4790k @ 4.9GHz @ 1.4v - is it any good ???
i just purchased this cpu can you guys tell me if i got an average or below average cpu based on my results?
also keep in mind this is only boot into windows test, no stress test as i dont have cooling for it right now im only running a puny cm hyper103 that was bundled with the cpu.

everyting with turbo off, power save off, c state off:
1.25v 4.6
1.30v 4.7
1.35v 4.8
1.40v 4.9
1.48v - no it aint happening

also at stock 4.0 turbo off it was running at 1.08v default and in prime95 i was approaching 85C and power consumtion was 160watts.

so what do you guys think ?

Pretty sure 4.9Ghz won't be stable, even with af cooling, as the VCore is too high. 85C on stock speeds isn't great, and that is why, even with powerful coolers, you may have Voltage (stability) issues. But it may also be the result of poor application of thermal compound, so make sure you go through some application method tutorials (like pea size method) before applying compound for af heatsink.

yes it does 4.9 but for how long ? i dont like 1.4 at all plus i doubt its gonna be stabe.
realistically at a more reasonable 1.3 i can expect 4.6 stable tops which isnt that great.
and also as mentioned at stock it runs 10C higher that it should under load.

yes i know i need better heatsink its on its way.

You'd need a good cooler, average chip, the temp on stock speeds tell it all. 85C is not great on stock speeds w/o turbo on stock heatsink. 75C is more like what people get. I'd say 1.3V 4.7Ghz would be hot, so make sure you grab a powerful heatsink.

yowza, thats a lot of voltage, but from what ive understood 4.7ghz or better is a good chip....and yours does 4.9 with a cheezy hsf. i would be satisfied with that cpu.
although, personally, i wouldnt take it over 1.35v. overclockers say 1.4 is reasonably safe but the extra hundred mhz just isnt worth the additional heat and potential lifespan reduction (may not be stable as well).

i say find the minimum stable voltage for 4.6/4.7ghz and leave it there. get a decent water cooler or big air cooler, youll need it.
