R9 280X/R9 290/R9 290X/GTX 970 for 1080p
Hello.

I need a new GPU for my gaming rig. I play at 1080p on one 21" monitor, so I was wondering which one I should go for. I intend on using the GPU for at least 3 to 4 years from now. I will be purchasing locally, not online, so prices are much more inflated.

Sapphire AMD 280X R9 3 GB - $357
Sapphire AMD R9 290 4GB - $400
Sapphire AMD R9 290X 4GB - $483
MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4G - $477

Here are the rest of my specs:

i5 4690K stock speeds for now
ASRock Z97M PRO4
8GB DDR3 Kingston White Fury
Antec VP700P 700W

Considering the above mentioned prices, which one should I aim for? At my resolution, I need some justification for the more expensive choices. Is the 290 worth the extra $43 over the 280X? And are both the 290X and GTX 970 worth the extra ~$80 over the plain 290?

Nope, at that price it is ludicrous. You can try pre-ordering it for the normal price of approximately $350.

R9-290 is the best bang for the buck if you want an immediate purchase. R9-290X is also a good choice.

If possibly go GTX 970 else R9 290.
For 3-4 year, you want R9 290 if you want ultra settings and near 60fps in future games at 1080p.
Depending on your views of having a lower power consumption, then the GTX 970 is worth it.
