An interesting take on 'rescue', I must say. Must've been thought up
by an American.

I think you're on shakey ground with Scottish and Scotsmen in that

Yep, very skilled at hiding when there's work to be done, then

The Dungeon Master's Guide Contains A Procedure For Selling Your Soul
To The Devil

While not the most common myth, I have heard it more than once. And I
have combed all editions and printings of the DM's Guide and Player's
Handbook and found nothing of the sort. Can anyone help me out here?
What could they be talking about?
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

This myth is somewhat true. It isn't in the PH1 or DMG1, it's in the
1E Monster Manual (p. 20).

"Devils will serve if properly commanded...(It also typically requires
a contract for the soul of the creature commanding the infernal power
to obey)."

It doesn't give a "procedure" for doing so, it just says it's
possible.

"Selling your soul to the Devil" appears in another TSR product: the
article "The Politics of Hell" in Dragon #28.

The PH1 1E Cacodemon spell gave a procedure for summoning up and
bargaining with a powerful demon, but didn't involve the caster's
soul.

The anti-DnD Christian fundamentalists probably mixed up two or all of
the above to come up with this "myth". A more correct statement would
have been "In AD&D, the players' characters can sell their souls to
the Devil."

"Probably"? These folks aren't above picking individual sentence
fragments out of context from their own holy scriptures and slapping
them together in ways the original text never intended to establish a
point - of *course* they mixed up all of the above. =P

Wow talk about a tangent. You are talking about prooftexting, which is
annoying at best. I have a friend (RPGer) who lives with some fundies.
They've made him hide his AD&D books and now they are bothering him about
his Buffy and Angel DVDs simply because they hear of someone who became
interested in the occult by watching Buffy (2nd hand anecdote at best). The
problem, as I see it, is more the villification of external things to excuse
our own failings to live up to our personal moral codes. Kinda like blaming
your parents for you being a jerk. Stuff like that just frustrates me.

I'll jump off my soapbox now.

Why would I want something that's just a re-badged German idea?

Yep. Those Germans would've come all the way round the world and
kicked the Japs out just to make sure of that.

They probably already had someone making attack plans to do so.

Well they might have been a bit miffed that we used our GMT+12 timezone
to start the ball rolling a day early. Mind you what we wanted with
Western Samoa I don't know.

Hmm. If the yanks had been neutral...
The Europeans would have been speaking Russian, the Japanese would
have been speaking Mandarin. We in the antipodes would still be happily
supplying the brits with thier subsidised butter and wool, what with no
european common market to interfere.

Meanwhile, South and Central America would be a nice place to live,
there'd be rather alot more South East Asians in the world, the middle
east would be ruled by proxy dictatorships (oh, that's right,
differences), and um...
