Sounds good to me. I just hope ocing with a G35 shipset won't take to big of a penalty.
Isn't G35 based off the P35 chipset but with onboard graphics? I'm fairly sure thats how it works. Not sure why you're considering G35 instead of P35 though unless you need the IGP - do you already have the mobo?
Not true. I have often recommended AMD dual-core products. However, because of the current state of AMD's K10, I do not recommend AMD for any Quad-Core setups. In fact, I have even recommended some people to wait for B3 because they have a Phenom compatible motherboard.
However, in the poster's situation, he's basically doing a new build. If he's doing a new build and wants a quad-core, the best choice, in my opinion, is Intel.
He said he's going with a Phenom, but if he doesn't feel married to AMD, he can switch.
Halt the fanboy wars please! If the person starting the thread and asking about a 9600 is going with a completely new motherboard (which he will), then I recommend waiting for April for the B3 Phenom's. In fact, I'm waiting till May for the 9750 @ 2.4 gigahertz.
If he doesn't have issues with Intel beyond CPU's then a Q6600 is a better choice than a B2 Phenom right now and probably a better choice than the B3 Phenom's.
Me, I want a 790 board and CrossfireX down the line with all AMD (getting a B3 9750 but will upgrade to 45nm Deneb 3.0 or 3.2 when they arrive). So I'm a fan but I hope I'm not biased against anything Intel except for their business practices during the last days of Netburst. Plus, I'm old fashioned, I like my pins on the CPU and prefer the ease of AMD stock coolers too.
Hell, a FX-62 gives Phenom a run in a lot of single threaded benchmarks, including games:
TC, you cherry pick way too much. That's why your advice should be taken with a grain of salt. It's as fanboyish as MrsBytch. The only thing that balances your advice is that you do recommend a Phenom for supported AM2 boards like my wife's 960G from ASUS (but we're going 790 and 780G anyways LOL).
How can you say an FX-62 beats a Phenom?
I'd say the Phenom 9750, when it arrives, will do well against the Q6600, but only in games that support 4 cores. Note how close the 9700 and Q6600 are:
Really, single threaded games, games that only support 2 cores and situations where a PC doesn't benefit from 4 cores are almost history. By the end of 2008, definitely by the summer of 2009, then all these old single threaded benchmarks will be gone and quad cores from both AMD and Intel will rule the gaming world.
Anyone not married to AMD with a huge budget should go with the fastest quad Intel has to offer. Anyone on a budget should consider a Phenom. Though a Wolfie 3.0 overclocked to 4.0 will rule in many games this year, I do not see it being viable by mid 2009. I guess it all depends on how often people upgrade their CPU's and motherboards.
MrsBytch you have some issues. What kind of person attacks another giving help? He didnt say anything about AMD sucking, nor does he appear to be a fanboi at all.
And Intels quads are faster. Unless you think Tom is a Intel fanboi as well...
I assumed that "there" was supposed to be "their".
If he wants to go with AMD because he has a brand preference, than that's fine, many people do. But if he thinks that any Phenom is faster than a Q6600, then he may want to do some research before he makes his purchase.
Assumption is the mother of all f***ups.
@op
The 9600 will be a hell of an upgrade.
@MrsBytch don't worry about the "factboy" he obiviously sees only the facts he wants to.
@TC "factboy" good job with the whole "flame thread" you started on MrsBytch, you should be proud of yourself and your rose colored glasses... FACT is the 9600 is a big upgrade from a single core Athlon 64.
cool
Prefer to go with AMD thou than intel. For me i just prefer them i know what i'm getting and know there products a lot better than intel's
What i meant from this was i Know AMD's products better than what i know intel's products. I know that intel are a lot better at the moment but which one of there processors is i don't know. With Amd's processors i knwo what i'm getting and what job it can do.
Well just read every comment on here.
some funny old laughing i did with the little arguments.
all i wanted to know was just how much of an upgrade it would be just out of Curiosity.
Thank you for the people that said about the single threaded apps and actually gave me info i asked.
Either way TC I think the OP will be rapped with his new Phenom. I have the BE ordered as well, but it's not for the processor alone, I'm looking at the spider and the new 3870 X2 to couple with the 3870 i've already got. 18,000 3D 06, can't be that bad. Got the BE 5000+ too and I'll tell you right here and now that, it does everything AMD said it can. Don't need to OC it, but have had one benchmark run at 3.0 and wow it posted significantly more. Believe me, Phenom or X2, you can't lose, especially at the current prices.
Where did I say that? Oh wait, that's right, I didn't say that.
What I did say is that the FX-62 gives the Phenom a run in many SINGLE THREADED BENCHMARKS including many games that we play.
This point is very valid. As others have pointed out, many of the benchmarks we use are multi-threaded. However, the reality is unless you playing a cutting edge game, it's probably single threaded.
In which case, if you had an FX-62 there would be very little incentive to buy a new Phenom for very little benefit, unless you are doing something very multi-threaded.
I also backed up my statement with benchmarks from several different games; but you managed to leave that out when you mis-quoted me.
But I must be an Intel fanboy for telling someone to stick with their fast AMD dual-core instead of upgrading.

I appreciate the help, it only cemented what I knew, but I figuredas a side build, for portable gaming, the wolfdale might be gerat in a sepearte build.
