The eXample Cited Previously USed to be blocked where I work, but I'm not sure it is any more. I'll have to check, although I'm not a madd overclocker, so I'm not sure I'd fit too well there.

Crash is just over halfway to the rank after addict, but is still an addict. He has a custom title though, so it makes no difference in his case. If the points were purely based off post count you'd need to have around 750000 posts to be a Master.

EDIT: Well played there badge.

If I were running a forum, and wanted to make it the most helpful to users, I would set up the rankings so that my top 10-20 got the TOP designation and there was a meaningful, pyramid spread thoughout the rest. This would let posters know we did have some Masters and Experts and who they were as well as provide some measure, however imperfect, to let them differentiate the value of suggestions. Insread this board has a big crop of wannabes, newbies, scouts, and addicts. No knowledgeable people at all. How sad.

I think the better rankings would simultaneously encourage more participation by knowledgeable people than the new system.

I think whomever designed the system had no concept of objectives nor of human nature.

Who would decide who these "top" people are? You can't go by post count because some of the guys in the basement have massive post counts yet have not been outside their home for years except on the rare exceptional occasion. Wingy has a custom title so I'm not referring to him so much. Crash, as I said earlier, already has a custom title as well, so who is left that has a massive post count? Not many, and that is why you can't really have an automated system for deciding this.

I like the idea of "gurus" but as soon as you show "favouritism" there will be those who will whinge about it. There isn't really a silver bullet to this topic, but the current system is a rusty old nail.

I don't think this thread is getting alot of attention any more, probably due to the off-topic posts about the French, so you'd probably be better to send a PM to Justin as well as posting here. You can PM me for a second opinion as well, but any valid suggestions I'll be passing on to Justin anyway (if you haven't already).

1. Why is the statement that some have not been outside their home relevant?
2. You state that you can't have an automated system because not many have a massive post count. You are the only one addressing massive post count. While not many may have massive counts (I don't know and don't even know how many "massive" is) there still are some who have substantially more than others and a broad range in the number of responses per poster. How is using the designations to aid the poster helped by setting the ranking steps so the few if any can will ever get half way through let alone reach the top desingations? It seems to me that the rankings should provide helpful information to the casual user of the forum by providing some reasonable differentiation based on the current levels of posts, with some small group at the top clearly so identified and the ones below them that have a substantial number of posts recognized as being worth listening to -and so on.
3. I am confused, you state "you can't really have an automated system for deciding this". But that is what the new system still does. Having an automated sysem really does not seem to be the issue - the question is how the rankings are structured and how the points are awarded - especially awarding points to originators over posters and devaluing the responses posted before the transition.
4. I have no objection to THG awarding special names to deserving posters who are particularly knowlegeable and helpful. But I don't think this is relevant to the issues of how the rest are handled and certainly not justification for continuing a lame system.

Lets look at it from a proper perspective. The ones who have high post counts that are mostly socializing arent going to be the ones doing the answering for tech questions anyways, so, their rankings/names wont matter, nor does it apply in this sense if the system is working or not, one way or another, as even tho the system may be better monitored, as possibly the new system will, the others with high post counts will still keep posting and "achieve" certain rank anyways.
So, getting more points faster is deterred by those who could flaunt and cheat the system, as others have suggested, which, one more time, brings me back to, if it aint broke, dont fix it

I'll say this, if they dont at least change the names, in the english speaking world, the names theyre using now are denigrating, which in itself makes any one, old or new, take a certain mindset towards Toms, one that the owners may not like.
So, system change or not, the names have to go,period

I've never really got the point about rankings. Anyone who types really fast can get legendary status even if they type garbage all the time.

It would be better to do away with ranks altogether instead of giving false credibility to a few people who type fast. If your advice is good it's good advice regardless of 'rank'.

^No it's not the same thing. Most of the good folks ie. CompuTronix,Zorg, et al are veterans, they are well known in the Forums and also have pretty high post count. It's almost impossible to have a high post count and spread FUD because you'll be labled as such.

For starters, your post gives me the impression that you think I was involved in this change somehow.

1. jaydeejohn covered that above.
2/3. The new system is not based only on post count. It also doesn't pick out the top few like what you were talking about because of the steep requirements. It merely rewards lots of posting of threads and lots of best answers (and you never get lots). I know you didn't actually mention post count but that is the way the old system worked and yet that is what many people want back even though it means that people who just socialise will become "gurus." This is why I said an automated system won't work, you'd need to manually identify certain people at the top, which brings me to point 4.
4. I never said you would have a problem, but some who are "left out" may not feel the same as you. We can't reward everybody.

For an automated system to work it would need to keep tallies of points/posts in every section and assign ranks for each section. This would be pretty complex. Considering how some of the stuff around here works (or doesn't), I doubt they will go that far.

I finally made Master Elder of THG. Since Friday some 14,000 posts later and I'm good. Fourteen thousands posts is easy when you think about the 150,000 it takes to be a Tom's Master with the new system. I did it. :sol:

Apparently I lost a lot of points with all the suspensions and all the times I was 'babbled'. Is the 'babble' button still available to the Moderators? I hope not. 2093 points? I have been fleeced as a member in good standing of this Forum.

The first time I ws 'babbled' it was weird. I post to a guy something like:

"Maybe you should consider RMAing the RAM. When that memtest popup showed up stating your RAM was junk, that was a sure sign of the problem."

My message was 'babbled' by a moderator and the message showed something like:

"I'm an idiot with poo for brains, don't listen to me".

Every time replied to someone babble related that I was poo. Ther was nothing I could do!

There were a lot more old timers at one time than now. I rememeber talking a few left leads straight to the nose. This place used to have notorious gang in the CPU section. This place is calm compared to the way it once was. As mentioned, there are still a number of good vet's who may valuable contributions. They have been disrespected obviously. Amazing the 'other' hasn't seen more than a coat of paint. RC is there, so he must have negotiated for now.

I know many "Ole Timers" are long gone and the CPU gangs have screached to a halt (for the most part). It is sad to see such a good site turn to what it is now.
