Last message on previous page: Lol looks like a medium gaming config with some media apps for you, one thing though, your power supply is waaaay overkill for that system.
Well that makes sense, but remember, duel card graphics are hit and miss right now, and sometimes it does nothing to help your game play, sometimes hindering it instead, ie. 2 256 mb card does not give you 512 mb of ram, the cpu and the game itself will only treat it as 256 mb of ram, even though you have 2 cards, your bandwith for the cards is also the same case.
I know - but since I want to run a 24" Dell Monitor at 1920x1080... I'm going to get hold of Supreme Commander (I loved TA), but my current laptop can't go near it - 1.6 Pentium M, 1GB Ram and Radeon 9600 Pro (128 MB)...
Also not sure if I want 8GB of RAM or not - since I want to be able to run some VMs for me learning .NET programming at home... Other option would be to buy a second box an run SQL Server etc... on it...

Lol, well for the next 3 years that card by itself will be fine, supreme commander is a cpu killer, true, and it hits your card pretty hard. As for 8 gigs of ram, man i run BF2142, TEAMFORTRESS2, Ventrillo, Zone alarm pro, Xfire, and have multiple tabs open in IE and see only a 40 % usuage of my 4 gigs on VISTA, and I have multiple gadgets going in the side bar also.
Yeah - but I am looking at running SQL Server and Visual Studio and maybe one or two other VMs (e.g. SharePoint or something). Of course I am also thinking of just getting a 4GB machine for gaming/development and getting another box with Q6600, 8GB but no GPU to run as a server - running Server 2003 or Server 2007... Of course the cost is an issue... What to do... What to do...

P4 at work with 512 MB of RAM... They have a 3 year lease cycle - and mine has another 2 years to go!!! GM of IS said that I don't need a better machine then the people I am developing for!!! Arrrgghhhh.
Laptop at home, but don't currently have anything other then Express Edition stuff - looking at getting VS Pro with MSDN subscription... Up until recently I've been doing PowerBuilder, so trying to move towards .NET!!!
Well, the maxing out option is why I have been thinking 8GB RAM...

To be honest a server is there just to transfer information, and any apps you have will run off of your comp, even if installed on that server unless you use a remote desktop, which at that point i would ask why run apps on the server..... but i digress, buy 4 gigs for it, bigger harddrives or more, and viola, instant server, at little to no cost. lol
What about gifts? What about pulled processors at Newegg? What about open box? That's not stealing.
I bought an MSI barebones with an Nvidia 405 chipset 6100 motherboard. Then, while the barebones was on the way, I saw a bundle at Fry's with an Athlon X2 3800+ and the identical MSI motherboard. I went to Fry's and got the bundle. Since I'd already had a better CPU on order, I built a system for my wife. This was February 2007.
In September, I switched our CPU's to 690G boards, since 780G was running late. I saw an X2 4200+ bundled with a gig of DDR2 667 at Newegg, and bought it for a Christmas present. I upgraded the friend's PC (he had an old P4 white box) with one of the Nvidia boards I wasn't using and all he had to do was buy another stick of DDR2 667. Then, he just had to save up for a GPU.
If one wants the latest and greatest from either company, the deals aren't there, unless you have a rich relative, but otherwise, there are good bundles at Fry's, online and sometimes a friend has a pulled processor either really cheap or free. I've bought from friends who had better systems then mine but who had the upgrade jones. I've given to friends who had worse than mine.
When to upgrade. When you need to based on what you want to do. My Nvidia board didn't like ATI cards (it was in the manual, but I've posted it here too many times. No one's answered whether that was the only Nvidia chipset with that issue). My 7600gs was a stopgap until decent DX10 (ie the 8800gts 320 wasn't enough last spring). I decided I wanted to go back to ATI and switched boards. Now, I'm just using the X1250 IGP until I get a new PSU from Newegg that has a 6+2 connector for my newly arrived 3870x2.
Yes, I didn't go Intel for the latest. I didn't take a chance on B2 Phenom either. The two rules in upgrading are that you can wait forever as something better is just up the pike but if you don't upgrade based upon your needs matched to your budget, then you're missing out on some great computing.
Employee discounts and such. I do not steal or scam people, I am not white trash.
I was born white trash, but I moved up in the world. Besides, white trash doesn't mean a thief. It means a person who was born poor, who's family wasn't educated and who often lives perched on a hillside in Appalachia, or in a trailer park in a small town in Appalachia. Like most derogatory ethnic terms, it was used by one social group to refer to another.

Being patient and knowing when to strike pays off. As a society we are too impatient and expect quick fixes too much.
I wanted a Q6600 since they came out but history told me whe something new came out that would fractionally better the price would be cut in half. So on Black Friday I picked up a boxed Q6600 from FRY's with a junk Combo MB for $198.00. Did not have to get up early and wait in long line either.
Another issue is that there is no consideration during these post to "Total Cost of Ownership" combined with price/performance. It is alluded to here and there but not usually in a unified argument. That is what most people are looking for when they ask the question of upgrading and that would be a more complete answer. The task at hand that a person does day in and day out is what should be driving the buy decision. When I become an early adopter I forgo all logical reason if I am only doing mundane tasks. The cutting edge CPU's are for business use because if they are rendering and can get a CPU to render 25% faster then time is money. They can get 25% more work done and thus accept new work for a bigger bottom line. A $1000 CPU gets amortized very quickly. Home users don't have a profit schedule and it is mostly braggers rights and consumerism. -- BUT it works for us that are willing to wait.
This weekend I am geting around to installing the Q6600 into a Maximus Formula SE MB. I have a E4300 @2.8 Ghz and an E6400 @ 3.0Ghz so there was no real NEED but I waited for the bargain.
Buy the Q6600 now if you need it or can get it at a great price. Nahelem will be delayed because of AMD and it will have a higher cost of ownership with no benefit to a majority of users. Software developers are at least 2-5 years behind the hardware before the applications are optimized for the new capabilities of the CPU's.
I want a 3870x2 but I will be waiting for Nvidia to release their card so I can get a lower price. (I won't be buying Nvidia, just using them for competivive pricing-unless their price performance blows ATI out of the water.) The early adopters pay for the R&D and the advertising. I just want to pay for the product.
I will not be going penryn untill the Nahelem is released. The total cost of ownership increases dramitacally when a new socket is released OR if you change platforms. My other 2 Motherboards are ASUS (consumer level)workstation boards, all LGA775. As long as processors I upgrade to are in the LGA775 family I am fine.
I do financial trading and with the advances in the market only one company is ready to release software that can take advantage of multi cores-and I do not use their software.
I also game and want to go back and play Crysis& COD4 on the Q6600 and the x1900xtx I currently have and then when I get my new 3870x2(probably summer). What else is coming out that can make me need a faster better card before that time?
If anyone is interested my other boards are the P5W64-WS PRO, and the P5WDG2-WS-PRO both from ASUS. Stability and longevity(ROCK SOLID) as ASUS says.
How about my 5 year old P4P800? Still keeps on kickin. Asushas a great reputation for both reliabilty and performance and not to mention great features.
Don't get a new computer until you desperately need one. If you think that you really need a new computer, just check out my specs. I am still satisfied with my current pc.

Intel Pentium 4 @ 2.2GHZ | Intel D850MV Motherboard | 512MB PC800-45 Rdram | Nvidia Geforce FX 5500 256MB | Western Digital 80GB IDE Hard Drive
Got a late generation Pentinum (Pent D), skip Conroe and do Penryn.
Oops, unless you need today, then do today.
Skipping generations lets you upgrade CPU every 2 to maybe 3 years to take advantage of Moore's law, while avoiding the small 10 or 20% improvement that just sucks $ from your wallet.
I would agree with you on the concept, but disagree with the generation.
IMO, you should always wait for the 2nd generation of a particular product than the first iteration. This usually means better performance, lower heat dissipations, and possibly lower cost.
skip Conroe for Penryn, and skip Nehalem for Sandy Bridge.
I think Nehalem is definitely worth the wait. Intel is really raising the FSB speeds because 2 or more cores really need to transfer more faster. With quickpath, the problem will be solved. Also, entirely shared cache, SMT, integrated memory controllers, native quad and octo core designs. I'd like to see the overclocking with these also.

Pentium D 3.0 GHz :: 2x1GB DDR2-667 OCZ RAM :: XFX 7600GT at 580MHz Core, 1600Mhz Memory :: WD 250GB HDD :: OCZ 600W PSU :: Asus mobo :: Antec aluminum case :: Samsung 19 inch 4:3 monitor
Yes, it is good stuff. Worth the wait? I don't know. I have a Q6600, so it's definitely worth the wait for me, I can wait for a long time, and will. Others, that are hating it, might want to upgrade while they wait.
