Thanks for the reply:)

Unfortunately, none of this has worked.

Here are my bios settings under Integrated Peripherals

-Onboard SATA Mode > AHCI
-Onboard ESATA Mode > AHCI (there is no SATA option, only AHCI, RAID, and IDE)

I looked under Disk Management as you suggested, but the drive doesn't show up. It isn't available for me to initialize.

I have a 1TB WD Caviar Black as my main drive partitioned into 3 partitions. All of these show up.

The drive I'm trying to put in the front bays is a Seagate 160 Mb drive. I had it temporarily installed as a main drive before installing the Western Digital, and it was working fine. I have made certain that I push it far enough into the front bay that it seats (as best that I can tell), and I've tried it in both of the front bays.

There didn't appear to be any loose SATA connections on the motherboard. However, I disconnected the CD/DVD SATA cable (which was working) and placed the SATA cable from one of the front bays into that port. This was unsuccessful though.

I have upgraded the power supply since I purchased the computer, so I traced the power cables back to make certain that those bays are receiving power, and that isn't an issue.

The only other thing is that I have Ubuntu installed on the drive that I'm trying to install in the front bay. I don't think that this should keep the drive from showing up in the bios during startup. Just to be sure that this wasn't the issue I temporarily booted from the installation disks for both Vista and Ubuntu. Neither of the partitioners on the disks could see the drive that I'm trying to get working.

The only things that I can think of that may be wrong are:

1) The drive I'm trying to put in the front bay has gone bad. (Unlikely since it was working 2 days ago)
2) The hot-swappable connectors in the front bays don't seat fully into the drive. (they feel like they're doing so however)
3) The SATA cables running to the front bays are defective (possible, but I tried both bays, so this would require 2 failed cables making it less likely)
4) There is some other software (or other) issue that I'm too ignorant to figure out (most likely I think)

I'm not certain what else to do. I appreciate your help:)

In the Device Manager, is there any Yellow marks?

Do you have the newest Intel Chipset Software Driver installed?

The Ubuntu setup on the drive should not affect the drive being detected by the system.
Instead, the drive just won't be assigned a drive letter even though you should be able to see it using the Computer Management Console.

When you used the front bay, did you insert the drive while Windows is running or did you Boot the system with the drive in the bay?

As for the backplain connectors to the front bay, a way to test to see if they might be defective would be to unplug one of the backplane connectors from the motherboard, then make sure you have an available SATA power connector and a spare SATA cable. Connect both the cables to the drive, then plug the other end of the SATA cable to the same connector from which you disconnected the backplane cable to the front bay. Make sure the drive is not going to short out against anything, then boot your system and see if the drive shows up in the Computer Management Console.

If this works, then either the SATA Backplane connector or the backplane cables may be defective.

Should all else fail, then this would lead me to believe that the drive may be defective or there may be some other problem.

If the drive does work, then if you have room in the top drive cage, you could install the Seagate drive there as you won't need to be bothered with using the backplanes.

- Other than what I have outlined here, I can't think of anything else which may be causing the problem you are having with your drive.

Good Luck

There are no yellow marks in Device Manager.

I do have the Intel Chipset Driver installed, but it was the one of off the Gateway site. I updated with the link that you gave, although I'm not certain how to check to see if it successfully updated. The installer did say that the update was successful, but it didn't restart or have any instructions once I manually restarted as the "read me" file said that it would. It also didn't affect my problem. How can I locate the driver version in Vista?

I inserted the drive in the front bay and booted, and I also attempted to do it with windows running. It is not recognized either way. I can't tell if the drive spins up or not while in the front bay due to the ambient noise.

The drive functions when attached to another SATA cable, and other devices work when plugged into the same motherboard port as the backplain connectors.

I saw one of your earlier posts mentioning poor airflow around the hd area in this case, and I agree with that. I had wanted to install a hd cooler in the empty upper slot near my main drive. Unfortunately, it looks like that bay may be the only one available for another drive without going to an external enclosure.

I suppose that from a hardware perspective, it must be the SATA cable/backplain connector combo that runs from the front bays to the motherboard. The fact that neither of the bays function however led me to believe that there might be a software issue.

Reply to Atomic864

Well, I suppose you could remove the entire back plate containing the driveplane from the drive cage. This would leave the back of the drive cage open and connect the drive directly without the need for the drive plain.

The only problem with this is you would not be able to Hot Swap any drives any more.

-

With the back plate off the drive cage, this would also enable you to visually check out the connectors and see how they compare to the connectors on the drive. Maybe there is a mismatch between the two?

As to the drivers, you don't need to worry cause it's a complete package which will install the correct drivers for your system.

At least you were able to ascertain that the drive does work.

Someone above mentioned if anyone's Gateway FX6800-01e came with the ATI HD4850 1GB card. To my surprise, mine did. I took it out to replace with two NVIDIA cards, then noticed 1024mb on the label. To be sure, I re-installed it and sure enough in system properties it was 1024mb dedicated video memory. My Gateway box definitely says 512mb :)

Also, if you want the supposedly max memory of 12gb, I got mine here...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001MWRUZ8

$90 for (3) 2gb sticks = 6gb

Be sure to add (2) to your cart for the total 12gb = $180!!!

I believe this is cheaper than Crucial or any local retailer. Also it's the highest speed compatible memory (PC3-12800), and name-brand OCZ. Take care!

First of all i would like to thanks you Renegade_warrior for all the help provided we the FX6800. I have it myself. 1st month the motherboard blew up lol. I had about 4 bluescreen per day. Send it back got a new 1. I have the awesome vista home premieu 64 bit os (kidding not awesome). I followed what you said for upgrading the bios and it worked perfectly for me!

Dont know if it happens to you guys but, i get a lot of crashes while playing games. I turned on the hidden admin and still get crashes. The screen turn black and no sounds or annoying sounds coming out. If im lucky it will come back by itself but, most of the time i need to reboot the computer. I play counter-strike (i know that game isnt compatible with vista) and i recently bought The last remnant and that 1 is compatible with vista and it doesnt the same thing.

I installed XP on my desktop but cant find the driver for our motherboard and the only thing the online service is telling me is that im out of warranty lol.

Thx again Renegade

Try running the Windows 7 RC

I'm Running Vista-64 Ultimate and Windows 7 Ultimate-64 (RC) Dual booting.

So far, Windows 7 is running great and I've got most of my programs installed in Win7. No problems so far what so ever.

I even installed the XP Mode on which I run NeatWorks which includes MS SQL Server.

Im waiting until the release of win7 i gonna buy the ultimate edition or what ever needed lol. I gonna need to install it on a few computers. So there is no need for me to install the beta right now lol. As i said i flashed the bios and its working fine now didnt got any trouble yesterday with counter-strike source! I will try my other games later today! :) Right now im looking over internet to find out which memory ill buy! I know you said which 1 you've got but i like reading a lot on what i buy. What i didnt do for my desktop because if i knew they were ACER now i wouldnt bought it because i had a lot of problem with acer in the past (no customer service).

Reply to x3mz

Customer service is just about non-existent and what little they do provide, it's like they don't know their Head from their Arse! They can't even be bothered to update the drivers on their website.

As for Windows 7, I'm running the Release candidate and it appears Rock Solid.

The way I look at it is this is giving me the experience I need to be prepared for when Windows 7 gets released as I'll no doubt be working on Windows 7 systems and doing installations for others.

This way, I'll know what to expect and I'll have found all the little shortcuts to doing stuff that you otherwise might not be aware of.

As for memory, I'll eventually upgrade my my system to 24 GB and I'll do a bit more research before purchasing. I'll also be building a new system next year and I'll go with the best I can get for what ever parts I need.

Reply to Renegade_Warrior

So where did you get the drivers for the motherboard for windows 7?

Reply to x3mz

For Vista, I got them from their respective sites.

Audio - RealTek website
HDMI Audio - RealTek website
The X-Fi MB - I used what came with the system
Intel Chipset - The lastest driver is available from Softpedia.com - the Drivers tab - right column
Intel Matrix Storage Manager - Intel
Video Card - http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx (ATI Website)

All other drivers are installed by the system.

-

For Windows 7 the system installs all the correct drivers without the need to hunt them down.
The Intel Matrix Storage Manager is the only one you have to download and install separately.

If you want the Catalyst drivers, then you'll need to download and install them manually

As for the Creative X-Fi MB, it won't install in Windows 7 as for some reason it can't detect the chipset and Creative hasn't released a Windows 7 version of X-Fi MB yet. Even their X-Fi beta drivers won't work for this one yet.

ATI Catalyst 9.5 is out now and this fixes an issue in Windows 7.

In previous version, the Catalyst Control Center would not work, but this has been fixed in v9.5

Not sure if this was answered, But download the files and open a command prompt in administrator mode then run the file flash.bat - upgrade will install

Reply to EvilTree

There is a bit more to upgrading the BIOS than just running the flash.bat in Administrator mode with the FX6800 systems or you'll end up with errors or other problems.

-

First off make sure your system is clean, you can run MalwareByte's Anti-Malware, then SpyBot-Search & Destroy 1.6.2 (without the tea timer). Both of these programs should clear out most any parasites you MIGHT have on your system.

- Updating BIOS

The most important thing is to login to windows using an Administrator account and to disable UAC (user account control).

After that, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and any other resident protection programs.

The Bios Zip file - make sure all the files are extracted to the same directory such as C:\BIOS or some such.

Close any programs which may be running.

Start > Run

Browse to the folder where you extracted the files from the BIOS zip file and select Flash.bat

- NOTE: If you can't see the file extensions, then you need to do this:

Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab > Scroll down to Hidden files and folders

- Select "Show hidden files and folders"

- The next two items should be selected also.

You should be able to see the file extensions now.

Click OK and the BIOS should update successfully.

The UAC is what causes most of the problems with the BIOS update. But other programs can interfere too.

Once you have successfully updated the BIOS, then you can re-enable the UAC and you should be all set.

Renegade_Warrior wrote :

Sorry 'bout that.

Here Are The Two Methods For Updating Your BIOS

-

All the files you extracted from the Zipfile need to be in the same directory, especially the driver files or it won't work.
(preferably in directory off the Root of the drive such as C:\Update or some such)

Next, not knowing if you have the original or the fixed version, using Notepad or your favorite text editor, open the file flash.bat

The only line you should see in the file is AFUWIN.EXE 842P161G.ROM /p /b /x /L2 /REBOOT

-

To be on the safe side, disconnect your system from your network or broadband modem to isolate it.

Then disable your Anti-Virus program and make sure nothing else is running in the background.
(This is to make sure that nothing interferes with the Flashing of your BIOS) as a Corrupt BIOS will ruin the system.

Then select Start > Run and browse to the folder where the files are and select flash.bat - then hit Open.

It should work.

DO NOT Touch anything until it finishes.

-

The other method would be to run AFUWIN.EXE in Windows Mode.

Same as before, all the files will need to be in the same directory.

Make sure your system is disconnected, the Anti-Virus is disabled, then
select Start > Run and browse to the folder where the files are and select AFUWIN.EXE Then hit - Open

You will see a Dialog Window pop up with three tabs, Select the Setup tab.

Under Block Options, you'll want to select the following.

- Program All Blocks
- Boot Block

Under CMOS Options Select - Load ROM File's Optimal

Under Miscellaneous Select

- Do Not Check ROM ID
- Restart After Programming

Next Click Open and select the ROM file - 842P161G.ROM

Click the Flash button and let it do it's job.

DO NOT Touch anything until it finishes.

- I hope this helps

I too, would like to give my thanks to Renegade_Warrior. I have a fx 6800-11 that uses the same mobo and I was baffled about how to do the bios update until I saw this thread. I just wonder what gateway was thinking when they disabled the turboboost function in the first place...

Reply to bigstark

absolutely. Turn off the uac and use the flash.bat file no checksum no driver error. No problem. This computer has acted like absolute garbage from the beginning. Geek squad has been completely useless. But the day I found this forum and flashed this new bios It has acted like an entirely new computer. Thanks Renegade your a lifesaver. I am more excited today than I was the day I bought this silly piece. I was getting bluecreens and my bluetooth mouse and keyboard have never worked right on this computer. just one thing after the next. Now it actually acts like its gonna be worth it after all. Minus the 200 geeksquad rip.

I have to thank you renegade. You've been very helpfull to every one :). And I have one quick question. I'm planning on switching off my mobo for one that isn't from gateway. (probably ASUS Rampage II GENE, cheap and amazing) but heard on other threads that the cpu fan doesn't fit on other borads, is this true??

Does anyone Know if this update will work for the acer m7720 since it comes with the (as i hear) same motherboard as the fx6800?
Or does there exist some kind of a cracked or unoffciall bios update that unlocks all the features on the motherboard?
The bios vers that comes with this computer REEEAAAAHEELY sucks.. No support no manuals, no anything

As far as I can tell fro what I've found online, it seems to be the same motherboard.

Acer uses this MB for their Acer brand and their Gateway and Packard Bell brands.

The only real way to find out would be to open the case and compare the motherboard with pictures found online of the FX6800 motherboard.

As for MB model number, it seems that Acer may have used different model designations for the USA and the European Motherboards.

But from what I have found and read online, it does appear to be the same.

Please verify against the pictures for 100% certainty as I've not had the chance to examine an m7720 for verification yet.

I wish I had known of this thread previously as I would have been able to offer assistance to everyone having trouble with this BIOS update.

Anyone who has previously downloaded the new BIOS and is having problems with trying to update their system should Download a NEW copy of the BIOS from Gateway and run the Flash utility again.

There should be no problems as Gateway FIXED the problem without telling anyone and without making any notes of it on the support page.

When the New BIOS was first uploaded, a Mistake was made is the flash batch file for flashing the system.

The original file reads as follows: AFUWIN.EXE 842P161G.ROM /p /b /c /L2 /REBOOT

/P - Program main BIOS image
/B - Program Boot Block
/C - Destroy CMOS checksum (Clear nVRAM)
L2: Load optimal from ROM file

A New BIOS with a FIXED Flash.bat file was later uploaded with the Same Time Stamp.

The New file reads as: AFUWIN.EXE 842P161G.ROM /p /b /x /L2 /REBOOT

/P - Program main BIOS image
/B - Program Boot Block
/X - Don't Check ROM ID
L2: Load optimal from ROM file

What happened here was that Acer changed the BIOS Naming convention of the BIOS from the Factory Default 842PxxxG to AMI R01-A04

The ROM ID Error everyone has been getting is because of the name convention change in the BIOS.

If you would like to save the Old BIOS, you can do this using the Flash utility which can be run without the flash.bat file. Instead, it'll open a program window allowing you to select which options (switches) you need to run.

As for the Motherboard, so far, it seems that Acer has No intention of releasing any information on it as they are trying to keep it to themselves.

They have not released any Manuals for the Motherboard. Tech support is just about clueless and what with the company merger, it seems nobody really knows what is what.

Here are the actual flash codes for using the Afuwin.exe utility.

Hi all,
I changed the Bios from Acer M7720 to that from Gateway FX6800 on my M7720 computer with Vista 64 SP2.
It worked, now my compi is shown as FX6800 and the bootmenue is now F10 instead F12. But nothing more has changed. Still I cant boot from my Buffalo USB stick, which boots on nearly any other computer with USB bootability in Bios, I have founded this is 2005, see the large thread on cd 911 forum about USB boot. So, all the Bios AMI R01-A04 (February 2009 Gateway) or
AMI R01-A02 (December 2008 Acer) have very limitated USB bootability and nearly nothing can be set in those Bioses,
nice to hear from you,

Dietmar

EDIT: FAT32 and NTFS does not work, but with FAT16 I succeed to boot from USB Buffalo Stick to XP on the Acer M7720 computer.
AMI R01-A02 nor AMI R01-A04 allows you to boot from FAT32 from removable USB device, so I hope that there will be soon an Bios update on the Acer homepage.

Thank You for the confirmation that the m7720 uses the same motherboard as the FX6800.

I was fairly certain that they were the same, but without first hand comparison of the motherboards or confirmation from someone else, I could not be 100% certain.

Here is a reference I found at Intel. It seems to indicate that it will speed up the processors even when more than one is running....only just more so with 1 processor.

There is a simplistic short video about the technology as well.

I did finally get this bios upgrade to work correctly. I followed a couple of suggestions from this post.

First I followed this process as instructed by Renegade_Warrior :

Downloaded the Bios upgrade and made sure all the files were in the same directory.

Right clicked on AFUWIN and selected run as administator as instructed by rdk2009

On restart I had to manually go into boot options and reselect my primary boot drive. Before I did that I booted to a blank screen so this information was somehow erased. After that the computer restarted normally but the system hade to automatically reinstall the I/O drivers. This happened automatically with no effort on my part. The bios showed the correct update and a CPU speed of 2.79 up from 2.67. I never did get a checksum error as many have stated. But did have to reset my primary bootdrive info.

Thanks to all!

I just bought the Gateway FX 6800-01e yesterday. I wiped out the existing OS and installed vista ultimate 64bit version. I installed network driver and then video driver. I was very pleased to see the Windows Experience Index Score marked 5.9 in all areas. However, the temperature masured by SpeedFan utility on Temp1 is over 100C (212F) . Are you guys aware of this or I am the only one who has this issue? This high temperature will surely make the system unstable.

Thank you in advance,

The FX6800 case is not very well ventilated. :(

I removed the rear fan - cut out the (fan) vent holes and mounted a server quality fan in place of the old fan, then added a circular chrome fan grill to the back. The fan is about twice as thick as thick stock fan.

Also added another fan to the front of the case and a couple of other fans.

The door to the Hot swap bay I keep open for more airflow.

For a while now, I have seriously been considering switching to water cooling for my system. But I don't know if I want to do it with this system or with the next system which I will be building next year.

BTW...

The system runs even better with Windows 7 :)

I followed your instruction along with Renegate Warriors, the bios was upgraded like a charm.

Next task would be solving the cooling problem. My CPU gets hot like 100C.

Thanks,

When you download windows 7, it has a setup program. You can run it to install.

Just make sure you do not get Windows 7 from a Torrent as you stand a good chance of getting a load of pre-installed malware with it.

If you get a TechNet Plus license, you can get Windows 7 RTM (no expiration) along with other software and access to TechNet resources.

Code TMSAM10 still works. Used it last week and got $86.00 off (not counting tax)

I plan to use TechNet to update my skills while my daughter is in school this year.

I installed Vista Ultimate 64bit version, and it works very nice. Seeing 5.9 Windows Index Base Score in all areas is quite nice.

I've downloaded Windows 7 yesterday after reading your experience with Windows 7, but I am a bit hesitated in installing it.

It didn't offer upgrade from Vista, so basically I need to wipe out Vista and to install Windows 7. This makes me a bit nervous.

What is your suggestion? Is it worth to go that direction from Vista Ultimate?

Thank you,

Do a Clean install.

Just make sure you back up your system first so you can restore it in case.

-

The way I did it was a Dual-Boot setup and I found that Windows 7 is much more stable than Vista ever was. Now 'm getting ready to wipe out my original Vista Partition and I'm gonna install the Windows 7 RTM on it.

If I recall correctly, the functionality of the speedboost is dependent on the temp of your processor. So basically, if you're not getting any more of a boost, then you might need more cooling/ventilation.

Either that or not knowing how well you may be with systems, maybe you might have something running in the background dragging the system down?

I wish I saw this post before trying the Bios Update on my new Gateway 6800FX-e01.

I think I made a mistake of checking all the Bios update and somehow my new BiOS no longer shows the Serial Number.

Is it the NVRAM that I messed up by checking it? Did it write over teh original Serial Number info?

The computer runs fine but no serial number anymore whereas the original 842P091G BIOS from the factory did show it.

The serial no longer shows up in the BIOS after I updated the BIOS.

Anyone know how to get this back to showing a serial number?

Any tips for a newbie?

Thanks so much!

Reply to mpdznr

I wasn't aware of it. Where do you see the Serial Number? Is this number found in the BIOS setting where you go by entering F2?
I will check mine, let you know what happened.

Reply to udaman

Yes It is under F2 and then Product Information. Look for System Serial Number. Is it blank on yours after teh BIOS update flash? Let me know. I thought I zapped it when I did the update by checking NVRAM but I could be wrong and it could be just that way for everyone???

Reply to mpdznr

I checked that. Mine is also blank.

Reply to udaman

Just checked my BIOS after having seen this morning's reply and the serial number IS present in my BIOS and I am running the most current BIOS which Gateway (Acer) has released publicly.

I'm not sure how one would go about programming the serial number into the BIOS

But I did try searching Google for awhile before replying back here. Either there is a seperate program used for this or a hidden switch we aren't aware of with the BIOS update program.

The same serial number should also be on the motherboard itself and on the case of your system.

- But as it is, I would not rely on Gateway (Acer) for anything as they are terrible with providing any updates at all and their support isn't worth the effort either.

This is my first and last Gateway (Acer) system.

I originally thought there would be a software program that woud need to access the system serial number but after asking around and checking the software I use, none of them would need to access the serial for the system so I guess this wouldn't pose a real problem even if it's missing. The only number one of my software vendors, who's tight on licensing, would need is the unique MAC address.

So I guess Renegade_Warrior checked all the right boxes during the BIOS update. I think the first time I flashed it I did it right but then decided to do it again thinking I missed a few boxes and then I think I checked program NVRAM. That's my guess. I am a bit disappointed that Gateway had no instructions with their BIOS update. It's like leaving a nuke button unlocked without special precautions. They need to understand that a lot of users aren't that sophisticated and should take steps to prevent us from doing something wrong.

I was guessing maybe the switch would be taking out the CMOS battery and putting it back in to reset it? Maybe, maybe not. Maybe it won't work and would jsut erase BIOS info like time and date? I figure I better not mess with it for now.

MY Asset Tag and System Serial field are blank from the BIOS Product Information and from techs I talk to there is no easy way to recover it and they feel, no real need to. For now I feel a bit better but I would hate it if one day something needed to access it for some reason.

Yeah since I bought mine as a Reconditioned computer, Gateway would provide no support or answers and refered me to a conpamny that resells reconditioned FX 6800's. They at least tried to give me an answer and their answer was there was no easy way or need to recover the system serial.

Is my CPU burning? As you see in the screenshot, SpeedFan shows the CPU temperature is above 116 Celsius and the processor fan runs at 1377 rpm. With this temperature, I can boil the water. Is this normal? What is your machine's temperature? I added an extra 80inch fan, and it helped a bit but not much. I am worried. :(

Mine is reading Temp1: 96 degrees Celcius with Fan1 at 1366 RPM.

Fan 2: 720 RPM Temp2: 42C

Not for the faint of heart but I was able to install the Vista 32 bit Intel Network Card drivers successfully and get connectivity. Then I installed the 32 bit ATI Radeon driver successfully. Things seem to be running smoothly but I am not sure what driver's I might be missing so there may be problems in the future.

I only have the standard 3G anyway but yeah, I get that you wouldn't be able to go beyond 4G on a 32 bit machine.

BTW, Gateway made it clear this voids the warranty.

Thanks

Where did you find the network driver at, i'm ib the same situation with no drivers due to changeing to 32 bit Vista

Reply to Anonymous

You can go to gateway.com support site and get the network driver for FX 6800.

Reply to udaman

Gateway (Acer) does not supply the latest drivers for their systems.

The network adapter is listed as Intel(R) 82567LF-2 Gigabit Network Connection

Here is a link for the driver download page on the Intel website

Should I be concerned that Speedfan's Temp1 shows Temp1: 100C on my Gateway FX6800-01e? It's a bit scary since I don't know if there's going to be a meltdown. Is that the CPU or?
