Remove and replace heatsink - extra thermal paste needed?
I need to remove an amd fx6300 from a faulty motherboard and replace it in a working one.

Do I need to reapply thermal paste when reseating the heatsink? Or can I just put the heatsink straight back on? I wasn't sure if the connection between the chip and heatsink would be okay if I removed and replaced it.

If I need more thermal paste, how much should I apply and using what method?

This is using the fx6300 straight out of the box using the stock cooler.

All advice much appreciated.

Yes you should, isopropyl alcohol 70%-90% will do fine, you can use toilet paper, cotton ball, Q-tips to clean the old paste off.

Yes you need new thermal paste. People say anywhere from a grain of rice to a pea size amount of thermal paste.

Yes always use new thermal paste, you will find that it has become dried out and probably will flake off some. Just use a rice sized amount in the center the pressure from the heat sink will spread it out.

yes get fresh paste and reapply that's a no brainer
