I thought it was only Series 1's that shipped with a certain version of the
software initially? Or maybe they all do it, but the older ones do it with
less nags?
IMO, Tivo Basic is a better way to go for this application.

Why do you say that? The picture on that page is quite definitely
a Philips manufactured Series 1 TiVo.
I don't see anything on that page to say that those three boxes
are anything other than a Philips (Series 1).
