Actually that's the bottom part of the 1156 socket itself. The 1156 back plate / adapter bracket fits around and over that part of the underside of the bracket. You can see the installation instuctions (PDF) on the
Xigmatek.com website
--> A case switch. And a very sneaky problem solved. Good job.
Good to know about the back plate and that the adapter bracket will work. The advantage of going through all of those trouble shooting steps is that I now know that it's not THAT big a hassle to remove the motherboard. I found the fussiest part was cleaning off the old thermal compound.
Also, the ZEROTherm Core 92 is back in stock so that is an easier option. I'm not going to worry about the cooler at this point though. I need to install the OS and do a lot of testing before I decide how much over clocking I want to do and, therefor, how serious a cooler I think I need.
Everything was a breeze after rectifying the reset button problem. Win 7 (64 bit) installed in about 20 minutes. I used Windows Easy Transfer to restore settings and restored other stuff from one of several backups I made. That was only on my system partition. The rest of the data was pretty well segregated so it remained on my two internal drives.
Thanks. I took a couple of shake down flights with Condor. It was an incredible difference. My frame rate went from between 6 and 18 to about 150! The great thing is that it flies much more docilely and controllably than before. I cranked the graphic settings up as far as they will go and still got a frame rate of 95 to 100.
Sometime I want to talk to you about FSX. I used it a bit in the past a few times with big gaps in between. My brother is an active pilot, now flying sailplanes and keeps turning me back onto flight simulators. One of my favorites was Flight Assignment ATP because it was very goal oriented. I love Condor for the same reason. The online races are great. I'm hoping my placement will be better with my new hardware. I think my realtime often slowed down radically but it remains to be seen if that is really true.
I won't this evening--probably tomorrow. It takes quite a while to install since I install scenery for the entire planet. Have you ever tried it? It is supposed to have the best flight model of any desktop flight simulator. They actually use it in some real flight simulators and there is an FAA approved version for that.
I've seen an earlier version being run about 3 years ago, and after reading several reviews, I had intended to purchase the software, but never followed up, as I was satisfied with FSX, which is what my pilot buddies are running. Still, I'm open to giving it a try, even if I don't know anyone else who can relate.
The only add-ons I have are Goodway Flight Planner for route planning and automatically adding waypoints to the FMS. I use the X-IvAp plugin (It's IvAp for FSX) to use IVAO ATC facilities. I've also used the VATSIM plugin a bit. You can login to the IVAO and VATSIM servers with Goodway too, which will show you traffic, but other utilities are much better for observing traffic. I used to use IvAe, which is very feature rich, but there was a glitch when there was some kind of server change, so I started using Dolomynum which is fast and light and works on both networks. I'll probably try IvAe again with my new computer because I shouldn't have the performance issues I was having with the old Dell.
I'll give you more info as I think of it.
By the way, I had forgotten that X-Plane doesn't have any registry entries so I was able to fire it right up with the new computer. I went from 20 fps (it won't let you go below that--it just slows down and scenery gets foggy) to about 95 fps! I need to dump my old preferences though because some stuff was screwing up. This is common with X-Plane and something that people get pissed about. If you upgrade or get new hardware, you would be best to dump your old preferences. There is also a new version available so I'll install that, then clear out my old preferences before firing X-Plane up again.
Please let me know if you have more questions.
What kind of activities did you do with FSX? I assume you are a real world pilot. I see you are a sailor too. I sailed boats when I was younger, then switched to windsurfing over 20 years ago.
