I was going to reply faster to Bomber, but it took me some time to go all the way down and find the reply button. Please don't post so much, it just pushed that button WAY down.
Nope, wasn't replying to anyone. I think I'll make mention should I post in reply to someone (bar the fact that I seldom have something intellectual to say)...
I think the "in response to" would be a nice customization to add to the system when tagging a posts "reply" button, but if you really wanted to you can just say "Mugz, you are a douchebag" or "Bomber, you would give douchebags a bad name" rather than just getting lazy and not putting down who you are replying to yourself...
Edit might be handy, spellcheck, titleblock on replies, smaller ID boxes for registered posters (so you do not have large boxes for a 2 line response), word wrap rather than fixed width....
yeah the in response to: was a great feature which im sure they will implement later(hopefully)
also, the ID boxes should be the same regardless, like your (NH) avatar is huge compared to everyone elses making your reply box thinner.
again, the spell checker shouldnt be a problem regardless they have those you can implement on any browser really.

I just followed the restrictions that were posted on there. You say the new ones can be 200x120 (or something similar).
I always liked the "letterbox" screenshot better than the box/avatar....
Anyway, I was kind of referring to the box height. If there is a way to make it less tall, it would make "LOL" responses take up much less room on the browser....
Well on day 2 of using it, I definitely don't like the new format. It reminds me of an apple computer that threw up...but without any benefits. Any reason for the change? The last forum change took a little time to get used to, but even from the beginning seemed like a decent idea. I'm realllly not seeing any good things in this change, while seeing a whole bunch of negatives. Is it too late to go back? :-D
The whole thing violates the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" principle. The learning curve is too much work for this old f*rt. I'm done with this forum. Time to find greener pastures. "Gonna lay me down in the tall grass and let me do my stuff..."
Become quote whores. Or submit it to the happy chappies to implement as a feature.
Well, Aazza, I struggle with the idea that quoting everything to have a conversation is a legitimate way of communicating on the boards. I have to tell you, I'm left flabbergasted as to understanding why the "reply to user/poster" button would be dropped. I mean, come now, it defies belief, to say the least. Ok. Here I am now and I appreciate the opportunity to feed-back to the crew some constructive remarks regarding the new boards. First and foremost though, I wish to again reiterate my firm belief that Toms is heading in the right direction in ever opening up "the world of computers" to lay users like myself. Simple, concise and succinct articles that address "video cards" etc, are fantastic for average joe users like me. The recent "best vid cards for july" article is an excellent example of this in action. I'm all for change, but let's get it right, eh.
Toms boards is the only online community that I'm an active member of. I take pride in the community that we have here so I can assure all that my feedback is most certainly sincere.
1. The reply to user/poster button is a must have, I believe. 2. The log-in font is ridiculously small. Buttons need to be larger for major tasks: quoting, pm'ing, profile, contacts list, help, etc... 3. The previous forums were easier on the eye; the overall layout was in a cool blue that is easy on the eye. 4. Make the code and user-friendliness of profile changing etc as easy as possible for new users. The new profile screen is not user-friendly in my book. The previous one was. 5. In all changes, the one thing that should be at the top of the list is this: does this particular change make the boards more user-friendly for both new and old users? 6. The post count should remain in under the user name. It's sparse there now without it and I thought it was a cool feature to have, if for no other reason that it meant a newbie thought twice about cheaply slagging off against the regs.
There's some tweaking to come, for sure, I believe.

The first change was definately a good one... the new software was a definate improvement over the old. However, this one I'm not so sure about. I suppose I can get used to it, but I still preferred the iForumz layout... all it needed was a bit of tweaking.
For all those who keep saying the reply-to-a-post button is at the bottom left, that's NOT the button we're talking about! We want a button that will create an "in-reply-to" type of post; that is, a reply which indicates the specific previous post it's in response to (just like we had before). The current function just adds a reply on the bottom of the thread without any context.

you can click on "xxxx wrote: " to jump back to the original post
you can click on "xxxx wrote: " to jump back to the original post
(Trying out the quote function )
Two comments on this suggestion:
1) This "click to jump back" feature is neat/cool idea, but seems to have a major flaw that prevents its use in practice: how does one then get back to the post that has the "xxxx wrote: " in it?
2) Using the "Reply, quoting post" function as a "Reply to this post" function is very cumbersome: one must manually delete everything in the quote except for the "xxxx wrote: " part, or clutter up the thread by leaving in unnecessary quotes. The functionality we're looking for here could be implemented as just a truncated version of the "reply, quoting post" function that instead of including "xxxx wrote:" and the quote, instead just includes something like: "In reply to xxxx:" and no quote.
BTW, thanks for your attention/responses to these threads, joce.

1) Usually I'm using the back button of the navigator (or the very left bouton of my mouse in my case).
You can also click on "Message quoted xxx times" to get the list of posts which have explicitely quoted or post
2) Thanks for the clarification, I was wondering what function you really wanted. So it would require an extra icon ? (removing the original quote function is not a good idea since it has its utility in many context)
Although the icon is not really explicit, first I thought it was the icon to send a PM I definitly prefer the silk icon theme, but unfortunately it contains some buttons in french

Yes, an additional icon for a slimmed-down quoted reply; this would just include the name/clickable link and not the whole post text. Such a function would pretty much replace the old post-specific "Reply to" function.
The envelope with the arrow is a perfect icon for "Reply to". In fact, to me, it just says "Reply to" and not quote. Change the quote to a chat bubble and use the envelope with arrow for reply.

I disagree. An envelope means EMAIL, not reply. It's confusing enough as it is already!
I agree that an envelope alone means email. When I see the envelope with an arrow though, I automatically think "reply" not "quote"... which is what it is. If they insist on using icons rather than text buttons, at least that small change would be a marked improvement.
One other beef (and probably only since i've been here for more than 5 years) - The join date looks like it got lossed in the shuffle! Everyone apparently joined the forums before I was born (including myself).
