Reponse to Amiga500 "Is that why MS are apparently Cutting Vista Prices"

No, Too paraphrase a 247WS artical today.  MS is planning on cutting the price for the same reason - How do you sell a lemon, You cut the price.  Not good PR from a financial web site.

My point still stands - It's the consumer, and joe blow average stock holder that takes it in the shorts.  Either thru price hikes, or reduced functionality, reduced stock value.

Yes, that is funny. Once Britain beat the Germans in the battle of Britain, and the Axis was stopped at Stalingrad, the German army's days were numbered. The Americans played no role in either.

The US played no role in winning the battle of Britain? Thats total BS and you know it. Without lend lease, American money and weapons and the blood of our soldiers Britain would have fallen for sure. Show some damn respect.

I think if you own a honda then you should only use it as a daily driver because you need fuel economy.  I had 2 and I hated seeing people "fix them up" by putting fart cannons on the rear that look like you can shoot a pumpkin out of.

The concord is a decent car.  If it gets you to where you want to go and does it in the fashion and with the comforts that you like, all the better.

I love the RX-7 and 8 because they both look great and are the only cars in america with rotary engines.  But ford owns them...

VW, they are overpriced for what you get.  I don't care that your diesel car gets 40-mpg, my dads 93 honda civic luxury got 43-mpg (on a bad tank) and that was on gas (it is gone because a stopped civic at a stop light vs. 75-mph F250 that didn't slow down for the light, guess who won).

But like I said... or meant to say.  The car is only as good as you think it is.  Its all personal preference... and what you need it for.

I agree with Endyen here. US played nearly 0% in the Battle of Britain. Nearly all of the planes used in the battle were British made. All of the fighter pilots were British.

I would probably agree with the financial support from American, but the others are utter BS. The blood of our soldiers? Only 7 of pilots were US, and two of them were KIA, compared to thousands of casualty on British side, and 27k civilian casualty.

I do commend US pilots' effort in the battle, but to say that without US, British would fall is completely false.

Yup. And when the next hurricane hit Huston TX there was nothing half as bad as New ORleans. They had the worst government I have seen. Plus they just wanted to blame Bush since he is an easy target although Bush warned the Govenor and Mayor and they just sat there doing nothing.

The Contour is an absolute pile. I had one as a company car and it was only slightly better than a Pinto. Pinto-Tempo-Contour.........all legends.

American cars or nothing special, but my VW and Benz see the shop a lot more often than my Chevy or Jeep.

I've had the same trim section fall off my VW 5 times and random electrical issues. The only reason I keep it is because it is a TDI and pulls 40MGP at 75MPH.

Whoa...... your company obviously did nothing to take care of that Contour. Plus if it was a 97+ with the ZeTec it kinda had no power. The 95/96 ZeTec had lots of power. But I have a 99 w/the 2.5 DuraTec and let me tell you, it is not a Tempo or a Pinto. Hell one of the best selling cars in Europe is the Mondeo aka Contour in the US.

There is no "special" car anymore. Unless its a unique one. Like the Corvette or the Ford GT. But I have heard horror stories about BMW's and have had a 06 Corolla's engine go boom on me. It just depends on how you take care of the car. And so far my Contours have been great minus the idiot mechanices who crack oil pans or put small brakes on my back tires.

Since when were WMP and IE free? Because they are bundled? All the programs do is increase the initial cost of the OS, sure we have the choice to not use the products, but are we given the choice to not buy them? Development isn't free and that cost is passed down regardless.

yomamafor1 - You are endyen are correct in the narrow context that America did not provide planes or pilots (Very few) in the battle of Britain (ended Oct 1940).

The battle of Stalingrad, however, (August 1942- February 1943) was similarly fought without US soldiers or weapons but lend lease was well under way by then.

What I most disagreed with (and got me a bit riled up :)) was the implication that the Axis were defeated by the British and Russia without much help from the USA. The USA lost more soldiers in WWII than Britain. Endyen implies that the US could have sat out the war and Britain and Russia would have faired just fine. That I disagree with.

Lend Lease sent a total of $50.1 billion (equivalent to nearly $700 billion at 2007 prices) worth of supplies: $31.4 billion to Britain, $11.3 billion to the Soviet Union, $3.2 billion to France and $1.6 billion to China.

Most belligerent powers cut back on production of nonessentials severely, concentrating on producing weapons. This inevitably produced shortages of related products needed by the military or as part of the military/industrial economy.

For example, the USSR was highly dependent on trains, yet the desperate need to produce weapons meant that only about 92 locomotives were produced in the USSR during the entire war. In this context, the supply of 1,981 US locomotives can be better understood. Likewise, the Soviet air force was enhanced by 18,700 aircraft, which amounted to about 14% of Soviet aircraft production (19% for military aircraft)[5].

Although most Red Army tank units were equipped with Soviet-built tanks, their logistical support was provided by hundreds of thousands of US-made trucks. Indeed by 1945 nearly two-thirds of the truck strength of the Red Army was US-built. Trucks such as the Dodge ¾ ton and Studebaker 2.5 ton, were easily the best trucks available in their class on either side on the Eastern Front.[6] US supplies of telephone cable, aluminium, and canned rations were also critical.

Lend Lease was a critical factor that brought the US into the war, especially on the European front. Hitler cited the Lend-Lease program and its significance in aiding the Allied war effort when he declared war on the US on 11 December 1941.

We lost over 400,000 soldiers in that war. I just want the record straight.

The American media sucks.  They must think (and are probably correct) that the American people are so stupid, apathetic, and willingly uninformed that they need to be told what to think.

I used to watch Fox News religiously.  It suited me well as I am a fiscal conservative.  But I'm so sick and tired of Republicans making Americans hated targets, that I can't stand the arrogance of Fox News anymore.

So I switched to CNN news.  They're just as bad, but without the radical right slant.  They can never report, they always have to tell you what it means.

The news organizations pretend to be balanced by having one person represent each side of an issue.  But they always pick an accomplished speaker to present the side that the organization agrees with and dig up some no-name to present the other side and let everyone talk over that person.

I agree completely TC. Very hard to find news thats not slanted. If I watch anything it may be the Newshour with Jim Lehrer once a month. Seems theres no middle anymore. Tough sledding for a fiscally conservative Democrat. :)

No worries. Your stance is correct: If it wasn't for American soldiers' lives, as well as other Allied nations' contribution, Europe (with the exception of Britain) would likely be speaking German now.

However, the victory of Battle of British was NOT because of United States, but because the strong will of British people, and their leader, Winston Churchill. Without Churchill, British would've just given up when Hitler started air-raiding London.

As for Battle of Stalingrad, I'm not entirely sure on it. I'm fairly certain that United States gave monetary support for Russia. However, Russia fought the battle with their own men and own equipment. They took heavy losses in that war, and you should also give them credit for that.

That's certainly true. I remember seeing a photograph of the distribution of US supplies and rations in England.

No one doubted the US's contribution in the war, just not a specific battle (Battle of Britain). As I said before, majority of Europe would fall under German control if it wasn't for US's intervention in the war. For example, the most famous D-Day was mostly US backed. Operation Market Garden were both US and British backed, although it was a failure. Battle of the Bulge was stopped mostly by US, and it was the last offense Hitler could offer. Europe's air superiority was won mostly by US's P51s. Most of the bombing were conducted from B-17s and B-29s. US Sherman tanks were the most widely used tanks on the ground, with Thompson making its fame after being so widely used by Allied forces.

The Germans would still have bled themselves out attacking Russia, and the mismatch of resources would have led to only one winner.

I feel bad that we nuked Japan, but at the same time, I think we probably saved more lives by using nukes than if we had duked it out.

Look... Insane costly regulation and hudge fines dont do anything. If you commit a crime you GO TO JAIL. Jail is the greatest deterant on the planet for these types of things. One of the many reasons these companies play games is because they factor in the cost of doing so as an exceptable loss. We here in the US drove up the cost of everything with super regulation and fines that pass cost on to the consumer. Its out of control world wide. The EU doenst give a **** if you break the law. The central banking system loves it when a company like MS breaks the law. All the EU is doing is insulating the richest people on the planet from the same penalties the rest of us face and its flat out wrong.

That might have something to do with the fact that nearly every single system being sold has Vista on it now. As Vista became the norm its only natural the price would go down. Its not like other things in the world. They have no problem mass producing software.

interesting idea about just a straight russia vs. nazi germany campaign, but I cant see the russians defeating the germans without the fronts in italy and france, and the strategic bombing.  Germanys industrial base was likely large enough if left alone to sustain an indefinite stalemate across a narrow front from hungary up to the polish coast.
