Or is his name Iminitforthegihad?
Haha WTF I'm a Wannabe, I feel better being a Newbie.

You should know by now my strict policy against making fun of names prevents me to linking to this.

+1. I HATE the new ranking system. Some of the good people like Computronix, rubix,Conumdrum ,me (and a lot of other good people) have lost our old position/reputation.
The NEW RANKING SYSTEM HAS A NEGATIVE PSYCHOLOGICAL AFFECT. I some how feel "less" because I'm now only a "Tom's Regular" while I used to be a "Forum Master".

This people in charge of all this have failed miserably in their attempt to redesign Tom's website and Forum. The stuck jan. 1, 1970 join date was an indicator. Should have just left it blank. Duh. Now were here waiting for a French tech to let Justin know if He's embarrassed enough about all this to allow Justin to put it back the way it was before. I think they were testing the new system over the past weekend. You know when the entire Forum was haywire giving error on this page on every click. The message woulkd appear magically and every one double and triple posted until they realized the Forum wasn't really broke. They were fixing it? Once none of the Forums worked properly, the French guy was satisfied. For now.
Breaking news. Shadow, the funny thing is you will be a Tom's Master again when you reach 150,000. I guess that's points.
Guys this system has been planned for months and few have said anything about it. If you wanted to make comments on it earlier, you should have posted here: http://feedbacks.tomshardware.com/ [...] -for-users
I stand by my last comment there as well. If the "best answers" thing is so important then it should be more visible. Also, a person should be able to select a best answer whether they want their thread marked as "solved" or not. Currently, only a few threads are even eligible to have a best answer because the "I am looking for a specific answer" (or whatever it says) box was not checked. Even when it is checked the OP rarely selects a best answer.
If it's going to be the main way of earning points then it needs to be used. Right now it isn't, at least from my observations.
EDIT: Oh, and if you want to blame someone for the change to the moderator/administrator titles, you can blame me for that. Most people who've ever used a forum in the past can assume that mods/admins are long-time members anyway and I am not really worried if I'm not a regular, a scout or a master. It's not like it affects most of you anyway.
+1 shadow heheh
PS Reminds me of the old man tipping the lil kid at the lemonaid stand a nickel "here ya go kid, we all have to start somewheres" heheh
If they are really trying to make the forum better why cant the be a system put into place to better enable a search to find an answer?
Perhaps a forced search or possibly something along the lines of intellitext. We are forced to navigate around those damn things, so see if the can be put to good use.
When a poster starts a thread, pick out certain keywords and try produce an answer.
Lately the posts are always will this work, is this a good part, will my game work better with this etc etc...
If we all could stop having to answer grade school computer questions then and only then can the forum be what it once was.
At least I turned out to be a newbie and not a wannabe.
I know Ill sleep better tonight.
P.S. Some one mark this as best answer. I aspire to be more, maybe normal or regular
At least mundane or maybe even drunk
Hell, Im too old to ever be a master again, oh well
Maybe you can be a Tom's Old Fart?
Too late
Stinks!!!!

Kinda reminds me of the complaint process in Hitchhiker's guide: "There's no point acting all surprised about it. All the planning charts and demolition orders have been on display in your local planning department in Alpha Centauri for fifty of your Earth years, so you've had plenty of time to lodge any formal complaint and it's far too late to start making a fuss about it now."
It may have been posted elsewhere on the forum, but I doubt it drew much attention, especially from those whom it affects most.
I understand it's pointless to make noise
considering the lack of action on tools required to keep the forums clean of spammers making it more of a task than before.
It makes me laugh that we needed to change the colour for modes as if the names beside the forums they mod wasn't sufficient.
I'm actually quite dissapointed to lose my own personal title "Graphic Gorilla", and to simply be added as a generic 'moderator'.
If this is mean to increase contribution, it's going to have the opposite effect on those who found a comfortable place to frequent originally, but it will likely increase the number of questions as seems to be the motivation according to JB, however I suspect they'll be more questions like "who's better intel or AMD / ATi or nVidia?" and "What should I buy/add for my new PC?". That's not really a site I want to participate in, it's already full of that, and rewarding it will make it worse IMO and lower the standards further changing it from THGC to yahoo!answers.
Change is good, but it looks like BOM doesn't like what THG is/was when they bought it and wants to make it into something else, which is unfortunate for those who liked what it was and now is only a memory.
TheGreatGrapeApe wrote : It may have been posted elsewhere on the forum, but I doubt it drew much attention, especially from those whom it affects the most.
You didn't see the annoying "feedback" tab thing that scrolled down the right side of the forum? I had to adblock it because it annoyed me so much

You could just ask for that to be changed back I guess. RCPilot will have lost his Coors too.

Absolutely. It is like someone took a classic, well known hardware discussion site filled with history and a lenghty, respected background, tore it down and replaced it with what amounts to a cheap coat of paint. A new vision of a mod neo contemporary purpose has ruined what Tom's once was. That's what I call blind ambition.
badge your point in the works....... yesterday when you comented on my being a noob or whatever... you said I had 174 points or sumthin. Haha a day later and I've got like 474 points.

lol. I don't know about the site changes until it happens. Why? Because I usually don't check the feed back section (I doubt many did; and I have blocked it also
). Also, before Toms/BoM does change things, they should put it up on the home page for vote and a place to "beta test" the new lay out. Putting some thing like this on the Home Page as "News" is much better than some of the "news" that they actually post in the "News" section.
edit:
Quote : Anandtech Scout
Price less. AnandTech IS getting better every day. For example the quality of their testing, articles, etc has improved a LOT. This is the complete opposite that's happening at Toms. For example: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3575 was a very good one. Compare that to this: http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] ,2326.html
The Last Remnant should NOT have been included. Sure, I may be comparing Apples to Oranges, but fact is Anand and many others are improving while Toms is decreasing. I'm not saying Anand was always the best or they always publish good stuff, but they do try to change for the good and it's working.
Also what's concerning me most is if this is a management (BoM) problem or a individual author(s) problem. Until the problems are fixed, Toms is going down hill.
PS: Who owned tome before BoM?

Oh, as for spammers, they should be IP banned. Period. And I believe Mods should be given that power. Not just the admins.

OK, Why would I check the feedback section? Im not an owner/operator of this site. I only go to the feedback section if Im going to complain about the change you just shoved down my throat.
Having checked the so called 'Feedback' section who is the dimwit who named it feedback? It should be called New Ideas or Potential Changes, somethng that actually reflects what it does.

Then this.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom's_Hardware
I wonder if Justin is in the Marina Del Ray headquarters/office where Fredi was administrator before? I'd like to take the 20 minute drive up there and check out the beach rich chicks.
Hea JB, I'm liking my Wannabe "Badge" but when I am ready to move on do you think I could get something like Wizzer or Bongwater, you know something really along the lines that fits in with IT's?
J-off would work too!
Ok, maybe it's my RPG-playing nature that speaks, but I find the ranking idea not that bad in concept. But like many, I found the new title given to be a bit "diminutive"; I'm no jaydeejohn, badge or Shadow703793, guys like those made this forum useful, instructive and fun, but I would consider myself at least a regular. That aside, here is my try at constructive criticism for this new ranking system.
First, if points are going to be awarded by "subject", there should be an inheritance/hierarchical concept with or without different scales. Let me try to explain. Imagine something akin to a genealogical descendant tree of forum subjects with "forum" being the topmost element. Each time you earn points in a specific subject (sub-subject or else) some or all of the points should also go toward the more global "forum" score. This way, high scores in a subject would be regarded as a specialization and not penalize the overall status. Let me try with an example (sorry for the [ code ] use, but it's the only thing I know to preserve spacing):
Code :
|
The numbers in parenthesis simply means the score would be the sum of the children's score (and I just realized a topic isn't necessarily in "leaf subject" categories, but you get the idea). With the above example, the guy could still be a veteran (I know score to low, but have a specialization in both CPU & Components and Homebuilt Systems and with no extra mention for NIC.
On another note, I would also suggest to either divide the scale by 8 or multiply the current points by 8, this way most "old timers" will probably end in the Addict or Veteran category.
As for attracting new people, how about a forum RSS feed that would send information about all new postings (at least title & full category so people can filter by interests). For people like me who often just look at the "Hot Questions and Replies" section of the homepage because we are at work and don't want or have time to search for new topics, this would be a great way to promote participation.
This was my 0.02$, feel free to critique my ideas if it can improve them.

^You know that makes sense. MUCH better system than the current one.

Shadow703793 wrote : ^You know that makes sense. MUCH better system than the current one.
Then you can vote-up my answer
. Does that even give points???
The thing can be highly flexible if they want, I wouldn't even mind seeing "Tom's Veteran / <subject>'s newbie", but if they can, I would drop the "/ <subject>'s newbie" unless you reach the "regular" status.
As for the "different scales" thing I didn't really explain, I simply meant that for the forum, they could keep the 150,000+ for Master, but as you drill down into specific subjects, this number should decrease because no-one would ever be a master at anything.
I don't believe in problems, only in undiscovered solutions
.

In any case, the names NEED to change. The wannabee and scout ones are the worst.
Quote : But like many, I found the new title given to be a bit "diminutive".
Not only that, it's belittling the guys who have been here for maybe 7-10 years like TheGreatGrapeApe and others. After three+ years of calling this Forum a 'home' I am relegated to a Tom's Regular. I was like almost a gigalo or guru. Now I'm barely above a scout. And I need 150,000 points to become a Tom's Master. It tok me three years to accumilate 1700 points. A little less than a thousand times that and I will make Tom's master. That's three thousand years.
Anyway, we have Justin, GreatGrapeape, and randomizer from this continent. Jake Barnes left when He realized He had to deal with a bunch of French kiddy men. I think those guys have a much better grip on what would improve Tom's and how the forums should be run. But no. They have to deal with the French. Do you know what that's like? Well, do you? Oh, I forgot you are Canadien
. Have a crack a the French buddy...

Randomizer you are my hero.
I'm from Australia mate, not the US.
This was the old list. A good list as Forum designated names go.
1. 0 stranger
2. 25 newbie
3. 50 journeyman
4. 100 member
5. 200 enthusiast
6. 400 addict
7. 700 old hand
8. 1100 nimble knuckle
9. 1600 Honorary Poster
10. 2200 Faithful Poster
11. 2900 Ancient Poster
12. 3700 Eternal Poster
13. 4600 Forum Veteran
14. 5600 Forum Fixture
15. 6700 Forum Resident
16. 7900 Forum Master
17. 9200 Forum Gigolo
18. 10600 Honorary Veteran of THGC
19. 12100 Honorary Fixture of THGC
20. 13700 Honorary Resident of THGC
21. 15400 Honorary Master of THGC
22. 17200 Honorary Gigolo of THGC
23. 19100 Honorary Guru of THGC
24. 30000 Master Historian of THGC
25. 45000 Master Gigolo of THGC
26. 62000 Master Guru of THGC
27. 80000 Master Wizard of THGC
28. 100000 Master Elder of THGC
And here's the new list. This a hardware forum, a little more imagination could have been used when making a 'tag' for the posters. I'm still confused about the points and how the scorng is implemented. Hell I'm still confused how everyone joined on Jan. 1, 1970.
less than 150 Tom's Wannabe
150-499 Tom's Newbie
500-1,499 Tom's Scout
1,500-4,999 Tom's Regular
5,000-14,999 Tom's Addict
15,000-49,999 Tom's Veteran
50,000-149,999 Tom's Resident
150,000 and more Tom's Master
Note: I failed to mention RC Pilot on the N. American territoty side.
randomizer wrote : I'm from Australia mate, not the US.
You know how you grew up with a strict, formalized way of life and when the nuns corrected you in school and told you when to jump and how far? I wasn't like that.
The old ones had some strange post count requirements, unless there's math involved.
As for the 1/1/1970 thing, that's just a bug that will never go away....
badge wrote : You know how you grew up with a strict, formalized way of life and when the nuns corrected you in school and told you when to jump and how far? I wasn't like that.
So you were the kid stuck in the headmaster's office?
No randomizer]I was different from all the kids in my neighborhood most of which by the way really did end up in prison. I liked school. It was my wife who was a dweeb and became a doctor. I always let her know, "you are a dweeb bookworm until you met me and got a life".
So.. how exactly is that related to this topic, if at all? I don't really follow. I'm thinking this is the part where you will post a link with a very long text string.
randomizer wrote : So.. how exactly is that related to this topic, if at all? I don't really follow. I'm thinking this is the part where you will post a link with a very long text string.
I want to be a gigalo. No long text here. Hoping you can elaborate on your relation with the French guys running this place so uhmmm well. If you don't want to discuss it, maybe I'll mention your job duties to Justin in our next PM.
There's not much to elaborate on really.
Like I said, it's you and Justin, GGape and RC Pilot who have the best idea of what this site should be like. Not the French guy who apparently has no idea what Justin is asking or trying to tell him. Everything changed though. Someone on the other side has an idea that you guys are just beginning to understand. No?
They come up with the ideas, they implement them, we find out about them when you do (well maybe Justin knows a bit before hand since he has direct contact), then we deal with the result. That's how I see it anyway.
Justin has to explain that Wannabe, Scout and Regular have to be replaced and perhaps expanded upon. I think the guys in France calling the shots are poor at the business of administering, implementing and having a successful solution to all this. It remains to be seen. As long as their bosses are employed and the employed owners are making money expect more of the same. Too much change is a direction to failure. Wasn't the forum (site adverytising) doing well when BOM bought it? Why all the change including the topic of this discussion?
When preparation for the latest SBM got under way WE were asked for our input for the $1200 est. Lan Box.
I see this Forum going that way but not offically.
I, like alot of people easily adopt ourselves to the problem and not the solution.
A boss will say, I can make it better. Do it this way.
A Leader says, How can We make it better?
So JB I suggest a fresh approach with boundries surrounding the solution.
Suggestions are only useful if they are followed.

I agree, I sorta liked Honorary Poster, better than Tom's Newbie. Was looking forward to Faithful Poster or something lol.

Weird, Badge if your talking 500 points = Tom's Scout. Then I'm still a Newbie?!
I think I have like 520 points lol.
Yeah, you have 520 points= Tom's Scout. You will be so designated in due time. They haven't pressed the Total button on the point calculator yet.
After they figure out how to work the larger Forum buttons.
This site used to be run from Marina Del Ray, CA. The server was there. I am thinking...oh no! Now the site is run from...aw shucks
France! Run for your lives!
Anybody do a reverse google translation for scout or wannabe ? Maybe in French it carries more respect, and this is but a "misunderstandiiiing" no?
How the hell does scout translate into anything applicable to Toms forums? And as was mentioned, wannabe is just dimunitive. Maybe someone could tell them here, and elsewhere (outside of France) alot of these terms are considered racist heheh
