For a 'higher' overclock, take the PCIE frequency in BIOS from 100 to 110. See if you can get to 3.5 GHz. with that adjustment. If the 110 setting is 'stable' with a higher system BUS, try 115. I'm assumimg you have it locked down a 100. Be careful, your RAM is going to go kaput at 2.4v.

You can try moving the PCIE frequency in BIOS from 100 to 110-115. It may make no difference at all, but then again depends on the chipset and how it reacts. Maybe it'll make your 512 run better! 8) So if you loosen the timings the RAM you have should go close to 1066Mhz. or so. I thnk your 750i chipset is a little out of sink with all this adjustment, LOL.

So with the adjustment to 110 can you raise the FSB higher and with any better stability? At some point, you will crash while raising it to a higher value. My guess would be 118-119. Raising it off 100 may allow a higher FSB with stability hopefully.

Tonight I am swapping out an office computer. The girls in the office use it a lot to schedule appointments, create new and use current office forms, Print out, just general office stuff like surf the web all day and do no work. A little Spider solitaire. Check their Hotmail. That sort of stuff. You know really important work stuff.

I haven't messed with it in a while, but the computer is a Pentium 4 2.53 GHz., 533 MHz FSB CPU on an ECS MB, don't know the chipset right off hand and I just unplugged it. A gig of Kingston Value PC2100 to hold it up. The files have been accumilating since '02 I believe, 6 years worth. It's never crashed and I have not reloaded in 6 years. I installed a second 120MB WD IDE drive as a slave and between the master and slave the office is a 'hive' of twisted documents and information. Each document more important than the other. I have backed up both systems. The old Pentium 4 2.53 and also the 'new' AMD 64 socket 754 3700+ with Acronis True Image plus DVD copies of like 10 million very unarchived no less 'hived' important files. I have ran across the room several dozen times remembering stuff like, 'I thought I already copied and installed that file? Won't hurt to install it again."

Anyway, I may take the 'new' AMD 64 3700+ and swap it to an Antec 300 case. My wife wants to see if the case it is in now matches the new HP MFC I am going to hook to it. Matching components. Like I haven't washed my car in three years, who cares! Wish me luck. There will be questions when I fire this thing up at the front desk. Like where is the 'start' button.

^Nah we can use my old P4 EE for that. Crank it up to 3.6GHz and it will do that easily :kaola:

So you are using 2 x 2GB Corsair PC26400 4 CAS and not the ADATA listed in your config? Well, like you mentioned, when your are ramping up your system BUS and hit a wall you suspect your RAM. PC26400 top speed capable varys pretty widely. The best out there reach near PC28500, 1066 MHz. More likely your gonna get 900MHz or slightly better out of PC26400 stable. Anyway, I was just thinking some other RAM with a better rated top end speedwise might allow your FSB to be set higher without crashing (less stress). Like get the RAM data transfer speed (the inner working if the RAM) cranked up to 1066MHz. Forget downclocking the RAM's data transfer rate and having a matching ratio with the overclocked FSB. I think it just depends on your chipset which method would produce the higher, more stable OC. Anyway, I use 8 gigs of these Japanese 'Powerchip' DIMMS. 8 gigs work great on an x38 set at 1066MHz. with a 333MHz. FSB. Great temps, totally stable and a fast Quad 2.6GHz. Fast and stable with a high enough top end to make a difference as you clock your BUS beyond the processors default of 233MHz. Anyway...these 'Powerchip PC28000 DIMMs clock higher than PC26400 and are stable in doing so.

That's the MB they used. I looked it up thinking it was going to be under a hundred bucks. Nope. Would make your Q6600 spin to new highs. P35 has 1 16x PCIE slot. P45 has a 2.0 16x PCIE slot. Of course X38/48 have two 2.0 16x PCIE slots. I have a G35. My X38 is a better Oc'er.

Maybe your MB has poor voltage regulators, that's why it acts bad like it's not getting enough power. I know ASUS offers enhanced VR's on their ROG (Republic of gamers) series boards. The best OCing RAM I have run across is OCZ Platinum and some of the G. Skill. I have five gigs of this. It runs over 1000Mhz. easily.

Believe it or not, I can pair it up with this RAM and stillget 900MHz. at 4-4-4-12 on a P5B Deluxe 965. This great RAM for the price.

I've had generally good experience with Crucial Ballistic. I just bought 2 x 1GB PC6400 and have it stored away. Trying to add a 2 x 2GB set to it for later (when price comes down). I think I paid $19 with rebate for the 2 x 1 Gb kit.

I did have a problem with Crucial Ballistic PC4000 500MHz DIMMs I have owned for a long time. On my FX55, I ran the voltage up and left it ther (2.85-2.9v) to get it to 500Mhz. I left it there for a long while, like months. One DIMM burned up and I had to RMA. That's the FX 55 with unlocked multiplier. I blew a 7800GT out too. Ran the multiplier up and the video card failed. RAM was still there, but the video card headed south. LOL.

^Wow. I would expect a bit more from the Q6600 @ 3.2GHz since it has more threads and more cache. But this is...wow. Same score?????

If you dropped in an e8400 you would have your bus at 333MHz., CPU at 3.0GHz. and no heat issues you are experiencing with the Q6600. It's a thought. And the e8400 will OC to 3.6 on the stock fan. You could do some scaling then. :o

I thought P6N was your board. First time I've ever been wrong that I can recall :o . Yeah, it's troubling having a machine run hot all the time. Instability is even worse. Wish I had some better ideas for you to manage a better OC and a 15K 3D Mark. I get 15.7 completely stock on my main system. I probably wouldn't get far trying to OC 8 gigs of RAM anyway. I'm happy. Of course I have never played a game in my life  , but happiness does matter. :o How about the FX55 I'm using today. It's flexible. And it's the second fastest single core ever released. I keep killing my video cards and RAM everytime I 'experiment' with it. At least you haven't killed your stuff. + for you. - for me. :sol:

Nice work Grimmy. Enjoy your system. You are very good at what you do. I'm screwin' around with the idea of buying a cheap air brush and some stencils and 'touching up' some of my cases. Always something... :)

Note..hmmm, the MB supplies the voltage to the RAM. Maybe there is some built in resistors MSI put there to cause the voltage to require you to set it so high manually. I hope 2.6v don't cause the DIMMs to fail out. My Crucial Ballistic PC4000 brunt out when I set it to 2.85-2.9v. It took a while, months, but it gave out. I had to RMA to Crucial. Now I set the 4 x 512 at 2.75v and clock it at 430Mhz. or so. Anyway... :wahoo:

Good job Grimmy.
That was a hell of a lot of work to get it stable but it looks like it payed off in the end!

That is odd as hell that it has to warm up for 5min before booting :??:
