Starting to look like what a good tech friend of mine does to systems he gives away. It brings back memories.

So with all those predrilled case holes, none would lineup to actually use case fan mounting screws, they have self cutting threads, good grief talking about a monkey rigged fan setup, at least go get some cable wire ties.

The first thing that I did was reversing the top-mounted fan from intake to exhaust. Although my system can use intake, that part of the case is ideal for exhaust since heat rises.


I had noticed that the hard drive bay and thus the hard drive were getting very hot since the warm air from the system would get in there and not get out. So I mounted a TT 80mm fan in the hard drive bay. I didnt have to do any fancy jerry-rigging, it fit right in. I set it for intake.


The Next thing I did was to add ANOTHER 80mm TT fan to the bottom-front of the case. Like the hard-drive-bay fan, it draws air in through the big vent in the front covered by the badge:

I used the Silverstone FM82 fan for this since it has a slightly higher CFM rating. Previously I had thought that it was a mistake buying this fan because I had no 3-pin fan connectors, but I saw today that my Zalman VF700Cu comes with a molex to 4x 3pin splitter. So:


Hey, I aint dont yet. I then moved the top mounted fan to the front-back of the top vent and added ANOTHER TT80mm fan. Thats right the 5th (and final fan) that I bought.
Now this might make some mad, but since I had no twist-ties left (I already had raided my fridge and freezer leaving several loaves of bread unprotected).. I used a rubber band... as soon as I find more twist-ties I'll redo it.

About the XPS Gen 3, this seems to be a design flaw in all of them, my friend had one and it gradually got louder and hotter until the CPU actually blew up and he had to replace the mobo and CPU. The new Dells seem to have a very much improved solution because the E510 I'm using right now had a massive 120mm fan that blows over one of the best designed heatsinks I've ever seen. It seems to rarely get above about 35C.

I think if you bother Dell about your issue they will send you an improved version of the cooler (and a new mobo for some reason..) My friend just called them up when his burned up and they shipped new parts out the next day. Your solution seems to work fine though.

Did they say what the flaw was?

i just remembered that my strange psu has two 40mm fans bringing my total count up to 11 8)

My previous box had 10 fans (including the 2 in the CPU, one on the GPU and one on the CPU). The noise was practically unbearable (the motherboard only had 2 fan headers...) until I'd hacked together a temperature-sensitive fan speed controller (okay, I ripped one out of a dead AOpen PSU and hacked a few heavy-duty components in to replace the ones that were going to blow with the load...).

Good grief, now it's starting to resemble my old rig - overtaking it, actually.

most of the noise is from the PSU and the three Dell 88mm fans. The Zalman VF700 is pretty much silent.

The 5 80mm fans do increase the noise a bit up from say 40dB to 42dB.

I sleep in the same room. Its not that bad....

The PC that I was going to build (before a new caviar revived my XPS) was going to be very quiet using a Corsair HX520, ACF7P, Noctua fans. a VF900. in a Antec P180. Silence is bliss. Right now though, my PC is fast enough for me. My new 7600GT can play F.E.A.R. at 16x12 med settings 40fps. Thats all that I need.

I am revisiting this thread after getting the XPS Gen 3 out of storage. The supplied Maxtor disc had been failing and I chose to get a Samsung.

Looking at the shroud again, the black plastic insert does not make sense and seems to be blocking the fan. The air doesn't have much room to move.

So I removed the black plastic strip - it ripped in half because the folds seem pre-cut. So if I reinsert the strip I also have to repair it.

I didn't add any extra fans unlike BillCat4 who added an enormous amount. Will it be OK?
