i have a mp3 player that stopped working, but still worked as a flash drive, until now. it says it is write protected and i cant copy anything to it or delete files on it. whats weird is that i previously used it to copy and paste all my music files, and then a video, and only now has the write protection come up

I have this problem with both SD cards and USB pendrives.
XP Professional SP3.
The SD card was solved by the "soft insertion" method. It's amazing, it has an "analogic" feel to it - why should a delicate insertion be any different from a strong insertion? Isn't this a digital system? On/off? Yes/no? Zero/one?
The USB pendrive is even more mysterious. Using a combination of the previously discussed methods - right-click eject, pull off and re-insert, hardware tab properties - does seem to work, but it's a bit illogical.
You may get a "write-protected" error message, but next time you open the device, the file is there! Very peculiar.
The pendrive behavior varies with different machines (all with the same XP version.)
...
I find it a bit alarming that such basic, primitive problems cannot be solved by Microsoft. Years go by and the problems persist. Maybe Windows got too complex?

Total thanks! The little switch is right there and worked perfectly. What won't they think of next! I can add to the little disk with ease now.

Look for the switch. It is tiny.

copy things on to the disk. Like move from the big computer to the little disk.
