A P4 of course would not fry, but yes, the video and PCI cards would be broken, and possibly more. Unless you have a $600 top of the line P4, most likely that would be a bigger loss than your CPU.

Needed? No, I don't think so. Useful? Very.

In which way? That it's touted as something you can't live without, when it's not really that needed; or that it doesn't work as well as promised?
If you mean the former, which I assume you do, then I agree. Intel's thermal protection is a nice feature and a good job of engineering, but it wouldn't make the difference for which CPU I'd buy.

Exactly. This is kind of and part of what I tried to explain here.
Meltdown the troll takes that into account to spout insults at AMD when indeed the choice between the two when you got one that is nearly twice less expensive and more performing, is NOT to be taken into account with who's got thermal protection. In either way if I have the thermal shutoff, then so be it, I'll sleep happier each night, that's all! At the very least, AMD's solution does show the warning by shutting off, although in THEIR case too, a warning temp should've been used. I am guessing AMD mobos CAN use that warning but seperate from the CPU chip's technique, as my Epox 8KHA+ can.
BTW this is OT but Fatty, when I visited the Others forum to check out the moved topic in this forum, I saw you saying you were resigning from here, and many said it was April Fool, so were you serious or was it just a joke? I sure hope so, you're pretty much a very respected and needed person here, and your status will remain the hog of THGC forever!
