jys84,
I actually have no first hand experience with the stock cooler and the associated mounting pins, because I throw them in the trash. In my opinion the stock cooler is substandard for OC cooling. Enough said.

Yep ... though the monsters from the old P4 D series were good ... had to be, just like the copper ones from the last of the Bartons.

Geofelt is pretty much on target, especially regarding the "diagonal" approach to securing the posts. I have installed several of the E6XXX processors using the stock HSF and discovered a “trick” with regard to mounting. The top posts of the pushpins have a rather unusual shape consisting of two straight edges forming an “L” shape with a “circular” edge connecting the ends of the “L”. From my experience, if the bottom edge of the “L” is lined up with or parallel to the circumference of the heat sink, the pins “pop in” easier, provided the black inner-post is retracted before insertion. I use 91% isopropyl alcohol to clean surfaces and a clean 100% cotton swatch or rag from an old t-shirt. I have tried Arctic Silver's suggestion of using the "bead" or "line" approach but have gotten better results with a thin uniform layer spread out from a spot of AS5 about the size of a grain of rice. I use "powder free" surgical gloves (a whole box is cheap and they come in handy for other purposes as well) and my index finger to apply the paste.

Good Luck!

I went ahead and purchased a AP7, and also RMA'd the processor to Newegg. Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions.

So basically 90% of Intel's processor boxed sets could be RMA'd, because their warranty covers defective thermal solutions. That is rather sad.

So I am going to RMA my processor. However, I noticed that the e6750 is now the same price as my e6550 when I bought it. Since Newegg can't charge restocking fees for a defective product, would it be possible to convince them to "return" my e6550 at the same time I RMA it, and then have it replaced by the e6750?

Thanks for the information. I got patri and I wasn't sure about spiritu, but I couldn't put the whole thing together. That's pretty sad considering how many times I've said that in English.
