I'm looking to build a 1300$ gaming pc and I already have windows 7 and a monitor. I was thinking maybe a Nvidia Geforce 980 or 970 and maybe i7-4790k.

Actually, if you're only doing light overclocking you could have both 16gb ram and the SSD with a cheaper CPU cooler.

You will likely need more than 1300 dollars for that. I built a 770 one for 1600-1700. With a i5-4690. Unless you don't want an SSD, and have some lower grade hardware. I would also aim to pcpartpicker to pick your parts. It automatically checks which parts are compatible, and has a complete list of almost every part, and the places that sell them the cheapest.
