Perhaps the US only issue is not THG's but laws imposed by the governments of both the US and your own country's. Sorta like killing the messenger isn't it? Used to be 128bit encryption was restricted to US only, did that upset you guys that much? Falcon Northwest is a US based overpriced supposed high end builder so for all you Canadians for example do you know the hassle it is to send something into your country even with free trade, forms, fees, more forms, more expense and I don't think it's because THG made it that way. I believe that it's sender's responsibility to cover costs and recover them after the fact if required. Has THG given away things previously to readers in countries outside the US? I'm sure that if they were allowed either legally or finacially that THG wouldn't intentionally exclude anyone.
Yes I do live in the US but I could put together a much better system for half what they gave to FNS. It just sorta seems like it's a bunch of parts they had layin around to put with a core2duo extreme. Nforce 5 series boards are just around the bend, Corsair has 1066 cas 4 mem now, Plextor drives are usually the best but go find compatible media, logitech 5400's have been consistantly reviewed as a lesser model when compared to the z5500's let alone Klipsch. This is a high end gaming system with onboard audio? My goodness they didn't even have a Sound Blaster audigy SE? Never ever heard of Sanyo associated with anything computer related except noisey fans, move alot of air but noisey, thus the reason for the PAX insulation. Even if it were just sales tax you'd have to pay which I seriously doubt, it's too much to pay for the cpu, the 7950's and maybe the 500gb drive to use in a different system and sell the rest if you could in a reasonable amount of time.

OK...I still want it. Don't tell me you'd turn it down if you won? Presuming you entered. Sure, it might not be the best rig, but I'd take it over my P4 anyday.

And anyways, it is supposed to be excessive! Don't you think more people would want to enter to win a 10k rig over a 3k rig?

One thing alot of people here are missing is this isn't an issue of one of you buying this thing from THG. This is them giving away a $10,000 asset. There are alot of legal impliciations with handing that away due to its worth (for one, the IRS is going to tax the hell out of whoever wins it). Also, since you'd be entering into a legal contract with THG if you win this (hence you have to be eighteen), there are even more legal implications put on top of that. Add to that trade issues (again, its a chunk of change more then just a video card or some RAM, which could slip through the cracks) that both your government and the US will impose on the sale and purchase of technology. Alot of technology used here in the US in computers cant be exported easily (like, as mentioned before, 128bit encryption). I assume the thing comes with the US version of windows XP so thats actually a great example.

Just cause some of you might have it easier then others to get included in this (ie, the americas vs europe or asia), doesn't mean that it would be better to say "ok, we'll let it into these 12 countries but no one else". Someone mentioned do canada but dont include quebec (for whatever local issues are in that country) but that'll just rile up the french canadians (oh my...). it would be a huge legal headache to do more then just the US for what really amounts as a quick publicity stunt. anyone who is going to stop coming to this website over this is unhinged. If it were a german only contest, i would just skip over it like i've done in the past (more then a few times).

All of this just for a one in millions chance to win a peice of equipment that will cost you a few grand just to keep your hands on it. Not that i didn't sign up....

Silverstone Icon Aluminum Chassis - $273
Silverstone 600 Watt Modular Power Supply - $160
MACH V EXOTIX Paint
Microsoft Windows XP PRO - $150 (OEM)
SANYO-DENKE H2O CPU Cooling System - couldn't find a price, guesstimating $250
ASUS P5N32 SLI Deluxe motherboard - $280
INTEL CORE 2 Extreme X6800 2.93 GHZ, 4MB - $1150
Corsair TWIN2X-2048-6400C4 W/EPP - $180 x 2 = $360
2x NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GX2 1024MB - $570 x 2 = $1140
2x Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10,000 RPM SATA = $250 x 2 = $500
RAID 0
Seagate SATA 500GB HARD DRIVE 7200RPM - $280
Mitsumi Card Reader / 1.4 FD - Black - $20
Sony 16X DVD-ROM - Black - $20
Plextor 760A 18X DVD+-RW DL - Black - $100
Onboard Audio - $0 (totally bogus for this caliber system, IMHO)
Logitech G5 2000DPI Wired Mouse - $52
Microsoft Wired Keyboard - Black - $20
Matching keyboard and mouse - WTF?
Apple Cinema HD 30" 2560x1600 Display - $2000
Logitech Z-5450 DIGITAL 5.1 SPKRS - $300
Custom System Recovery DVD - free
PAX MATE 16"X18" PRE-CUT Sound Dampener - $22
PAX MATE 6"X14" PRE-CUT Sound Dampener - $22
Warranty - 3 Year Parts/Service including 1 year of Falcon Overnight

By my calculations, that comes to about $7099. That doesn't even take into account that Falcon most definitely does not pay full price for each of these components. So this means someone is paying about a $3000 premium for warranty, paint job and bragging rights.

Someone mentioned do canada but dont include quebec (for whatever local issues are in that country) but that'll just rile up the french canadians (oh my...).

The reason behind this, is that Quebec is very protective of itself. Example:

If you are an Ontario citizen and own a cottage in Quebec, and you need to place an insurance claim for your cottage. The insurance company, which operates out of Ontario, cannot waltz in to Quebec and effect normal claim procedures. They need to send a licensed Quebec authorized person.

Therefore, the rest of Canada excludes Quebec in contents because the province has elected to be seperated from Canada in so many ways that it is very very difficult for the rest of the country to deal with them.

Now this is not just another example of the Canada/US relations, US being like Quebec. The USA still deals with other countries and allows trade into itself, whilst Quebec shuns on outside help. Just to clear it up :)

Lets get hypothetical:

Would you pay me 50 000$ for a brand new Dodge Viper RT10 with the newest technology available
OR
Would you take a free, last year Dodge Viper that performs just a little worst

It's not a question of receiving a rig with a motherboard old by a generation or two, nor is it that its not the #1 RAM on the market. This is a FREE computer that can OUTPERFORM 98% of the rigs owned by people on these forums. WHO CARES if it dosent have a sound card, stick the one from your old box in! IT STILL FREE! You people get so freaking greedy!

It doesn't say assembly and installation required. The people that put this together don't work for free.

Very true, but if someone is getting paid $3000 to assemble a single PC, show me where to apply :D On the serious side, I'm not trying to say that this isn't a sweet PC, or that it is a huge stretch to call it a $10,000 PC. I'm just saying that you could build your own for a fair deal cheaper if you wanted to.

Nah here's a better idea ya' FAQin n00b, how about you find somewhere else to be/rant, because it's obvious that you're only here for one thing, and far from a 'loyal reader'. People who've been loyal readers but just don't happen to have a US mail box have every right to be pi$$ed if they so feel.

Personally I don't care about the rig (sure give me one, whatever, I'd sell it immediately for a Laptop, a Plasma and a Case or two of Beer! http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/3559/drunkfriendsrd8.gif) but it's the idea behind the US only as an appreciation of what's supposed to be a global site. I'm sure FNW gave them the rig for the publicity it garners, and considering their buying public they don't care if the Euros or Asians are ticked because they don't buy many Falcons. But it's far from being appreciative of 'our readers' to not have things available in other countries. If THG payed a penny for this then it was too much, and considering the reach it just seems myopic to have not tried to get more participant for the various corners of the globe.

Really it's just ridiculous to in anyway tell people who are loyal readers to go rant elsewhere why should they, THEY are the loyal readers, that's why they feel slighted, johnhy come lately readers like yourself wouldn't care.

As for the issues of shipping I doubt that's it alone, but more of an issue of finding a single sponsor, and there's no way Falcon Northwest is going to sponsor a giveaway when the Canadians end up with a better Voodoo PC in this contest.

The thing I find funniest is that Tom himself couldn't enter this contest. http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/5563/rollinglaughmv2.gif

It's a great PC, but I don't expect to win. I always enter ATI's contests and win bupkis.

In fact, the last time I won anything I really looked forward to was in elementary school. I won a "Frank N' Stein" meal at a neighborhood bar. This was a family style pub back in the Sixties. The Frank N' Stein was a foot long hot dog and a stein of rootbeer.

If I win this, the only thing I'll regret is that it's not an X1900XT Crossfire system. I really do prefer ATI to Nvidia.

Good luck to everyone who enters.

Reply to yipsl

Yea not only is it nvidia but Tom's just had a sub par review on these two cards.
Oh well i'll just sell those quad sli cards and put in dual 7900GTXs.

It is sad non-US citizens were left out. THG has an international reader base, and it has been like that since its beginning. The sweepstake was made to show appreciation for the readers. Well the “readers” are from all parts of the globe. Not to mention that, as I understand, the sweepstake was announced at the UK site… Frankly, what’s the deal with US citizens only?

Any logistical or financial problems on the eligibility of non-US citizens are probably due to the fact the prize is an already build up rig (and so: shipping, taxation, etc.)

Just to clarify, THG is giving away a US$ 10.000 WORTH rig in partnership with Falcon NW. So THG is probably coughing up less than that, since Falcon NW is providing the components at cost price in exchange of advertising their brand.

Still, all this could be solved if the prize was up to US$ 10.000 (or less without Falcon NW participation) worth of components anywhere on the globe. This could easily be done by crediting the prize on an international credit card, upon proof of purchase of a rig, dated after the announcement of the sweepstake winner.

A credit card company could easily put it together (logistically). Any taxation outside US territory as well as administrative costs of the credit card company would be debited from the main prize… THG would have to give nothing more than US$ 10.000.

I don’t know about all of you, but I would gladly give up: Quad-SLI (in favor of a single GF7950), 7.1 speaker system, keep my CRT monitor, or even slightly down grade the motherboard and processor… Only to be eligible and get a free new kick*** rig.

IN FACT, IF I WON (if I was eligible) I WOULD BE BANGING MY HEAD UP AGAINST THE WALL IN HAPPINES even if the prize was down to about US$ 5.000 (after taxation, no Falcon NW participation and etc.). Hell, I wouldn’t even mind putting some of my own on top of that.

Your analogy isint exactly accurate, it should be something like the following..

<Edited for length>

How do you feel, being picked out because the man didnt feel it was worth trying to walk accross the street with his chequebook?

Now that is an analogy.

Actually, ArbY's original analogy was better because it preserved the fact that in any case you are getting a free service, which inherently removes any justification of your complaints towards the services received by others. If you were a paying customer and they shortchanged you, then you'd have every reason to complain, but that is not the case.

I'm am not implying that you have no right to complain...quite the contrary. Vocalization of your opinion is certainly an integral part of the forums. I'm just stating that if you stop and think about exactly what you are upset over, the petty and illogical foundation of your argument will become overwhelmingly clear to you. So by all means, let us know your thoughts about the THG 10K PC. In the meantime, I will be more than happy to call the waaaaaaaaambulance for you.

Also, nothing personal against you, oneil. I just picked your post for my response because it caught my eye and I couldn't possibly comment on every whiney response individually. This was my general response to everyone, and I merely used you as a starting point. Thank you and good day 8)

I think Toms could have avoided this fun little thread by simply explaining the drawing could only be held for US residents for reason X and X - and appologize to those in other countries. I'm quite sure whatever the reason is, it is a good one.

In defense of THG,

Tom's Hardware has been providing free content for nearly 10 years now. We, the community of members who make up their user-base, have been enjoying free content with detailed information, specifications, advice, including financial and technical, a free solution where we can discuss these options and points ... we've paid nothing for these services.

Now, ArbY and sympathizers…

THG doesn’t give anything to us readers for free. Wake up! We are critical mass they use to sell space in their website for advertisement. As of that and your story: I am still waiting for my 100 bucks!!! (BTW, if according to your logic the bills are due to every single day I visited the site, SO that would be: 6 plus years visiting the site nearly every work day… it would com down to about 150.000 bucks 8O … ArbY… WHERE IS MY MONEY?! )

Now you're splitting hairs between right and 'reason' to complain?

They have both. Considering this is something that is brought about by the success of the site which was built by the page views and contributions of people who've frequented the forums for some time, regardless of their point of origin (or did they always consider the US vs non-US pageviews while sending figures to marketers?) there's reason too.

The omission of that group as builders and contributors, and their strict prohibition from participation is simply myopic, and obviously to some worthy of comment/objection. It doesn't mean they have a right to a free PC, but it does say: THG, you do yourself a diservice by ignoring the rest of your loyal readers who you feel have a 2nd class loyalty unworthy of recognition.

What kind of system do you think better embodies a global site operating on the borderless .net, pluralism or the segregation of parties into disaprate groups/castes?

Be interesting to see your answer, as a representative of the USofA.

But does this meet the minimum requirements for Vista?

That is the funniest thing I've heard in three days!

And technically the answer is that it's under spec for Vista with the gui enabled.

Anyways, for those complaining about the onboard audio... well, if they had to make a decision between a physics card and a sound card versus adding that second 7950 GPu, I'd rather they added the second GUP. ANyoen who reads this board shoudl be able to get their own sound card moved into it, but would not have a matched 7950 laying around to stick in it.

Frankly though, the 600wt does seem small for that.

I am a LONG TIME Toms hardware reader, but really never regustered until i saw this. This is shamefull, i am a big fan of the site, and read every article they publish, and i sit back and see how many times they have a contest, and am delighted, and get so excited, but when i am about to register, US ONLY. All the time, i not ever seen anything TG have anything for the rest of the world like Canada. I live in Toronto Canada.

I just had to get that out of my system, as it really started to annoy me as i can bet a very good precentage of readers here are internation from other countries and Canada etc.

otherwise great site, keep up the good work, and for the love of your reader, have NOT US ONLY contests.

Wouldn't mind having it, but then I'd want to go to TG Publishing head quarters and get it signed by the staff.

You hear me, THG Staff?! Give it to me, I'll personally fly out to Cali for signitures from ever single person in the building.

I'd use it until the warranty runs out, then put it in a show case along with my R.L. Ermy fan collection.

Reply to Halberd388

I think that all the fighting over "US ONLY" is great. It's absolutely hilarious to talk to people from other countries and listen to them blast the United States saying they hate us and what not, but when a contest with a prize this great roles around everyone throws up their arms in anger because they're not included. I am glad that the Anti-American readers are getting pissed, its almost poetic justice.

As for the people who do not blast the US, I really am sorry that you can not enter. I know that I for one would be upset too. But then again, life is a bitch and never fair so whats one to do. And no I have not looked into it, but I am sure that there are contests that Americans can not enter as well. :x But of course nobody cares because well, we're America and we're always the bad guy in the crowd.

EDIT:

Almost forgot. To all of you blasting the site for their choice in hardware you sound like little children on Christmas who didn't get exactly what they wanted. Its FREE. I would like to see you people go out and spend 10k on a computer. Onboard sound? Does it produce sound? Yes. Does the average person have the skill and knowledge to pick apart the quality between the onboard and say Creative X-FI? Hell no. You people are nit picking at things that work perfectly well. If you want to add a sound card after you win it, then do so. If the system doesn't fit your tastes, then don't enter.

I cant understand how any of you could be so negative about a $10,000 system just because you dont agree with some of the parts. Go build your own system and put what you want into it if it's such a big deal and don't bother entering. That way the people like me, and I am sure many others, have a better chance at winning it since we truly want to win this awesome machine.

I absolutely can not believe that people take the time to be upset about such minor things in life. It really goes to show how truly sad some people can be... :?

Everyone should keep in mind...

I'm sure that Tom would have happily offered the contest to absolutely anyone anywhere. But it's not really up to Tom.

It's about Lawyers and it's about Falcon-NW.

Clearly, Tom is not forking over 10k of his own cash to have this system built just to give it away to us. He managed to organize a deal with Falcon where Falcon gets a big burst of visibility on the website and Tom gets a system to give away. Falcon probably wanted to limit it to the US only to A) keep it simple legally and B) to focus on their core customer base. Being as they are the ones covering the bills on this, I'm sure they had the role of determining the contest rules.

So yall lay off Tom. He's doing the best anyone can in the situation.

"Typical" American. If your not an inbread redneck named Jed then get the hell out of our country. And drop the beer (discolored water) on the way out!!! No wonder the rest of the world doesn't like Americans. I'm not saying all Americans are like that, but jeeeesh buddy you take the cake. Heck I was looking for the JK at the end of the post. Best quality of life is in the US? Are you really that stoooopid? It's called Public Health Care, clean air, fresh water, and stable power systems!! (LOL about the power system though.) Not only Canada has Heath Care either. I can't remember which country it is, but one of the smaller ones over in Europe has an even better health care system. (From what I hear. I haven't had the pleasure of traveling Europe yet) Sure they pay like 40 - 45% Income tax, but all the health care is "free" to them! Just walk in, get fixed, walk out.

I sure hope the rest of the readers reading this post don't get the idea that all Americans are like this guy. I deal with anywhere between 20 and 150 different people a day (95% American) and while a great deal of them are arrogant asses, there are a lot of really nice (and educated about things outside of the US) American people there.

As for Tom's Hardware (Started in Germany where their Main Office is) defenitely should have opened this contest to others as well. Or at least offered other prizes. Big boo-boo Tom. I'm sure you are going to loose a few good readers and contributors to the Forumz. I think I may even add this site to the forbidden list on my ISA server. Even if this contest was for Canadians only I would still be pissed!! If you are a multi-national publication and you have a big kick ass contest for one segment you are going to hurt your relationship with the others. Especially when this much hooplah is generated for such said contest.

That being said just give us readers outside of the us a Prommie Mach II and we'll call it even!!

From your post, you are obviously one of the millions of Canadians who hate America for no good reason. Stop and think a bit about what causes your hate. Is it because the U.S.A. protects Canada and it's puny military force? Is it because the U.S.A. responded with a war after THOUSANDS were massacred in 9/11? Or is it because they support Isreal (a democratic country) rather than a radical terrorist group?

If you can honestly answer "yes" to any of those questions you should go live in Cuba, North Korea or Iran for a year.

There is a huge difference between what I said and what you think was said by me.

B.S. If they don't pay their duties they don't get their stuff. Simple, cut & dry. Not to mention WTF is the Free Trade Agreement? Free for Americans, but not Canada or Mexico.

Want an example? I can't easily order cheaply priced HTPC parts anymore from PCAlchemy because of canadians not paying their duties.

Not to derail the topic too much, but if you ask me, you are BOTH acting the sterotypes perfectly. Honestly, just put the mouse down and walk away.

well, this is all actually rather comforting to me. while i hear plenty of whining and bickering about stupid stuff in the US, i'm very pleased to find that we have nothing on those of you in other countries who have your panties in a bunch over this. i'm feeling much better about my country now. thank you for that.

I'm moving to a different state in the US next week.

I'm just curious if there is any possible way to change the address they have on file for my current user-account.

Anyone have any ideas (on this or any other prize).

don't worry. i'm sure on the tiny chance that you win, you can check the boards and email thg to let them know of your change. but with any luck you won't win and you can wait a little longer to start getting junk mail at your new address :)

All I can say is tomshardware is an excellent source for technical stats and testing of hardware. You have helped my clients choose what is best for their buck. For that I just want to say thanks on behalf of my company and all the people I help solve computer problems for. Your site is state-of-the-art and your staff is excellent at writing articles with the reader in mind. Kudos to all of you (I hope all of them get a bonus). Thanks again for all that you do for the world of technology. I would love to win this so I can experience a high end system, but by keeping my costs down I can do more for my customers. Thanks for everything Tomshardware. Your staff and site rules the world in the field of hardware technical testing.

No way this thing is $10,000...
Looking at some of the things that come with it:
Onboard Audio
Logitech G5 2000DPI Wired Mouse
Microsoft Wired Keyboard - Black
All trash! Logitech G7 mouse would be more appropriate and the Logitech G15 keyboard is probably the best gaming keyboard out. Onboard Audio?! Where is the X-Fi Elite Pro? You don't need a $10,000 computer to use Word or Excel. This is clearly a gamer rig. That being said, the mouse/keyboard/sound are just as important. By the way, I have both the G7 and G15, well worth the money, very useful in games and I get better accuracy with the G7 than with my old mouse.
Unless the warranty and the paint job cost a couple thousand, I don't see how this costs $10,000.
