Hello,
I built a PC a new weeks ago and was waiting for the new Q9450 to come out so I could buy one of them for my system. So far I have been using a Pentium dual core 1.8ghz. I am going to get this one ( http://www.overclockers.co.uk/show [...] subcat=793 ). My questions are;

1. Is the Q9450 worth the extra money over the Q6600?
2. Are there different versions like the Q6600 had a "Pro" version for example?
3. What are good coolers for this if I wanted to overclock it and what speeds am I likely to get from it?
4. I'm not going to be able to find it any cheaper than £234.99 am I?

Hell, you're lucky to have found it at all.

Q9450 is based on 45nm process. Should run cooler.
The Q6600 overclocks well. There is no "Pro" version.

The Q9450 is a nice fast processor.  Be aware, however, that many, myself included, received a chip that does show proper idle temperatures.  Some chips also have "stuck" or faulty DTS sensors.  While this hasn't really stopped me from overclocking it nearly 800Mhz its something you may want to be aware of.  Its a fast chip if you've got use for a Quad.

There are no "pro" versions of any processors, unless your talking about the old venerable pentium pro.
What do you use your computer for?

The main advantage of the newer Q9450 other then the running cooler is the support for the new SSE4.1 instruction set.
you will see a small increase in speed from Q6600 to the Q9450
but applications that support the new SSE4.1 will be much faster 20% or so

I'm use my computer for games and I multitask alot. I just ran 3D mark 06 and got 7207. I'm guessing the CPU has alot to do with this poor score.
My system specs are;

Pentium dual core 1.8ghz
2 GB RAM (800mhz CL4)
160 GB 7200 RPM hard drive
EVGA 8800 GTS
Asus Maximus Formula
Corsair 620 Watt power supply
Cheap case

I did not have enough money when I built it so I decided to use some old parts and upgrade when I have the money. This is what i'm hoping to have when I have enough money;

Quad Q450 overclocked to at least 3.2 GHZ
4 GB (1066mhz CL5) Corsair Dominator RAM
300 GB Western Digital VelociRaptor
EVGA 8800 GTS
Asus Maximus Formula
Corsair 620 Watt power supply
Antec Twelve Hundred Case

When i said "Pro" Version I was talking about this one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/show [...] =CP-172-IN

Aaaaah, that just looks like the e-tailer's marketing hype.  Looks like a vanilla Q6600 (and they only make 2 flavors...B3 and G0, I believe)...a nice chip.  You can get the Q9450 and take it to at least 3.4Ghz on the Maximus.

Oh 3.2 should be easy then.
When you buy custom heatsinks do they come with there own thermal paste or do you have to buy that as well? I have a cheap case ( http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spsho [...] at=0&page= ) will this fan ( http://www.overclockers.co.uk/show [...] =HS-024-CM ) fit in it? It will attach to my Asus Maximus Formula motherboard won't it?
That is a good fan ain't it?

My South and North Bridge run quite hot (hitting 50C with normal use). Would overclocking the CPU over heat these parts?

Overclocking will stress your chipsets and they for lead to a little more heat yes.. Over heat maybe not so much but, hey if you have your computer stuf in a desk cubby with the door closed and no holes any where for it to get fresh air then yes it will over heat. I acually need to get an after market chipset heatsink for mine because mine gets to hot with the stock that gigabyte puts on the ex38 dq6.

Well I have air flow for it but my room gets quite hot as it is small and there is a PC and a Xbox 360 running. Both throw out alot of heat so the room does get quite hot.

The Maximus Formula was designed to be overclocked hence all that copper you see.  Also, in the bios there's temp alarms for the CPU, northbridge, and southbridge.  You can set the limits and it'll say, "Hey you, what are you trying to do here, fry an egg?!" (not quite, but it will alarm) when its had too much.

Yes I'm not sure what is classed as too hot for the North and South bridge. I've had Vista crash on me twice in 2 - 3 weeks. Could the South and north bridge running at 52C cause this?

Probably yes, if you are overclocking enough to put stress on them they need more voltage leading to more heat leading to needing more cooling for them which is why the stock stuff is usualy not good enough for the hard core over clocker. People actually get water cooling for the chipset..

Well, I'm definitely not that hardcore.  I have no need to put such stress on the NB that I need liquid cooling.  If all that copper on the Asus mid-upper end boards isn't enough to keep the NB under control then I need to scale back my overclock.  I know that's not a very popular sentiment though.

Consider  a case with better airflow (may with side vent that you can put an 8cm or 12cm fan on).

Yeah i'm waiting for the Antec Twelve Hundred Case to come out. Untill I get that I won't overclock too much. Right now I have a "Midi tower case" will that fit any custom heatsink I buy?
