that case is crazy

Reply to skud

Crazy cool I presume you mean? 8)

Reply to tool_462

Very nice. People will pay good money for something like that. I know I would.

If you read my post carefully, you will note that I did explicitly say the url was primarily a reference point.

Thanks for the additional supply point. Where one gets the materials depends on where one lives - I live 30 min. drive from Exotic Woods - where do you think I will go? But their website includes very good photos of most of the woods they sell - including padauk, ziricote, pardo, pau - ferro, snakewood, zebrawood and many others. And so it goes

Wow this looks great, keep up the great work. :)

Just curious, do you work for this company?

8O That is one sexy looking case, Tool! Be sure to feed us a few more pics when you can. :D

Reply to db101

Heh no I don't work for that company. Looks like they trump my case in the looks category though. Mine is more functional for my use though.

It is just oak with a varnish on it. No stain or anything. I went oak due to supply and already having some scraps to use for the interior rad box. If I build another, more money will go into the wood though.

That case is AWESOME.

Out of interest, try putting it on eBay... It could be worth your while. I seriously think a lot of people would be interested in paying big bucks for a hand-crafted piece of awesomeness like that! :D

Very Nice Job Tool, I've been waiting to see the final results, sorry I didn't notice this thread sooner.

This needs no saying but that is one sweet rig. Would like to see lots more pics, so until then I'll just drule over the ones we got here.

Reply to Dade_0182

that case has very good .
hey can u kind of make a guide how u built it. It would be very helpful.

Reply to satan_jap

Cool, you live 30 min from them?... I live like... well... let's just say that anything close to that around me is a luthier... and he's about 3 hours away...

Very nice. That's a really good looking case. Takes the concept of building your own pc to a whole new level.

Reply to jonrem

The closest guide I have is the thread I linked to on page 1. Don't have time to dig it up right now, but the program SketchUp was helpful in making a rough drawing with dimensions to see how everything would fit.

eBay...not gonna happen :P I would have to develop a wide customer base first, then put it up. Not that I would ever put my first born up for sale. Still, maybe my second and third will hit market.

Reply to tool_462

Thanks man! Was waiting for your response 8)

We just used a 5/16" deep router cut and a Paslode air nail gun with tiny darts and filled and sanded the holes. The top is just rabitted and routed. I will try and post some better pics in the next week and a half, going to enter the "Rig of the Month" contest for a $500 gift certificate in Maximum PC magazine.

anyway it looks like he has a good shop to work in too.

Beauty job. Nice attention to detail. You see other wooden case mods on the net, but the finish/detail leave a lot to be desired. If i were you i would never sell that baby. It'll probably last for 50 years. LOL. It would be cool if you could get us a figure on the weight. It would have to be much heavier than steel. I'm guessing probably around 35-40lbs just for the case itself. Again..sweet job, and good luck in the Maximum PC contest... You may win, or at worst place in the top 3. :trophy:

Reply to 1Tanker

I have many more little details in my head that didn't get into the final project, simply because I wanted to get it finished before computers became obsolete :P The slides are lined with Teflon tape and all the fan screws are brass inserted with a rubber washer on each between the fan and case side.

The fans are routed 3/16" into the case wall, about the thickness of one of the plastic *corners* on a normal 120mm fan if you know what I mean.

Every wire is sleeved and will be better routed if I ever get off this damn chair at work and get back to my room to work :) Originally the drive was stealthed with a thin veneer covered bay cover, but it was too plain on the front so we took it off and just routed the edge of the hole a bit.

Believe me, if I had about 40 hours a week for a few weeks of free time and a few hundred bucks, I would have taken no shortcuts. I still may paint all the interior aluminum but am not sure what color.

yeah tool was thinking about slide out trays for some of the components
and i think the rollerbearings from a toolbox would be cool.

but his setup is great no matter what.

he is probably going to make some more, and if so he colud
change a few things here and there, refine it as the prototype is
awsome.

hell if i can dig up a little extra cash i might have him make one for me.

i would want the darker cherry wood as that would compliment
my polk audio speakers nicley.

Reply to sirheck

I will weigh it when I take it home, only scale I know of around here is the one in the weight room and I'm not bringing it in there :P I still guesstimate around 55lbs +/- 5 lbs because I have 60lb dumbbells in my room and my carrying strap form my old LanBoy allows me to curl the case and it feels roughly the same. I don't plan on doing it again so dont ask! I don't trust the strap enough to carry it around...

Reply to tool_462

i really want to make something comparable bad. i love building stuff, but ive never been very good.

Reply to ReverendGadgetBoy

I was thinking a deep but bright red. Nice match with my *generally* red and blue cable sleeving and tubing that is not apparent in those pictures. I am going to ask around the dorm tonight for someone that has a digitial camera and get some new ones to enter the contest.

The removable motherboard tray was too difficult to impliment in a clean way. But the screws used to hold anything that may need to be removed are quarter turn, brass locking screws that can be removed very quickly.

Also thought a pure black like the radiator which I painted and still have the paint. No I didn't paint the fins... :P

Reply to tool_462

Rev, you supply the ideas and components, find a friend to supply the tools :)

Reply to tool_462

Cant complain about it matching with black. Mom says everything matches black!

Seriously, with all the bills around, I can't even afford $200 bucks for your beautiful case.

But hey, it's awesome. When you're done with it, consider selling it. Who knows? You may even be able to open a company.

Blueprint?

I've been wanting to build this case ever since you started the first thread. The only problem is that I'm not good in a woodshop. I dont see how I would join the wood and make the spaces for the harddrives and power supply.

case1

case2

case3

case4

I also have no idea how i would fabricate the metal parts and make the brakets for the optical drive.

Anyone got any ideas...or wanna do it for me!

jhalf.

Reply to jhalf

I may make another or a couple more and sell them. Not going to sell my first one though, I just finished wiring it last night and my new OCZ GameXstream PSU looks amazing in the bottom of it with the light blue fan and black sleeving. Will post more pics late this weekend or early next week.

jhalf: You would have to have some of that aluminum fabricated for your case in particular. The curved wood on the front is probably beyond my skill level but you may be able to find someone that can make pieces for you and you just make the box/bottom dividers.

Yea, when I go back to school I might start shopping around (If I have the money) and start asking the ag department if anyone can do it. I might try some different designs though. Sketchup Is friggin' awesome!

Reply to jhalf

It is a really cool program. It helped me put my ideas onto paper and make sure everything would fit how I wanted.

Thanks nprevatt!

Nice wood case.

One thing that kinda bothers me about the setup is how you got all the water cooling setup.

It's basically where the the pump is and radiator. Usually I see the pump on most water cooling systems are placed lower then the radiator. So the pump does more pushing then pulling. Just wonder how much stress will be on the pump trying to pull up the coolant.

Hope it still works out for ya.

Reply to Grimmy

In a T-Line setup it shouldn't matter. The pump's outlet goes to the rad, and from there it inlets from the CPU block. Any water the pump *pushes* is pushing back on itself. Also, the pump is running on level 1 out of 5 and is one of the most powerful pumps you can buy. Being that I am only cooling with one block right now, I'm not worried about it.

The placement was somewhat of an afterthought, originally it was going to be behind the radiator box, but we decided it looked better where it is and that way I could use minimal tubing which clutters the case. Initially (when you get into water cooling) lots of tubing looks cool, but after a bit, one realizes that a clean case with only tubing where is required looks good. At least to me it does, and it's my case :P

I really need to get some new pics up though, those are terrible and this OCZ GameXstream really brought the bottom to life. I'm thinking about sticking a 4" cold cathode in the top corner of the rad box to light up those fans a bit. Looks cool when they are spinning and you can see through them to the rad and out the bottom of the case.

Might add a blue cathode for "underglow" too, have to pick up another inverter though, gave my extra to a friend.

Ahhh... k, wasn't sure which way the outlet was going, but that makes sense.

Though, it just seems gravity is working against the pump.. But hey, if it works, it works. :D

1337 enough so that we may be graced with the presence of dasickninja

I figured the water is going from here to there to here again, if you go up the stairs you gotta come back down. Swiftech told me the pump would operate in any orientation with no change in performance. I made sure to call and see if the impeller was a centrifugal one like a jet boat. If they operate sideways they can damage themselves. The rep told me it was fine and if something happened they would cross ship me a new one for no charge.

I am going to. Need a better digital camera though.

It was originall going to be made of cherry wood but I had trouble finding a 10" wide board in the quality I wanted. I like the oak though.

Do you have a web cam?

Reply to 1Tanker

No, but this kid behind me says I can see his digital camera maybe sometime.

Was at work and my coworker was bothering me. I don't have a webcam but am trying to find someone with a decent digital camera. This is one of those times I wish I lived close to home :?

I can build you one... say $500?

With thermaltake cases going for $200+, I'm sure you could get $500 for a custom wooden case, EASY.

Is that BTX?

Reply to Whizzard9992

Not BTX regarding the mobo placement. The PSU is on the bottom though, I'm used to having my PC on my right side at my desk so I chose to build it with the clear window more visible than the tinted window.

I wish I had the time to build a couple more. Summer could very well see a few builds that could net me some decent money.
