Hmm ... I'd have to say avoid Micron too. At least if you're a branch of government and looking for a few systems for your office. When I was in the military, we went with Micron because they promised us such a great deal.

It turned out all of the motherboards were ancient pieces of crap and most were also flawed to the point where even if you put 128MB of memory into them in the form of four 32MB SIMMs (it was a few years ago) it would still only detect 96MB of RAM on the majority of them. And no, it wasn't the RAM. We tried switching exchanging the mempry sticks with each other and the same computers always reported the same memory defects, no matter what memory sticks were in them.

Upgrading the BIOS didn't help, and Micron refused to admit they were defective.

Maybe Micron has improved since then, but I'm still holding a grudge against them as an OEM anyway because there are plenty more fish in the sea, and I don't usually go with an OEM system anyway. Heh heh.

Okay. If I were totally new to computers and was looking to buy one, then I'd theoretically know nothing about which OEMs to avoid, or well, heck, much of anything. And hence I'd probably go with Apple and get a Mac.

[shudder]

Thank the powers that be that I'm not that ignorant though. With the experience I've had with PCs, if I had to go with an OEM system, I'd probably go with a Dell. They may use funky proprietary power supplies, or some such nonsense, but I haven't really heard a bad thing about them other than that, and I haven't seen them put a totally misinformative commercial on TV yet like Gateway does when it tries to convince the world that the Celeron is a powerful processor.

So yeah, I'd probably go Dell, if I HAD to go OEM.

Otherwise, I'd build a Silver Phoenix Super Astonishing Ultra Infini-Power Monster PC 2001 Tower, Professional Edition.

And then I'd have to fire myself from marketting my own products because my system names are too long and thus don't fit on the invoices.

But hey, my chromed full-tower case would look pretty wiz and the system would rock, so at least I could give myself a raise in my engineering department :)

Awesome machines, beautifully build and the best PC support program on the planet.

hey man i hate to burst your bubble but I'm the head technician of a local computer renaissance and i have to say that compaq's (with the exception of a select few high end systems) are [-peep-]. even their Duron models are really jsut bad. They have skimped so many corners that you as a Compaq user could never understand or realize. Cooling is very important in todays computers which is why we use only AMD recommended cooling fans. The CoolerMaster DP 6H511 is the way to go for Durons and ThermalTake's Volcano II is killer for Athlon's because of it's exceptional cooling with minimal noise. For myself 7K RPM FOP-38 but that's overkill. Power supplies are another big deal for me. You should at least have the option to get a nice Sparkle or Enlight 300 Watt which you don't and furthermore, who in the hell designed their BIOS? It's crap. I'm sorry you have been misinformed but Micron is hands down the best large scale OEM out there right now. Have you looked in their cases lately? 300 Watt power supllies in most of their systems and IDE RAID with Deskstars standard in their high end stuff. Huge HS Fan setups and a super nice BIOS with many more tweakable options than the Compaqs. Hell alot of the Micron's i've seen even leave in the overclocking options so you can render your nice PC unbootable. I love messing with the PC guys at Best Buy
:-) !! Dell is great for Business class stuff but I think their home units are misguided at best and Gateway is going under. It's just a matter of time. They build [-peep-] computers and sell cheap cheap crap. Now i will say this Compaq is probably better than HP. I know that's not saying alot but hey, I've seen the new HP's and they are iffy at best. Don't get me wrong the Vectra is still probably the nicest space saving desktop built but that's it. Their home systems are junk. I've never seen a worse case design with more proprietary crap. Compaw is definately getting better and if they keep sticking with the market i may yet praise them because i don't hate them as i do HP. My opinion is if you are dead set on getting a pre built machine go with a local computer shop. One that's been around a while and has an expensive location like next to a mall or such and if that's not plausible got with Micron for your low end stuff to mid end stuff and Falcon Northwest is the only option for High End rigs.
