The fact that the hardware would be in France while most of the traffic is probably in North America might be questionable, but I don't care BOM being a French company, I don't believe they are any worst (or better) than any other.
BTW, I'm a French Canadian, but don't mind the Frenchmen jokes, even here in Quebec we make fun of them

Well, here's my take on it. The French ruled Vietnam for forty years before the war there broke out. They immediately surrendered. The Vietnamese own Newegg. So much for the French imperialist regime using Newegg ad revenue for another day. Now, Justin has the old Tom's Marina Del Ray office He shares with a group of fine Tom's review chicks from the area. And French chicks are planning to see their N. Amerian offices soon. Oh-la-la. Justin should read this and prepare for the unforgettable times He will share with the French.

I do have have HIGH hopes for these guys/girls and wish them some good luck. I do believe They will get the hang of it. This forum is on an international site and must cater to many different cultures, getting it all right will probably never happen.... But, these guys are on the right track with many of their choices. AS they say things Will get changed/adjusted as necessary.
badge wrote : Yeah, you have 520 points= Tom's Scout. You will be so designated in due time. They haven't pressed the Total button on the point calculator yet.
Thanks for the help, Badge.

Wait..what??? If talking about the manufactured electronics (motherboards, etc), would it not be Taiwan (gigabyte,ASUS,etc)?

Right, Newegg is Taiwanese owned. But that has nothing to do with the immediate French surrender of Vietnam when the fighting started. Newegg is selling billions with a B without knowlege of France occupying their neighbor's country and immediate surrender when the fighting started. I don't know. I hope Newegg realizes this. This all may lead to Tom's being returned to America who Freed France on D Day 8) I should have been a world history teacher. Not.

That's what I'm talkin' 'bout fooseball88. This is not good. War will break out because our server is in the hands of France. Well, their surrender is immenent if it does.

We had a Vietnamese patient in our office a few years ago. Her name was Bich Phoeuck. True.
Speaking of war/military
Even Google(<=clicky) thinks the French never won a war.

Actually, they won their revolution war ... but it was against themselves, so they also lost it
.

haha! Terrific observation. The French aren't very good at numbers either.

They might not be good traders, but they aren't bad with numbers (or at least used to be); many great mathematicians were French:
At to go back to trading, I'm not sure the Louisiana deal is much better than the one for Alaska which would mean the Russians aren't good at numbers either...

France is dirty too! Ever been there? Yuck! shite everywhere
On another note..... Do we really expect these guys to change the things e want them too, especially when we dog them out?
^lol, they won't change it. But it makes me feel better to complain about this.
Any ways, badge,et al, I think we should make this thread go for like 15 pages.
LOL! I HATE Aimbots/cheaters

Sorry to digress from the off-post ramblings, but I would like to post my thoughts on the original subject since this seems to be the primary thread for it.
I thought the objective of the forum was to provide the person seeking help or information with some measure of the reliability of the responses received and to encourage readers with some expertise or information to respond.
With regard to former:
1. How is the reliability index (assigned name) improved by giving points to the poster who is the one lacking the requisite information? Why does the poster receive approximately 4 times the points of each respondent who presumably has the better knowledge?
2. How is the reliability improved by apparently giving only a fraction of a point for pre-transition posts versus 4 points for post-transition posts? Rather this misleads the reader by apparently downgrading the value of the response.
With regard to the latter:
1. How does it encourage readers to provide responses when, after several years of faithful service they are informed that THG’s ranking of their expertise has been downgraded?
2. I only take the time to respond in hopes that I am helping someone – that they will value the information I provide. Downgrading me to “newbie” after over 700 posts does not improve my expectation of having my opinions valued.
Further I think the rating system should put less emphasis or value on opening threads over posting responses. I understand you are trying to incentive this but I don’t believe the openers of threads require incentives. If they have a real question, getting an answer is or should be a much larger incentive than any points received. With regard to discussion type threads, I have seen very few good ones. And the good ones come from people who have a real interest in a topic or discussion and are not motivated by getting points for it.
On the other hand, I do see that offering points starting threads may motivate some less conscientious readers to post just to get the extra points. I am not sure how the “selecting a best answer” works, but if it means the original poster gets to pick the best response and gets even more points, this exacerbates the problem. I have seen the evidence of readers making a spat of innocuous posts, consuming the time of serious readers while obviously just trying to boost their own ratings. Now what are the incentives provided them. They can create one new question and pick a best answer, getting 40 points, which is worth as much as 10 posts - and in the process consume the time and attention of people who think they are helping someone with a legitimate question.
^ +1...
I'm not one for posting new threads or topics. I much rather scan through and provide my feedback where I feel my knowledge can help. I haven't come a cross to many times where I need to ask for feedback but the times I have... I taken pride in the feedback I received for the "faithful posters"...
I've come across one individual I've helped (tried to at least) in the New Build forum that has like 200 post but 500 points because he asked the same question in about 6 to 7 different post. Someone gives him a good answer and he says great, than I see him posting the same question in a new thread that was answered by everyone in his past thread. (For those of us who visit that section often... I bet you can guess who I'm talking about...
) He is going to be listed as "Scout" and he is still trying to learn how to do his FIRST build. Now, if a "NEWBIE" ask a question and he responds, they'll think he knows a lot because of his ranking, when actually he doesn't know anymore then they do. We should get more points for responses than post... If you look at everyone on this thread... I would say that majority if not all of us don't post a new thread very often or at all. We are giving the answers to try and help someone out or give them direction. I know I haven't been around on this forum as long as most of you... but do take my feedback I provide seriously like the rest of you... Maybe one day (10+ years from now with the new point system) I might be a Tom's Regular... or I could just have more fiber in my diet... I'm not sure which though!!
I have held off on this for a while, letting the changes soak in.
First off, "wannabe" is derogatory and has no place in a site that wants to attract people and give a friendly impression.
Secondly, the new method as listed in the ranking post is useless. Here is why:
"Question"-type thread opening: 15
How many questions do you expect people to ask? The only people that ask a lot of questions are morons who can't read all the information already available. So, you are rewarding people for being morons. Really, have you ever seen someone who has 3 or 4 knowledgeable people helping them just abandon the thread and ask a new question on a new thread in the same section? It's very annoying.
"Discussion" or "Poll"-type thread opening: 10
Again, how many of these do you think someone will make? How many will they make before the community catches on and ignores them?
Answering a thread or commenting a news article: 4
Ah, the only part that will really contribute to anyones score, finally.... oh wait, this is just a post count X4....
Selecting a "best answer" : 25
Only if you happened to check that box when you made your post. And since you were clueless to start, how will you really know which answer was best? What if you change your mind? I'm a pretty helpful guy, not as experienced as Badge perhaps, but I sometimes come up with good answers. I had almost 6000 posts before the wipe. How many "Best answers" did I have to my credit? Maybe two or three. Not exactly inspiring huh? Do you see that as motivation? I don't.
Being selected as the "best answer" : 40
Yeah as above.
So really we had this massive post count wipe, followed by a new system that rewards post counts.
Zenthar has the right idea, or at least a better one.
Finally, the feedback question was not "shall we erase any evidence of hard work by our senior forum members and make them start over?" I would not have voted for that.
Oh, and +4
+1 for the above 2 posts. You guys brought it back on topic
. Now how shall we go off topic again?

lol! I just found out what "wannabe" is in French! It's "aspirant"! Could this be the reason for the "wannabe"?
Definition for "Aspirant": http://www.google.com/search?clien [...] gle+Search
Quote : aspirant:an ambitious and aspiring young person; "a lofty aspirant"; "two executive hopefuls joined the firm"; "the audience was full of Madonna wannabes"
Translated by: http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_txt
The translation has a different meaning/connotation in French doesn't it?

I agree that the point system seems completely backwards. Awarding a ton of points for starting a thread is ridiculous. I've only ever started a thread once and that one became a sticky. I frequently post trying to help optimize a build or troubleshoot problems. If I have a PC problem I am quite good at using Google, so I don't have any reason to post a question here. I think we should get more points for trying to help someone than starting a random post. It looks like I'll be a "Tom's Scout" forever at this rate, even though I feel I'm often able to assist others. 4 points for every post trying to help someone sure don't add up very fast.
I agree with RJ and Prox, take a supersoaker filled with gas and an extended lenght lighter, hop on a bicycle ride by and reduce the current member rankings point system to a pile of smoldering toilet sausage. (French guy gets hot uner his nylons) Hey. Hey. Relax, put that down man....
Very good observations by RJ and Prox. Our administrator should consider what has been pointed out here. I feel sorry for our admin at this point. All this may be completely out of his hands (puts bicycle back in garage).
Should this always be about helping an under aged mind brat that continually over rates himself and explicitly ignores policy.......
well should it?
Anyway Sometimes I think just sharing of the informmation is sufficient. Discussions and even sometimes flamewars (at least they are fun). Many times new guys just hit and run most of the time not even completing their initial inquire ................................................................ My point is why dont people post more threads that are more guides, Stickies, Some of their own builds (instead of saying f* off to newbies), Show acrticles exaples, etc..etc..etc..
Stupid french joke:
A frenchman walks into a bar, smiles at the landlord and orders a glass of wine. The frenchie looks about and sees a camel sitting at the bar as well.
The frenchie asks the landlord, "What is that dirty camel doing in here?"
The Landlord pulls a cricket bat out from behind the bar hits the camel in the head and the camel gives the landlord oral pleasure.
The Landlord looks at the frenchie and says "You want a go?" to which the frenchie replies: "Oui, but there is no need to hit me over the head."
As I get older, I'm really beginning to resent people who are out of the loop making decisions for those in the trenches.

^No idea. Didn't take French.
Anyways, in Spanish: You soy Shadow.

Why are French streets tree-lined?

Yes. But you could take all the French mathmeticians and inventors and stack them up to the sky. And the entire stck would not compare to edision and his discovery of electricity. Witness his genius..

Translating "aspirant" to "wannabe" is an error only someone clueless in English would do as, as you pointed-out, it has completely different meaning. The exact English equivalent is, literally, "aspirant".
There is no "single term" translation in french for "wannabe", but most people I know use the term "wannabe" in French sentences. Here in Quebec, we simply call there peoples generic insults like "morons", "cave", "épais" without really any emphasis on the nature of their stupidity.

xtc28 wrote : How do you introduce yourself in French?
After 4yrs of French in high school... It is bonjour... Which is about all I remember. I gave up on the language as quickly after HS, as the French do in a war.
What are the two best things to come out of France?
1.) French Kissing
2.) French Fries
Niether of those two things came from france. The proper way to introduce yourself in french is:
"Don't shoot, I give up!"

I agree that too many points are given to when opening a thread, I think most "veterans" will only post once in a while depending on their PC upgrade cycle with either very precise questions or just "review my build". As newbies will post tons of sometimes incoherent questions, sometimes the same question in multiple subjects and when there is too many replies and it confuses them they will start another identical thread. One thing tho, maybe new threads should be question threads by default as I think most posts are questions and not people just stating opinions.
As for giving point for selecting a "best answer", not against it as it would also identify resolved threads and might make searching for solutions more efficient.
Being selected as the best answer is probably the most relevant one, but, as I said earlier, threads should be question threads by default otherwise it will be pointless. Once a post is selected as best answer, I would suggest it should be reversible. Sometimes, someone will post a solution that can "accidentally" solve a problem momentarily but it will reappear just hours after the OP enthusiastically selects a best answer.

I wanna know how many points I get for this answer;
and this one;

???
I OP alot of threads, mainly to give an edge here on Toms on whats happening, or going to happen, as soon as I get wind of it. Sure, 12 hours/days later they may have an article, but by that time, people could have already formed an opinion, whether it be about upgrade, oem, or any manu .
To me, this gives the Toms forums users an adge, and hopefully it helps. All alot of my OPs are just links, with discussion to follow, if its taken up, or I may have follow up info. I truly dont care about points. Its like changing the title from General to dickhead. "yep, hes not just a regular dickhead, hes a 5 star dickhead" OOOOOOOOOWWWW 5 starrrrrrrrs. I think theyre missing the point here

how about this one:
One user called in and was hysterical because he had a report that was due in an hour. The problem he reported was that every time he typed the word "the," it disappeared and was replaced with "I like to take baths with young boys" as soon as he pressed the space bar. For anyone familiar with Word, the cause was immediately apparent and is instantly recognized as one of the greatest practical jokes ever played: someone had gone into AutoCorrect and set it up so that the word "the" was replaced with the phrase of choice.
Hi good afternoon, this is Martha, I can't print. Every time I try it says 'Can't find printer'. I've even lifted the printer and placed it in front ofthe monitor, but the computer still says he can't find it...
