Somehow I have full confidence that Linux will be able to support DX10 as well as they did with DX9........many windows games/appz and effects run in linux too. And it's all open source and for free. Does anyone know what you have to pay for vista soon? I bet it's some insane high price again just like they dare to do with xp who also showed too many errors that took years too fix. I'm done.

SyPheR, you are an idiot! Recommending that the OP (who probably dosn't know much about linux) plays games on Linux is the stupidest idea ever. There are many more bugs with directx on linux than in windows. Performance of directx is better in windows. Please stop recommending Linux to everyone for games. I like Linux and you are making it look like like stupid fanboy crap. Here is a Link from Wine to back up my statements. Notice XP runs faster on the majority of the benchmarks, and Wine wont even run a third of the benchmarks. I think wine is great, but what do you expect? It's emulated! There are other solutions as well, some even cost money, but all of them suffer from compatability and performance issues.

The OP was asking about a 300 dollar 939 processor, and you start posting quad-core AMD vs. Intel FUD. And on top of that, you start recommending Linux for direct-x games, like you actually know ANYTHING about Linux. Linux is much better off without stupid fanboys like you!

Are there going to be quad core 939 processors? No... so you want the OP to buy at least a new mobo, ram, and processor? Are you going to be able to get that for 300 dollars? Is it available now? No, and No. So keep your idiotic fanboy ideas to yourself and try to contribute in a constructive manner.

Reasons why sypher is an idiot:

1. Quad-core - you seem to know that quad core will perform better than dual-core procs. And will be fully used only in the future. But I do think that you pushing to go AMD quad-core as soon as possible is pure stupidity. As a lot of people have pointed out, most games that have been released today are only beginning to realize the full potential of dual-core processors. Sure in the future quad-core would be useful for games, but it is IN THE FUTURE! Also the insane price tag that quad-core would make it quite unattractive to most buyers.

Sure, quad-core would be fast, but as can be seen also on tom's quad-core review, games now don't benefit from quad-core. Sure production applications have a boost, but the topic of this thread is an ideal gaming processor now!

Also you say that quad-core will future proof the system. This is totally bs. You can see this with core 1 generation and core 2 generation. If you get a quad core now it doesn't really protect your investment. As a 2nd generation of quad-core (or 8?) would surely kick the bum of what would be realeased now. So maybe by late next year or early 2008, the quad-core today wouldn't be so hot. If the guy was talking about video-editing or other production processes then fine go quad, but it ain't!

Also about the intel procs only being "glued," quad-core is quad-core period. It may seem ugly to you since it is only glued together, but from the programmer's point of view quad is quad. AMD's may only be faster since it will be released later, but quad is still quad period.

BTW, why in hell's name would game developers "force" people to run on quad-core by early next year. Until quad-core floods the market, it would be economically insane to release quad-core only games, as no one would buy them.

Take for example Oblivion, if it were released during the time of the transition to dx9 cards, then very few people would play the game since it would require a video upgrade just for that specific game.

2. DX10 hardware - though off-topic , i'd also wan't to talk about this since you already introduced it.

As some people also pointed out that games would probably utilize tje whole of dx10's functionality by around half of next year. Ideally buying a new DX9 vid card for more than $300 is stupid as of now (well for me that is). Since fact is fact DX10 is knocking at the door. Though also another fact, most people wouldn't be upgrading their video card until maybe next year. And most people would adopt it by maybe after 2 years. (Unless of course if people get conned by sellers that would say that they need dx10 cards to run the eye-candy of vista).

Again like the quad-core thing. Game developers forcing people to need quad-core and DX10, when only the high-end stuff, by around half of next year would be economical suicide. That's why few companies are brave enough (from what i see) to announce vista only dx10 games. Why release a pure dx10 game when most people have dx9 video cards?

Linux - well this is only advisable if the person has actually used linux before, is a programmer (since sometimes the knowhow is really useful), or has enough patience to bear with (unless of course if the person only uses this as desktop environment, such as browsing, word, etc). Again as the thread states, the guy is looking for a gaming processor, so the idea is that the os should be also ideal for gaming. Also, say that a pure dx10 vista only game comes out. So what do you do now? Well you'll have to wait for a port or wine update to get the thing to run on your linux box. Yeah vista has its bugs, but which os doesn't. You are suggesting (though it looks more like "forcing" to me) dx10 hardware though not vista? This is idiotic as vista will be the first os to fully support dx10 software-wise and hardware-wise.

You americans just can't listen/read can you? I'm not recommending for gaming only.....I keep on saying that when you like to play some windows games in linux it's not impossible and sure I also talked about the benchmarks allready (I allready mentioned that linux is not that good as windows for gaming) so what is your problem talking dumbass noncence about me. Any game made on the open GL API will run on linux but how many games are? Hardly any and using a directX wrap over openGL is hardly a awnser. Stop reccomending things he doesnt want and crap that isnt going to do what he wants. Just for refference linux DOES NOT support direct X and WILL NOT support it as long as microsoft doesnt allow it. They cant its illegal for them to even code that API into thier software they would be sued out of business (which ever linux company did it) Not to mention its doubtfull they can even get the code to begin with.

Actually a friend of mine told me about a company that pays for a license to the directx api and coded it up for linux, you have to pay monthly (i think) to use the software though... wish i could remember the name of it. Supposedly it works somewhat decently.

Still stupid to reccomend linux for gaming though.

Licence the whole API? or key fetures (bare minimum needed to be DX workable) hell if they do the whole thing i learned something new.

Alright, now we get that you're saying that you're not recommending linux for gaming, only for desktop work(?).

I would agree that DX10, quad-core and a BETTER windows-linux mix is the future (though not all would be interested in the linux part).

I think that people are simply pissed off with your recommendations because they aren't simply ideal. Sure you say and its fact that these things are the future. But the cost of these things are simply insane for most people. Go ahead buy yourself what you recommend and be happy. I meanwhile am quite happy with sensibly priced, mid-high end parts.

Look only when you dont want to buy Vista it would change the story. But let's talk about CPU in this topic. As I was saying. Why buy an AMD X2 with a 939 mobo while for way less money you have a E6300 that will outperform the X2 easily. But I would still wait for the AMD Quad Core as many near future appz will make use of that power and you won't have to update for a very long time as this baby won't be stressed out for a long time. Ok this post im going to be nice since you didnt get all offensive. Here is why your posts to the readers in this thread is pointless. He doesnt have the money for what your suggesting he also didnt ask advice on it im sure the OP KNOWS these cpus are better however he asked for a spacific CPU for a board he already has to upgrade a system he already has to hold him over until he can save some money to get the system he wants. Now unless the cpu your trying to recomend will work ona 939 socket im whilling to bet he doesnt care about it since hes trying to get a cpu for his current motherboard. Problem is its not the same price its a whole new board all new ram and cpu. Also probably a new psu. Normaly i would give my opinion on other platforms if he had asked for it but i gave my opinion on what he asked for. Overall putting two dies together is actually practically the same performance wise, and much better for price/performance. I hope the K8L blows whatever Intel has out of the water, more performance for me. Nobody knows if this will happen, why are you recommending someone to wait for K8L which won't be released for over 6 months when nobody has any idea if it will even be better than Kentsfield which is available now?

Yes, in fifth grade i wrote a paper about how the technology and knowledge gained from spaceflight and sending people to the moon helped everyday people around the world. I showed how the money spent on spaceflight was able to help everyone across the board much more than if it would have used for welfare or other free government handouts. (Not that welfare, etc is all bad, its finding the right balance that helps everyone the most). Everyday technology from life saving medical equipment to food storage techniques for the poor and hungry to processor miniturization, and much much more have come from the space program of countries around the world (Not just the US). There is still much more to learn and explore. Funny, a fifth grader has much deeper insights than the blind hatred displayed by SyPheR.

Ahh i thought you were talking about what microsoft charges. This is nice but paying for it (open source OS) is kinda wierd. I realise your not paying for the OS Anyways someday i hope linux can game like windows at least then MS will HAVE to make better security for thier lvl of software. When you look to formula 1 and nascar (yes may sound crazy) you will see that these company's pumping millions of dollars into creating new high tech stuff for their cars you will also see how space travell benefits from that. Here is one fact you cannot contest. No one cares for your oponion he asked a simple question and you got his thread going into flames. I hope the OP got the info he needed out of this cuz i would be kinda pissed about how the thread turned out if it was me. Course then i would have simply told you from the begining to re-read my post and that i didnt care what quad core was better then the other.

Saying the not out AMD quad core is going to be better then the not out Intel quad core doesnt matter cuz i can say otherwise it doesnt make it anymore true. the FACT is you wont know untill its out.

The undesputable fact is your wrong. Not wrong about quad core being the future but wrong in thinking your advice or info has a point in this thread. Your also wrong in thinking the other people in this thread that have been trying to tell you this to the point of insulting you are wrong. The FACT is if you had never posted here he would have gotten the info he wanted and there never would have been a flame thrower added.

Thats alot of facts here is one last one. Last fact is you either arent reading what people are posting,chosing to ignore it, or simply dont understand english well enough to have this conversation.
