Don't worry about it.  Hold it by the edges and get some 90% isopropyl alcohol and a Q-tip and clean it.  The finger prints won't hurt the CPU, you just don't want them there when it comes time to put on the thermal interface material (TIM).  You could even wait to clean it until you are ready to assemble your system.

lol relax. Just wipe it off with alcohol (as everyone else is saying lol), or even water will do the trick. Though alcohol will probably be the way to go, as it will totally evaporate because of its low density. Even if they were still on there when you added the thermal paste and what not, I highly doubt it will cause any problems... besides maybe making the thermal paste's job harder :P.

I would wait until you insert it into the socket and clamp it down to clean it thouroughly as everyone else said with alcohol and a Q tip.  Use sparingly to be sure to not allow excessive alcohol down in the socket.

Your cpu is fine, just dont handle it on the bottom side where the pin connector plate is.  That could be another story if you dirty up the surface on that side.

Nah, just use some fine grade water paper, soapy water and lap it
:D

Computer stuff can be surprisingly hardy and surprisingly fragile.
I ran a pc with a water leak for ~ a week while i was o/s. Came back to find a pool of water on the gfx card running down thru the pci slots eventually ending up on my carpet. (yes the pc was ON the whole time)

That was a year ago... everything is still fine :D

Yet a tiny bit of static or woteva and its KO'd

Wow, that must have been pure stuff...its not the water that conducts, but the impurities.

Added some anti corrosive/conductive stuff, and bob's your mothers brother.

The difficult part was trying to explain to my gf that the green fluid stain on my carped did NOT mean i was having 'relations' with my pc.

All I can say is......

Why would you get that excited about looking at a chip.......

Let me tell you although the E8400 maybe exciting, there are much better looking processors over time.

In my opinion, the best looking one was the AMD k6-III processor...

So next time folks leave it in the box, wait for the motherboard and then put it all together when its all there....

Do not touch processors, motherboards, video cards until its necessary... Nor give them a hug and kiss them good night...

Then get excited that your machine actually works....

The only downside is you have to load windows....

not true i regularry hug and kiss my GPU, even though it a piece of S***, it for pitty. lol.

but really just leave the stuff in the bix until you have at least the motherboard, ect. and hold it like a CD by the edges.

To me it sees like the CPU is one of the most durable components in a PC... I'm not saying you can't damage one by touching it... just saying that generally speaking it'll handle some abuse.

Uh, definitely not water.  when it evaporates, it'll leave a residue because it's usually not pure.  Use alcohol.
