I got my PSU on my 590 to where the bottom fan is actually on the bottom. The bottom of the case has a vent, so it draws cool air at the very bottom. Now if that case was on carpet... heh, well that wouldn't be a good idea.

It looks like the 690 is built the same way.

I got bad hearing, but I can hear the fans on my 590 when I crack up all the fans I have installed, although it doesn't bother me much.

@The_Blood_Raven
I think that's not how it was meant with the CM RC-690.
It has thick rubber feet that lift it from the ground and an intake mesh below the PSU mount to suck in air. Somewhat like the Antec P182 multichamber design but without the chambers inside the case. You can mount it like you've drawn also but if you check the reviews you'll see nobody mounted it that way. :)

Your way might be quieter but it's somewhat of a NO-NO of case airflow/convection cooling. Removing cool air from the case is not such a good idea ... :)

EDIT : Grimmy beat me to it.

I'm torn between the 300 and the 690.

The 300 has no perforated wholes beneath the PSU mount.

I've just bought a Corsair HX 620w Modular PSU which has a 120mm intake fan on its bottom. I don't see it intaking much of anything if its pressed up against the floor of the case in the 300.

Is it acceptable to mount the PSU upside, essentially drawing air from elsewhere inside the case? That doesn't sound to attractive of an option though.

I'd snap the 690 up in a second if it didn't have the I/O panel on the top of the case. That's just plain ugly.

You can look at the manual for the 300 online and they suggest you mount the PSU upside down.

That's an easy 30 minute mod.
All you need is some plexiglass to mount in the holes the top panel leaves, a drill and 1 front bay cover to mount the panel to. :)
Or you could contact CM and ask for a front bay (they have a picture of it on their web page).

Yeah, I was just saying that it could be done that way.

If I buy the 300, I will drill my own holes I have decided. Looks like I will need to further add some rubber legs to raise it off the ground a little as it seems to sit flat with the ground at present thus rendering any holes I add useless.

If they only thought of this during their design process I think this case would be more widely adopted especially by those sitting on the fence and in a similar fashion if Coolmaster didn't ruin their 690 by inserting a front I/O panel on the top of the case, but rather where it should be in the front, it would be more appealing IMO.

Btw,

Wouldn't mounting the PSU upside down in the 300 draw hot air circulating from the near by GPU?

Wouldn't make much of a difference.

Found http://www.pcvonline.com/ , a store in town with the Antec 300 for $50 and the CM690 for $65. Went in to check them both out. The Antec 300 looked cheap and flimsy beside both the Antec Sonata III (that I am replacing) and pictures of the CM690. They would not open the box of the 690, so there was no direct comparison.

Since I did not like the real life look of the 300 I picked up the 690.

One thing you can't really tell from the pictures is that the bottom of front panel on the 690 looks like it has been pushed in. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Show [...] puter+Case It is a little strange and at first glance I thought it was broken. Other than that the case is great. It is bigger than the 590 or 300, and just barely fits in my desk, but the top ports can still be used.
