Faulty Gigabyte Windforce 3X R9 290?
Well i got myself a brand new Gigabyte Windforce r9 290 as i got it for quite a cheap price compared to other options. I then realized that idle temps were toasty at around 67 degrees Celsius!! And whenever i played a demanding game such as Crysis 3 or Star Citizen, the temps would shoot up to 94 degrees Celsius!! YIKES! And this is on a Windforce cooler, i knew r9 290s were hot but this is crazy for an aftermarket solution!

Is my card faulty? Should i return it?

Try something not that demanding and see if it reaches 94°C which is the thermal limit for the card.

I have made sure I have good airflow. I have 2 sp120s in the front, 2 in the top and 1 af140 as the exhaust. I also removed one of my enthoo pro's hard drive cage to ensure that at least one of my fans are not restricted.

Also, star citizen uses the same engine as crysis 3, the cryengine 3, but on a larger scale. So it may be more demanding than crysis 3 especially since it's still in early sages and it has not been optimised.

And I have set my fan curve at pretty much a 1:1 ratio because I don't really hear the noise through my headphones. But even with the fans spinning at 100%, at full load the temps still sky rocket to 94 degrees.

Set the fan curve to run higher it will drive down the temps

Check your airflow. Crysis is very demanding and I believe that temp but not sure about SC.
