LGA 1150 VS LGA 2011 Question
My son is building his first Gaming computer.

He bought an ASUS P9X79 WS which is a LGA 2011 but, his I7 Processor is a 4770K LGA1150

He has a GTX 780 ACX he's gonna run.

Should we sell/replace the Processor or the Board?

Thank you for your help & expertise.

within 30 days - refund/exchange the mobo. the cheapest lga2011 cpu is over $300 USD on newegg, and the cheapest i would recommend is a six-core for just under 600...and even then lga2011 is a dead socket, lga2011-v3 would be the way to go on that front.

so yeah, get yourself a nice z97 mobo. a 4770k will be a top performer in most anything for years to come. whether or not youd like the option of 8x/8x sli in the future is up to you, you can find such in a z97 mobo if you pay attention and look

I would return both, and swap for the i7-4790k and a Z97 motherboard. Even dual cards is fine with this setup.

If you went with LGA2011, then you would be looking at i7-4920k / i7-4930k. LGA2011-3 (and you would then need a i7-5930k to take advantage, an i7-5820k doesn't have all the lanes). Those configs would be for serious GPU setups or workstation class computing.

If its within 30 days I would just return and exchange it.

X99 / X79 = Workstation class board, can't suggest for gaming unless using more than 2 GFX cards

X97 is current 1150 socket .... matching CPU is 4790k although the 4690k will serve just as well for gaming if overclocking. At stock, the 4690k is 3.5 / 3.9 Ghz versus the 4970k's 4.0 / 4.4 GHz

Z87 is the matching MoBo chipset design for 4770k.... tho it will work in a Z97 board.

if it under 30 days he can rma the mb back for just the shipping costs. the 2011 and 2011-e mb with the right cpu have more pci lanes then the 1150 mb. if he going to uses more then one video card the 2011 mb is better. the 1150 mb if it the newer z97 chipset has newer features then the older 2011 mb. (m3 sata for faster sata speeds and more built in usb 3.0 ports). the older 2011 mb is two years old.
