manufacturer support.

Hope this will help,
