RE : My Computer Turns On For 3 Seconds, Then Shuts Off !!
This may help someone reading this thread.
I had this problem in the last few days after a newly built high end graphics computer, and on first power-on it shuts down 3 seconds later.
Double checked all connections without sucess.
After reading this thread, I worked my way changing PSU, heatsink, PCI cards, HD and the CPU - NO LUCK it still shuts down.
I have noticed that after it shuts down - and with power off from the mains plug - but as I plug it back to power from the mains, it powred on its own and shuts down again.
This, in my case, lead me to the CULPRIT, the new tower case front
ON-OFF button (back spring) was sticking on - ON - !!
So its worth checking it first, even if its a new case.
I just did, I double checked with the manual and everything. Could the short be coming from the case?
The only thing I have connected is the power supply (of course), the CPU, and the Front Panel Connectors, thats it. Both fans (PSU, CPU) turn on for 3 seconds.
If u dont want to take a screw driver and turn it on by shorting the header or something then put the reset button in place of the power button i had the same problem and found out it was a faulty power button im now using the reset buton as the power swich casuse i couldent afford to buy a new case AND HURRY THIS PROBLEM PUT ME THROUGH 3 MOBO'S.
1st M2N-SLI (gone) 2nd M2N-SLI (gone) 1 XFX nFORCE 750a sli (gone) im now preserving my M3A78-T (just) by using the reset button as the power and remember to leave the POWER SWICH UNPLUGGED
And another thing i no this has absolutly nothing to do with above, but i jus bougt a new raidmax smildon case, had it for 3 days and suddenly the power button packed up, HOW!?!?!?!?
Yo dudes im havng the same problme here hw du i fix the shortng of the case becuse one apon a time mine workd fine tl i waz switchng hardrives n this hapned it was working again early today bt nw it died on me again help plz guyz...

HI! Exactly the same problem here! Solved by clearing the CMOS memory. There is usually a reset jumper wich will erase the bios config and bring it back to factory settings. i did that and it worked. Can't really explain what happend coz the same as you guys i just turned off my pc last night like allways and this morning it start doing the restart thingy and i did'n touch enything inside?!? Enyway i am glad i didn't had to spent days loking for a solution and i hope it will work for you too! Ciao'
My Computer Specs are the Follow:
Power Supply: OCZ GameXStream (700W) OCZ700GXSSLI ATX12V Power Supply 100 - 240 V
Motherboard: Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX
Memory: CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-PIN DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Windsor 2.6GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor
Video: eVGA Geforce 8800 GTS 320 MB
When I turn on the computer, it turns on for 3 seconds then it shuts down automatically. I don't have a chance to see anything on the screen. This morning the computer turned on just fine, and it shut down just fine. I never had a hardware problem. The computer is brand new, I built it this year in May.
No sound happens during this 3 second period. All fans turn on just fine, even the power supply one.
I troubleshot by disconnecting just about everything from the power supply like hard drive, cd-rom, video card.
Is there anything else I can do before taking the power supply and test it in another computer? I posted on this forum because I think the power supply is the problem, it could be the motherboard also I suppose.
Thanks in advance ^^
there's someone else on this forum has the same or similar problem in regards to swtiching on and then turning off 3 seconds then turning back on. try checking the link bellow.
like everybody else in this forum has suggested, try taking out your mobo and place on a cardboard and connect everything but the cable coming from the case. and use tweases.
You missed one of the reasons for building outside of the case, which is removing all connections to the case. remove all case connections and short the power switch pins with a paper clip or screw driver as I said earlier. there is no real power on those pins it's just ground sensing. It's not dangerous, just touch the two pins together momentarily. If the mobo still resets with both PSUs, then remove the VGA to rule it out. It should beep but stay on. If not try removing the RAM, same thing. Post the results.
Thanks, this helped me find that my memory was causing this problem for me. *Thank God, cuz my computer had been working just fine till this morning.*

I've registered only to thank you. I've been fighting a battle against my PC for the past couple of days, trying to find out what was making it turn off randomly. I knew it weren't the temps, my cooling system is great, and I tested each and every part of it, funny thing is, I did test it out of the case using a screwdriver to turn it on and it worked flawlessly, but, after I put it back in the case after some time it began all over again, I started to believe that it could be a shorting somewhere on the case, but no, it was the bloody on-off button, how could one even cogitate that such an insignificant component could be the problem? Well, you certainly got it right and I'm really thankful that you did, so again, THANK YOU.
P.S. I took the little bastard out and put a replacement I took from an old case in it's place, now everything is perfect again.
