Hi there
Firstly, I'd like to say I'm no PC Guru, and I can only comment on my own experiences/experimentation, but somehow, I've managed to get my Medusa 8790 Headset & Amp to provide decent Bass in the Front Centre & Rear Speakers, using a Creative Soundblaster Xtreme Music Soundcard in 5.1 mode.....
Unbelievable, but true
It's took nearly 2 weeks of real Pain-In-The-Ass messing about with my system, but I'm glad to say, when I play Battlefield 2 now, I experience some stunning and mind-blowing, (literally), sound effects
Yes, like a lot of people, when I initially installed & hooked-up/connected my new X-Fi Soundcard and Medusa 8790 Heaset, I also experienced the tinny, non-realistic, Bass re-production in the Front Centre and Rear Speakers, which I confirmed with the Battlefield 2 'Grenade Test', as mentioned in previous posts
I subsequently searched endless forums and Creative support pages trying to find a solution to this silly, but niggling problem
I've tried most of the solutions - full, current driver updates, beta soundcard drivers, KX project drivers, swapping front/rear speaker jacks, re-direction of the Subwoofer, un-installing & re-installing the soundcard etc, etc, etc - all to little or no effect - except to really screw up my initial installation of my X-Fi soundcard, resulting in innumerable roll-backs and system restores
Then, lo-and-behold, after my nth complete re-install of my X-Fi soundcard & software, I was reconfiguring my Audio preferences in the Creative Console Launcher/THX window and I noticed that my Bass reproduction in the Front Centre and Rear Speakers was drastically improved. I eagerly booted-up Battlefield 2, performed the Grenade Test and yes, genuine Blasting Bass in the aforementioned speakers
Whoop De Fu@king Doo!
So, what's the solution then?
As I mentioned previously, I can only comment on my own experiences/experimentation/system - what has worked for me may not work for you - it may screw up your system as much as mine - so proceed at your own risk
Here's what I did on my last re-install, (make sure you create a restore point before any major system change/uninstall)
1 - Removed all Creative Soundcard drivers via Add/Remove Programs
2 - Uninstalled the X-Fi Xtreme Music card via Device Manager
3 - Booted into Safe mode and used Driver Cleaner on Creative Audio and Creative Audio Lite settings Drivercleaner.net
4 - Deleted the Creative folder while still in Safe Mode (C
Program files/Creative)
5 - Turned off my PC (i.e. Powered Down)
Now, the following operation is the important part and is the only thing I did differently to my initial installation
6 - I made sure that the Medusa Headset, Amp Box, Mirophone Jack and Audio Jacks were fully set up, connected to each other and the Amp Box was switched on
7 - VERY IMPORTANT - I DISCONNECTED THE MICROPHONE AND AUDIO JACKS FROM MY SOUNDCARD, (i.e. the Red, Green, Black and Yellow Jacks that plug into the rear of my sondcard)
8 - I then Powered up my PC and re-installed the soundcard drivers using the original installation CD
9 - After another re-boot, (I think), I came to the X-Fi intro screen and set-up options - this is where the set-up program asked me to insert the appropriate speaker cables/audio jacks (Red=Microphone, Green=Front L/R Speakers, Black=Rear L/R speakers and Yellow=Centre/Subwoofer)
10 - This is the trick - you require 'power' in the Medusa Amp Box and hence in the 8790 Headset for the Headset speakers/mike to 'register' properly with the soundcard - I'm probably wrong, but it's the only major difference from my original installation
11 - Voila - I had literally stumbled upon the solution, (for my system anyway) - I was absolutely gob-smacked when the Bass started working correctly
I would like to test this theory/procedure again just to be sure, but I'm really loathe to upset my already delicate soundcard/system again - I don't want to lose my precious Bass.....
Apologies for the long post, but I'm trying to be as thorough as possible
(This 'fix' has cost me nearly 20 hours of re-booting and re-jigging my PC)
So, please feel free to try my method above, but as I said, you proceed at your own risk and I will not be held responsible for any problems or crashes you may incur
Best of luck and I hope it works for you - Please post back with any good/bad results - I'll try to help if I can, (no promises)
Got to go - I'm off to catch up on my Battlefield 2 Surround Sound experience - this Headset is seriously cool (now)

(FelfyBF - BF2 name)
Really? I just installed the THX Setup Console from the CD I got with the sound card. Then I clicked on Bass Management and ticked, "Enable Bass Redirection".
Yeah Imperceptible - I tried all those settings,(THX, Bass Re-direction, Sub-woofer setting etc, etc), with my previous installations/experiments - with little or no effect
It was only on my last installation that the Bass actually started working properly
As I said, I'm not 100% sure how I managed to get it working - the only thing I did differently was powering up my Amp Box & Headset before plugging my Amp leads into my sound card
Maybe I was just lucky

"Man, I'd liike ta git a pair 'o these, but, I don think I wanna go thru all that hassel ta git'em ta werk! Mabey, but I'm thinkin about the TURTLE BEACH EAR FORCE HPA2 5.1 SURROUND SOUND headphones.
But if the Madusa's r that much better I'd prolly git them. At this point tho...I'm just not sure if it's worth it.

I find that BF2 in particular has some completely screwed up audio. I have had to completely delete my BF2 profile numerous times (at least 3x on different occasions) for it to re-create itself and reinitialize the sound and video settings for them to work properly.
I'd go with a more stable and well programmed game for testing, such as Halflife 2, Quake 4, etc.
Okay, this thread has been going on for over a year and people are still having problems. I really want to buy a pair of Medusa Headphones but after reading through hundreds of posts on the problems people are having, I have to ask a question.
Has anything changed? Would I expect to have problems as well or has the hardware changed since last year? Also, for the most part, has everyone been satisfied after a few tweaks (swapping wires etc)? Or are your problems persisting?
In the end, is it worth the hassle of the price tag and the troubleshooting?
Do I need to buy a certain sound card and if so what kind?
Sorry, but I read many, many posts here but I still haven't read anything to give me enough confidence that I can successfully troubleshoot the headset. Can anyone who is really familiar with the problems of the headset consolidate the abundance of problems noted here in this thread into a comprehensive GUIDE?
If not, at this point, I and many, many other people will steer clear of this albatross. What I think is funny how the reviews from actual buyers on medusa-usa are nothing but cheers and praises. Sounds like the votes were fixed...
And why in the world were these issues never mentioned in the article here? Many thousands of people have bought these headsets just because of that review. Maybe tom's should revamp that article or Medusa get on the track and fix their product.
I want to say i purchased the medusa 5.1's from the recommendation of the review. I got mine in the spring and loved them. And now am sad to report that the plastic above the swivel joint has failed. It cracked perfectly straight across overtime from normal use.
I have never taken them anywhere and always lay them flat on my desk. The issue seems to be that since i have a wider head it puts pressure on the point it contacts my head above my ear and because of that they broke.
I've emailed the tech support at the speed link website but I'm going to asume they'll just say they were abused and refuse to fix them like most companies do now days but we'll see. It would be great if they actually stood by their product and backup their 2 year warranty since the things are pretty expensive at $130.
Do not buy these pices of **** I had them for little over a year and they SUCK. These are my second pair and having issue with them now in order to get a pair that works I have to send they back to there company which is in Europe.
Here part of the email- We handle this on SPEED-LINK's behalf in this case, but you need to return the product to us and and accept responsible for the cost of shipping the product to us and it return afterwards.

Still no reply after emailing them this saturday, maybe they don't work on mondays?
I know everyone here has issues in one form or another with this headset. I feel however that it is simply a matter of what sound card you have and how you set it up. The key is finding the best possible sound for your setup. Onboard sound vs sound card, what ever you may have. Of coarse the better card will always sound better, but finding whats right for you is crucial. What I have found so far with my tinkering is deffinitely turn on bass redirection, and by turning all your volume levels up in windows and turning down the volume on the inline amp will help with the bass problem. As far as making it sound better in the center and rear, I attribute that to windows/driver issues. I have XP and Vista in a dual boot setup. When in XP the center and rear speakers sound hollow and weak. In Vista the speakers sound alot fuller. Bottom line is dont blame the headset for a lack of setup understanding or old cheaper hardware.

Gaming headsets in general are cheaply made. You never hear of sen gaming headsets failures. Best option would be quality headphones & a good clip on mic.. In computer terms.. Don't buy the pre made HP, Dell, or emachine.. Build your own computer.. Thats the analogy I would use.
Yikes! In 30 years of computer experience and knowledge, this has been without a doubt the most negative experience to date.
Based on tomshardware review, and tons of searching (even knowing the difficulties of others in this forum), I decided to purchase the Medusa 5.1 Progamer headset from Medusa-USA (NOT a US distributor, but more on this in a bit).
I received it, really liked the look and comfort (though quite heavy). I hooked everything up (onboard sound), went into a couple of games, and experienced the same as most others - no bass, very, very tinny sound from both rears and front. Also quite a bit of feedback from the mains. I tweaked, I played, I even customized cables for bass/center crossover, and never got positive results in two long days of tinkering. So, I contacted their tech support department, who told me these headphones would not work with onboard sound solutions. I then bought X-FI Fatal1ty Extreme Gamer soundcard, went through everything I could find (another day of troubleshooting), and still had the same results. So then I hear from a longtime friend who went through the same experience. Speedlink told him that they do not guarantee the same results with all games - some will simply not sound correct. Wish I had talked to him before.
I made other enquiries, thinking that the non-progamer would be better. No response, so I decided to RMA this set. Here's the kicker. It cost me $29 to ship these back to the UK (NOT to Medusa-USA!), and $9 and change to receive them. We are all aware of the policy that we eat shipping. At the end of the day, it cost me almost $40, or 25% of the purchase price, to determine just how crappy this product is.
How can you advertise as surround-sound, when there is a very distinct difference when sound switches speaker drivers? As indicated by the rather arrogant owner, the tinny sound in back speakers is 'by design'. What??? How is that to contribute to an immersive surround experience?
Oh, and the 'Vib' function? About the most ridiculous, distracting and uncomfortable "feature" yet experienced. When we hear a loud noise, or low bass, do our ears vibrate naturally? Just silly.
Sorry Speedlink and Medusa, your product stinks. A very expensive roll of the dice for most, given the fact that shipping must be back to the UK. A product that, if it works at all, must take great steps to get it to even function with arguably the best soundcard on the market, and a product that may not work with your preferred game.
By the way, I replaced these with Sennheiser PC166 - outstanding, incredible.
I hope this helps others fooled by the hype.
It cost me 29 bucks to ship 30 to get them ship back they cash the check still waiting for the headsets.
Hi 2 all of you.
I'm new here, and I just bump up into this topic, which I find very interesting.
I see a lot of negative replys about Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer and SL-8793 Medusa 5.1 ProGamer Edition combination.
As I have X-Fi Xtreme Gamer sound card, I'm looking on a headset upgrade (I'm addicted to fps games, and that's the only reason for upgrade), so I noticed these SL-8793 Medusa 5.1 ProGamer Edition, which is 2nd edition,so I was wondering, are all of this problems from previous version of Medusa, or it's repeating with 2nd edition as well?
I would appreciate any kinds of answers, because, I'm in great doubt, should I buy them or not (SL Medusa).
I like these Sennhieser pc 166 also, but as I saw on pics, it seems that mic is fixed to one position, so if someone has it, can it please, answer to this question, and, if someone is having X-Fi and pc 166 combination, could please write his impresions about sound in fps games (pros over 5.1 headset)?
Thank you, and I apologize, if I spell something wrong, I'm from non-englsih speaking area.
DO NOT BUY THE MEDUSA 5.1 They are bad headsets look at thses headsets have not try them but they are sold in the USA.

Thanks for the links.
These steelseries looks interesting.
Tbo, never heard of these edimensional, and I'm sure anyway, that I can't get them in my country (Croatia), I'm not even sure for steelsreies.
in viewing the thread, i found it suprising that so many people had so many troubles with the Medusa's.
I got mine from Speedlink about 2 years ago, as did a friend. they were quick to ship and everything set up easily and without a hitch. Neither of us have had ANY problems whatsoever with them. I absolutely LOVE mine. At the time i was researching, it came down to them, and the Zalmans... and everyone at that time was having trouble with the zallmans.
I used mine for about a year and a half with a 7.1 sound card i think by chaintech. (not sure at the moment) and now use it with an X-Fi Fatality card. no problems on either. Power supply works just as good as day one. Clear hi's, deep bass.
I play a lot of FPS mostly on them. To me.. every game sounds great EXCEPT Counter-strike:source. it for the most part sounds like there is NO bass in that game whatsoever. but BF2, BF2142, COD4, UT3... all sound great.
(mine are the regular, not the USB version... most people said to stay away from the USB as the bass was noticibly decreased).
Does anyone have SHARKOON Majestic 5.1 III, USB.
If does, it would be nice to write some comment about it.
I would like to know how do they work in combo with SB X-FI Xtreme Gamer?
I got my headsets back brand new AND THEY SUCK EVEN MORE .
Think this is the best, most balanced review I've read
http://techgage.com/print/speedlin [...] iser_hd555
I have to say, that at the end, i decided to purchase SL Medusa Pro gamer headset, and I must say, that I have no problems at all. At the beginning I didn't have bass and vibration in games and videos, but after I turned bass redirection on, everything was on, and working perfectly, and I'm very pleased with this product......
TBH, I haven't try the mic on TS/Ventrilo yet, but i except no problems with it, because all bad comments were on sound, especially on bass, and I never had problems with the mic on my previous SL Ares 2.1 headset (which I broke
), so I hope, that mic will work just fine.
At the end, I guess, it just the mater of luck, I got flawless product (atm), how will it show in the future, can't tell, but atm I'm very pleased with it.
I bought Medusa headset on 10/14/2004 and it still works like a charm. Maybe their QA has dropped the ball later, but I am very satisfied with my headset.
The only problem I have is very loud interference from cell phones. If a cell phone is within 15 feet or so, the headset will generate interference noise whenever the cell phone communicates with the base. If close to the headset the interference is *very* loud.
Anyone knows of a solution for this? I would think it is just the nature of cell phones to interfere like this.
To anyone that still has "no bass problem" the solution to enable bass redirection in THX console is the way to go, i have enabled that and works like a charm. To access it go to Creative program folder and chose Soundblaster X-FI then select THX Console, from there you would know what to do. I can't believe I haven't checked that earlier
see my next post..
This is probably the most truthful review of the Medusa 5.1 Home headset system I have seen on the net...
http://www.overclockersclub.com/re [...] home/6.htm
Sound quality is exactly as they say..
Set up is not easy and one can easily spend hours trying to get them sounding somewhat decent.. then you realize when you put on a real headset in compare just how bad those Medusa's really sound
I am an engineer and I know how to set up hardware.
The only thing that made them special in any way was the low end rumble kicker (which is missing the decent mid range bass).. other than that the sound was not clean and defined.
Any high quality digital headset will provide down to 5Hz and rumble without loss and all the mid range bass is included.
These multiple element headsets are a complete gimmick. They do not provide the same range and clarity of sound as a well designed/engineered headset, they are susceptible to interference, they are very poorly engineered for structural integrity in long term use (ears easily break off), they are analog and the amp is NOT an official Dolby surround product... its a cheap unshielded pass-through amplifier.
If you are looking for drop-dead, clear, realistic reproduction and surround, these two products paired up are the way to go
http://shop.beyerdynamic-usa.com/m [...] x-300.html
http://www.astrogaming.com/product [...] 40-MixAmp/
...and use a coaxial or optical cable from the computer for true 5.1 digital
That combination is as close to a Dolby Home Theater system one can get without spending thousands. Worth every penny spent too.
Dont fall for the gimmick! You GET what you pay for!
Buyer Beware
hi. i have purchased these headphones and i have an audigy2, 5.1 capable sound card. However, i don't have the front, rear and sub/centre outputs on my sound card. is is suit for my pc
I think I've found a solution to this after playing around in device manager.
I have a SB Audigy card on 32 bit XP.
Right click My Computer -> Properties -> Hardware Tab -> Device Manager -> Sound, video and game controllers -> Double Click Creative SB Audigy -> Properties Tab -> Expand Mixer Devices -> Double Click Creative Audigy Audio Processor (WMD) -> Select Use Mixer features on this device -> Apply -> OK -> OK -> restart
Before I realized that the mixer was off by default the speaker volume controls were only labeled "channel 1, channel 2" et cetera except for left and right. Now it properly labels the channels and I can tell a huge difference in sound quality before and after applying this.
I guess all these problems ARE creative's fault for leaving their audio mixer off by default! But thank God it's an easy fix. Enjoy!
Hey, I just got the home edition of these headphones, but now I'm a bit disappointed to find that they will not connect to... anything that I own, except for my computer... I had planned use it for movies on TV and, more importantly, for my Xbox 360.
Does anyone knows what wiring I need to enable 5.1 surround sound for my Xbox 360?
