Best Graphics set up for 1440p?
Hey everyone,

I was wondering, assuming a large budget what is the best set up with graphics cards for 1440p, not just for today, but for a while into the future. Essentially i don't want to have to think about upgrading my system for 2 years at least while still playing everything on ultra.

Ive been comparing benchmarks, and a GTX 970 SLI appears to have an average of 72 fps in crysis 3 at 1440p, versus only 48 fps of a single GTX 980. In every benchmark i've checked the double GTX 970 is at least 30 fps superior to the single GTX 980 at 1440p. This card combo in my country costs about 1000 dollars, versus 800 dollars on a GTX 980.

What are the drawbacks of pursuing this SLI combination? I've never had SLI on my computer before. What happens in the event that i wish to play a non SLI compatible game for example? Are there workarounds to that sort of situation?

Is there any graphics cards coming out in the next two to three months (wouldn't be willing to wait longer than that, my 6 year old computer is a hassle in every imaginable way) that would be a viable single GPU option that would beat that?

Also in terms of CPU, would this need a 5930 instead of a 5820, due to the PCI lanes? (I dont understand it very well, but a lot of the reviews mentions the 5820k lacks the same amount of PCI lanes which limits SLI)

thanks for all the answers, i haven't been paying attention to PC parts in general and the last time i got a computer (back when i was a student) was years ago and it was only mid-range at the time, at the moment i'm looking for something thats high end in as many departments as possible.

ah...forgot about that...
i5 4690k is already enough for gaming
if you do not plan to OC, E3-1231V3 is worth to consider.

If it's mainly for gaming, Intel Core i5 4690K is actually a better idea.

1. GTX970 is the best bang for buck this time

2. SLI scaling on GTX970 is good. The drawbacks of SLI? potential synch problems (not always, nothing you can do beside waiting for games/driver update), 2xGPU != 2xperformance, 2xGPU == 2xpower consumption, 2xGPU==2xGPU price.

3. New GPU in the next 3-6 months? something from AMD, perhaps. I dunno for sure.

4. 5820k? 5930k? I would prefer 4790k due to motherboard and RAM prices. The difference in performance does not worth the price of getting 2011+DDR4 platform. Not much of a big difference in games too.
But, it is your choice, if you want DDR4 that bad and if you can afford it, why not.

Every one would tell you the same thing man. GTX 970 is a very good graphics processor for it's price.

The GTX 970 is a good deal right now.
