Thanks.
I was planning on just holding out with the 7600GT but I can probably get at least $100.00 for it on eBay. It's been a great card and I highly recommend it to anyone. FarCry with HDR was astonishing and it handled F.E.A.R and the Prey Demo quite well but I want to try Oblivion and the 7600GT doesn't fair too well there. The X1800XT was the best card I could afford that would allow it. Besides, since my last two cards have been nVidia's, I figured it was time to give ATI a spin again.
| Quote : FYI--Cleeve, I realize that there is no sub-$50 category for video card category, and you have good reasons not to have one. However, I was just goofin around, looking at really cheap video cards, and look at how cheap this guy is! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Cust [...] 6814102455

8O. 128-bit GDDR3 memory on a $48 card! And it even has heatsinks on the memory (this is a big deal to me because my crappo X600 has no VRAM heatsinks)!
Well guys--I just bought one. Question for Cleeve (or whomever wishes to answer): Should I just use it in my parent's PC, or do you think there's a chance it will best the suckey Inno3d card in my sig? Can't find a benchmark comparing the plain 6600 to the x700 pro at the moment...
well, if you look at the vga charts here on Tom's the vanilla 6600 loses more than it wins. When it wins, it is by a small margin. (ie. quake4) but when it loses it loses big. (serious sam 2) The x700 they have there is a 256 meg version but the core/mem speeds look close enough to get an idea.
of course, if yours is a 6600gt then keep it... if it is not, then you may see better performance on the 700. JMO of course, others may dissagree.

I'd try it in your rig first; it's faster than your 6600, and it should overclock well with that GDDR3 memory.
And for $51 more than that X700Pro:

I actually just ordered a brand new 7600GT today. I'm jumping from an ATI 9550, so the improvement should be amazing. It's good to see comments like this about a card you bought!
9550???? That's an AGP card. I hope you've bought a PCI-E motherboard to go along with that 7600GT.
You won't be disappointed. It's an excellent card for the money these days.
No worries, my last upgrade included changing MBs to the ASRock 939Dual SATA. It has both an AGP and PCI-Express, and it doesn't lost speed on either one. However, I'll probably just see about disabling the AGP slot completely once the new card is confirmed as running well. I've been researching a new card for a while now (month or two) and everywhere says that the 7600GT gives a lot for the money.
Yup, the ASROCK model board you have shouldn't disappoint...it's relatively cheap price is definately not because it has cheap components. I do advise getting a chipset fan if you plan to overclock though...
The only thing I would change in this list right now is utterly remove the 400-500$ segment in PCI-Express. There is no point recommending the 7900GTX and X1900XTX when a X1900XT at 100$ less will do just as well, if not better (than the 7900GTX). Of course, these cards are the best in their price range; but that price range is not recommendable, as the 200+$ price range is not recommendable in AGP.
Oh, I am getting the 7600 GT for sub-$150. I paid $161, but I've got a $30 rebate to send in. I know this isn't enough to move the card just yet, but I suspect that time is will be soon.
Actually, according to HKEPC the 7600GT is going to move into the $130 Retail category. I think it will pretty much pwn anything in that price range when it does.
Cleeve - amazing post - well done
Maybe add this link into it at the bottom so noobs like me can find good comparisons:

It's the THW interactive bit. I love it. It's better than sex.
u have no x1900gt or 7950gx2.. itd be nice to see em up
the 7950 gx2 is in the not reccomended zone lol. as for teh x1900gt...its pathetic

Prozac just died
Hello!
Can someone tell me the difference between these three and which one is the one recommended one here?
BFG GeForce 7600 GS 420MHZ AGP8X 512MB DDR2 VGA DVI-I HDTV Out Video Card
EVGA E-GEFORCE 7600 GS 400MHZ AGP8X 256MB 256BIT 800MHZ DDR2 VGA DVI-I HDTV Out Video Card
XFX GeForce 7600 GS 400MHZ AGP8X 512MB 256BIT 533MHZ DDR2 VGA DVI-I HDTV Out Video Card
Thanks, I'm easily confused
They seem to be the same card, the BFG is clocked higher then the others, that's all.
The BFG is overclocked right out of the box - I have it sitting in my living room in fact, waiting to be installed. It will, sadly, be a couple of weeks before I can comment on how it performs.

Yes, with your ma.
Stupid comment
Got my PNY 7600GT. Very happy thus far. My 3DMark05 score went from 1700 to around 5800. Not too shabby! My best comparison was with DDO. I used to run at Medium settings getting 25-30 FPS in most areas. Now, I break 100 FPS in the same areas. Just thought I'd share my happiness. Only complaints relate to cooling, but that is expected. The fan is a bit loud when it gets going in-game, but tolerable and replaceable. And, the card runs hotter than I'm used to.
well i personly really like the thread and i think it will help a lot of people who are lost and cant find what they want.

In theory, it should; however, n00bs are too n00bish to search; they just start a new thread.

Yeah, the fan does get a bit noisy when in 3D mode, but hot??? IIRC, mine never broke 60C. My 6600GT idled as 60C and so does my X1800XT.

Raath, Is that an AGP 7600GT? I havent seen them available in the U.S.
No, PCI-Express x16. I didn't even realize 7600GTs came in AGP.
Quote : No, PCI-Express x16. I didn't even realize 7600GTs came in AGP.
That would be because they don't--at least not officially.
I have this suspicion that we'll see several more AGP cards for the next couple of years - it's just too big a market to turn down for ATI/Nvidia.
But then, I was sure the moon was made of cheese for a number of years.
:?

Well they do exist. At least Leadtek is advertising them, which is official enough for me. Check this link, second from the bottom.

You can pre-order them here in the UK - wish I'd waited I got the 7600 GS for myself - oh well you can't help that
man that guy made a nice work out of the lengthy reviews of soo many cards available. Funny thing is that I was about to post asking which card I should buy; because I still have AGP and am looking to upgrade my card for the ATI AIW 9600 Pro that i currently have and am unable to run the games
.
So which one of the 7600GS cards are worth purchasing. I know the circuit city only sells the eVGA e_GeForce. I have a 100$ card from CC; so figured paying 60$ more and getting that card might be worth it. But, what do you guys think might be better? is that my only choice for AGP; because GigaByte and BFG and ASUS seems to be making the cards for PCI-E and not AGP
.
Shouldn't the x1900 gt be on the list in the $200 region? Its a far better card than the 7600gt, you can get it for just under $200 on Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102022
Just thought I would mention that, in case anyone cares...
Lots of stuff has changed recently, some wide-sweeping changes to the list on the way.
Ah ok i'll stop losing sleep over it then
Actually, the list is still pretty good. The X1800 XT is better than the X1900 GT, and is about the same price. The X1800 GTO has to be removed though... to expensive now compared to the X1800 XT.
I might have to modify it when the new Ati cards become available... X1950XTX, X1300 XT, X1650 PRO...
New list is posted, anyway
*** AUGUST 28 CHANGES ***
- X1800 GTO removed (price increased too high)
- Minor price tweaks
- X800 GTO added to sub-$150 AGP picks
- 7900 GTX removed (too expensive compared to X1900 XTX)
BFG Tech 7600GT: $140
Here's another great deal: Sapphire X850XT: $100 It's open box, though.

pretty sure that it was mentioned many times here that the list was only for NIB retail stuff. Open box, used and refurb just makes it too hard to stay on top of. (as if the changes in the new stuff was not already hard enough. lol)

You're right sojorner, but on the other hand if people want to post current deals in this thread, more power to 'em. If anyone has the time to share a deal, that's not a bad thing... as long as they don't expect me to change the list.

cool man, that was what I was getting at. It's all good.
This is a wonderful topic. Thanks so much Cleeve. That X850 for 120 bucks sure looks tasty!!
I've done a quick analysis based on the new charts. It can be found here.
Note that this analysis excludes a number of cards that were too weak to appear in the charts. It also excludes SLI/Crossfire combos - because honestly, I don't see the value in them (2x the price never equals 2x the performance). Finally, it looks at 10 tests (2 toughest settings of each test).
Price is based on Newegg, Pricewatch prices.
Numbers come from TH benchmark charts.
I converted 3DMark scores into FPS by dividing by 30 & rounding; doing this gives a deeper average FPS.
Results for the lazy:
800 GTO is tops when sorted on $ per Frame ($4.84)
However the Radeon X1800 XT R520 does double duty by having a low $ per Frame ($5.02) and a high average frame score across all tests (36.9).
so I read on there that you can get a 1900xtx for 277, while the cheapest 1900xt is 315... hmm... so I look it up on pricewatchand the xt is right, but the xtx shows 349 as the cheapest. on newegg the cheapest is 354, 324 after rebate. :?
This was just one look at one number. 8O If that is wrong, the rest is suspect. Peddle your cooked numbers somwhere else.
Return of the $95 X850XT. Yet another great deal.
Quote : This was just one look at one number. 8O If that is wrong, the rest is suspect. Peddle your cooked numbers somwhere else.
Off our meds today, are we?
Fixed the price to 325. Sheesh...
Quote : Return of the $95 X850XT. Yet another great deal.
At $100 w/shipping this wins the Dollars per Frame race ($4.20) with an average score of 23.8 across all tests.
Going over the prices again...
Look what just showed up on newegg: Leadtek WinFast PX7300GT
1.4GHz GDDR3 on a card that costs $84. This should take the place of the X800GTO in the sub-$100 section.
I don't see the 7300GT on the charts. Where are the benchmarks?
Quote : 1.4GHz GDDR3 on a card that costs $84. This should take the place of the X800GTO in the sub-$100 section.
I have avoided doing tha6t because the official 7300 GT specs are much slower than some manufacturers have made, so while certain 7300 GTs are great, many of them are real slow...
dude, he said 50% as speculation, and basicaly guaranteed means that it is like almost guaranteed, in other words the manufacturer did not actually guarantee it to be flashable, what he meant was that the success rates of such modifications is so high that it is practically guaranteed.
