You beat me in having the worst post/points/title ratio I think.

Oh and reynod, I am sure that is a quote but can't think of it at the moment.

lol, yeah didn't notice that yet. At my current rate I'll be a regular for quite some time.

The veteran members were given approximately .33 (maybe less) points for prior posts to this new member ranking system. I know it took years to have thousands of posts. So going from Honorary veteran --> regular is worse, but barely than the 6000 points it will take you to become a (points) veteran now. You have almost half what is needed (2800+) for all you have contributed. All of this revamping of the member rankings is confusing. I see you were awarded the gold Admiral designation. Pinch me. We have figured out that anyone with a join date of like 1970 has the Gold Admiral distinction. No one has much of an idea what the merit badge in individual sections means. You have to accumilate a lot of best answer distinctions. Basically the nOObs get like 200 points for creating an account and posting a message. Then if they start more threads like, 'Help! My system is on fire!'' a nOOb can accumilate 6000 points is like six hours. Makes sense. :o

Hadn't really looked into this until today, but I see what your saying. Extra points for asking a question? Has this backfired yet with a rash of stUpID Question threads? Funny, me thinks it's the ones providing advice/support who deserve to move up in ranks. "Best answer" being use much yet?

Joining Honorary ranks was nice, but Crashman's "Master Historian" had to be my favorite.

I had like 8900 posts and was almost a gigilo. Damn
Now I'll have to give my account to my grandkids to reach it heheh or whatever equivilent they now have. I know Im only halfways to the next level, whatever that is, and I'll never make it there

There has been at least one member that has admitted to me that they were doing one-word "yea" and "lol" posts just to get to Regular. They succeeded too. Best answer is being used more now because about 2 weeks after you post a thread the forum automatically mails you a reminder to mark someone as having the best answer.

Personally I still think that Question threads shouldn't be worth more to the OP than Discussion threads.

I was well on track to being faithful poster but then ended up a weeny, then an apprentice and look like making Admiral shortly with some gold stars for technical excellence on hardware advice.

It is starting to reflect my actual career in the real world ...

I'd just like to add again that I love the French.

Thanks for the info Randomizer. With reminder emails and points awarded, I'd imagine best answer will catch on.

Reply to pauldh

What about those who vote for the best answer but don't know WTF they're talking about (ie half the people reading/posting in the hardware sections).

Sometimes the first 4 answers are the urban legend of an answer, not the correct one.

Anywhoo, I came back to check my messages since I got a noticifcation that there were messages waiting and of course, it was just the 3 telling me I'm a Lieuy (I was offended, should be Leftenant for non-Americans  ), Captain, Admiral, etc for 3+ years.
The thing that made me laugh was the bronze, silver, gold for the graphics section, I guess you automatically get the Admiral (can they track further back than 3 years?) but nearly 18,000 posts in the Graphics section (18+K overall) doesn't get me a bronze medallion. :wahoo:

To me it still comes down to this.... SO MUCH WORK & Change being put in place for such a silly thing, and with motivations that seems contrary to the general will & desire of those who call THG home, yet the major wants and requirements for keeping apace or even maintaining functionality doesn't even warrant a minor change and minimal work. :heink: :pfff:

Reply to TheGreatGrapeApe

I hinted at this somehwere else but I honestly do think that it comes down to the nature of the membership of toms.

From what I have seen long term active members are fewer than incoming members so this seems to be some sort of way of keeping people here.

Go to other forums where the number of long term active members is much higher and this wouldn't happen but they can get away with it here due to alot fewer people to protest.

At least that is how it appears to me.

This whole new member ranking system is a product of French owner jealousy. As verteran members who call this site home to some extent, the French have demonstrated their snobbery directly at us, 8000 posts = 2500 points. That sounds right  . I hate the person responsible. Has to be a French morph with a brain the size of an almond and two sex organs. To be successful in business you have to do everything possible to please, keep and get referrals from your customers. We should have been given full credit for our past work here. I would like an explanaton from the micro brain two twats who did this.

I totally agree, TGGA is the man. Example of how screwed up the new system is:

TGGA: 3796 points
OvrClkr: 7308 points (joined July 2, 2009)

The people that know what's going on know that pauldh, mactronix, et al are really the people to listen to. The people that are going to suffer are the noobs that listen to these people that have a higher standing, but clearly less knowledge.

Reply to KyleSTL

TGGA should also be gold in Mobile as well, no questions asked.
Maybe they should listen to us, thats been here awhile, as no distorted point system with merit badges is truly going to display our collective knowledge of whos who, since its been pointed out from day one their system is flawed.
Without question TGGA is the JJ of anything video, period, if not moreso

Just a question, but have you guys actually read any of Overclkr posts? Im not sure you have.....?!!!!! Yes! He posts alot and helps a good many noobs in the process. Does this mean he knows everything........ NO it does not, BUT it does mean he is getting the point across. A new member that puts in as much time AND good answers as he does SHOULD deserve some respsect of some type. Yet you nitwits that keep pointing out his scores against an older more seasoned user is just pure RETARDED JEALOUSY!!!! With that being said get your head out of your rear ends and buck up. Ive said this before..... I know it took a long time to get the rank and the respect the long time users have obtained, BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT A NEW USER CANNOT SURPASS YOU QUICKLY IN ANY FEILD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Son, I need you to understand that the points don't mean squat... its a system.. woopty woo...yea I have a ton of them due to the new system but that is not the point....

I am more interested in my posts and how I can help other's from throwing their PC out the window when they hit a wall, that is what drives me... not my points, I could care less how many points I end up with... as long as someone is happy with my advice I am happy..... thats the bottom line.... While I agree with the "from a given starting point, points should be collected evenly by due response/answers", I however dont agree with the starting point being so close together.
Take The Great Grape Ape for example. Hes by far the most knowledgeable contributor Ive seen in gfx, bar none, yet hes left with the same amount of points as you have currently. Hes been on hiatus for awile and hed most likely have more, but even so, is that fair?
He started in 2002, you started in May?
Understand, Im not pointing you out, Im saying, put yourself in these peoples shoes for an intant, and realize the betrayal they feel

Xtc28, you do realise that I and many others were once in the guys position, whilst I have been in many flame wars, especially as it used to be a lot worse. I have also been in many discussions and also helped many people out.

I used to spend alot of time in places like home builds or whatever it used to be called and help come up with specs for computers which would save them money compared to what some less educated people would post.

Does all that go for nothing? Does someone posting in every damn thread they can somehow mean that a newbie should rate them higher than myself when I have contributed far more to this site than you or any newbie here.

This is what badge et al is annoyed about, it is the fact that he has contributed and helped people and yet is being effectively slapped in the face.

Once you and quite a lot of the newbies have left, we will probably still be here. I may not be the nicest of people, nor the most knowledgeable but to try and say someone who has not even been a member for 6 months has contributed more than us old timers is beyond a joke.

Pretty much says it. I can not say it better. A guy is here since May (3 months) and says, "yeah I have a ton of points...that's not the point." That's what I mean. Thre months and comes up telling the veterans where to get off. Here is a take from 'the old days'. STFU. :sarcastic:

Ive been reading this forum for 7 yrs now. I cant tell you how much it bothers me that this site has fallen so far to hell. I come here now to talk to friends and give advice amogst other things. No! 3 months is not a long time....... BUT REALLY DOES THAT MAKE US NOOBS............ NO NO NO............ Again, I do understand your plight here and I do have some some empathy for you guys. But the fact of the matter is that the more you act like spoiled little rich kids who didnt get what they think they deserve........ Well then you end up looking like exactly that......... WHO GIVES A F***about the rankings ..... I dont and many others dont care either...... And the more we sit around here and fight about total BS the worse we look in the eyes of the owners of this site. As others will probably say Who cares what they think!!!!! Right? Wrong! These are the guys who are running TOMS now no matter if we like it or not. The system is undoubtably flawed but again SO TF what.

As for the comment about STFU it is comments like this that show your true colors. Keep up the good work guys and just stop the childish crap. I know this a hard ball of mucus to swallow but good god WTF is the deal. Most people here dont give a rats @$$ about the points, mainly the real noobs see it and they think its something to get on about........ I beg to differ here! Most noobs are hit and miss, out as soon as they came and these guys just want some initial help. I also see more good advice coming from some new guys than many of the old users here, and it seems that most of you guys that have kept me reading for years have kinda left the help o new guys. Then when a wrong answer comes up you want to chastise the answer giver for their apparent lack of knowledge.. Cant we all just get along and bring this site back from the dead. HMMMMMMMMMM Im really hoping so, if not I fear Toms is going further and further down the toilet. Help us all out guys, lets get this place hopping again. After all it is about us for the most part not the reviews right now. So many people have turned away from Toms reviews that its not even funny. Can we try to make things better or what?!

AND I promise Im not going to be leaving ANYTIME SOON!!!!!! So get used to my 2 cents Stranger/Badge

Well, realise everyone, its good to see some familiar faces from aways back returning and helping out in the forums. And we all know where they came from, or rather where they went, and have returned to contribute, which wasnt the case not long ago.
Yea, I stand opposed to some of those returning, as besides a ATI fan, I dont really care which is which. And so Ive had my battles as well, and yet they return, and the battle ensues.
Toms means alot, and if any of the powers that be sees this and reads this, understand one thing, having people return is your best asset you can have. Ive had my own business, and know this as fact. Having those newbie fly by nights coming and going looks like good numbers you can put to good use, but its us, the vets who put up with them, and hopefully solve their problems as well, and its us that continues to produce those numbers.
Like TGGA said, if it was important enough to create this thing, then recognize the model that keeps it ticking, and reward it accordingly

Here we go again..... Dude, don't throw gas at the flames here.... Do you know what we do? Do you have a clue as to what our knowledge is when it comes to PC's? This is the first time I have seen you and when it comes to calling someone a noob w/o even knowing what he has achieved here at Tom's, you are normally considered a "Troll" or a waste of time (in my book)....

Makes no sense to say that he will gain respect by helping 100+ users when this has already been achieved. I have helped waaaaaayyy more than 100 peeps in less than 2 months.... Yea lots n lots of hours on Tom's reading, learning and helping.... That's what it is all about.....

If you had seen what xtc has done with different pieces of hardware, trust me you would " bow-down " and not disrespect like you just did....

Don't try to be the comedian here, it just makes you look worse...... :pfff:
