Hi, I am building my first gaming rig.I have gone for Asus Sabertooth 990fx R2.0 with the AMD fx 8350 black edition. I have a Gigabyte hd 7970, 16gb hyperx fury ddr3 1866Mhz ram, all being porewed by a Cronus modular 850w PSU. I am still waiting to get my hard drives and optical drive.
I have installed mobo, CPU and fan, ram, GPU and PSU. I have wired PSU to mobo with 24 pin connector at EATXPWR slot and 8 pin connector.
Now I am getting confused. GPU has both a 6 pin slot and a 8 pin slot do I need to connect both? and if so can I use the one wire with two sets of connectors on it??
I also an confused on how to power the case fans and outside controlls, e.g. power/reset buttons.
I know this is noobtastic but you have to start learning somewhere. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

One thing that I would suggest is to remove the GPU and install Windows using the on board graphics. Once everything is up and running properly, then power it down and install the GPU.
Also take care to make sure none of those wires are going to run in to your CPU/GPU cooling fans. Best case is some horrible sounds coming from the computer, worse case is ruined fans, overheating chips and crashes.
Good luck with the new build!

But quickly answering the specifics, yes both gpu power plugs need to be plugged in, the 8 pin with an 8 pin and the six pin with a six pin (the 8 pin may be a connector with a 6+2 pin that joins to make 8). The power and reset buttons plug in at the bottom of the board, check the mobo manual for the specific direction they go (plugs have no specific direction but leds do, dont worry putting them in the wrong way wont damage anything) and case fans plug into headers on your motherboard.

You need to connect both sockets on the GPU. Doesn't matter where from.
The case controls should go onto the front panel header on the motherboard, usually at the bottom-right.
Case fans either connect to the motherboard or to a four-pin connector on the PSU, depending on what plug they're fitted with.
