Lot of these are older now but still enjoyable. Have to
remember with strategy games, the gameplay is the
biggest thing, not the hot graphics.

C&C Red Alert 1 and 2, Generals - Strategy

C&C Tiberium Sun and Tiberium Wars - Strategy

Cossacks - Back to War standalone (recommended choice) and Cossacks - Act of War expansion to the original Cossacks European Wars. Cossacks, TA and C&C are probably the best RTS's I've ever played. They all still have active mod communities, random map generators, lots of mods out.

Cossacks 2 - Back to Europe

Gears of War for PC (not released yet) whole game is coop centric - FPS

Knights of Honor - Strategy

Attack on Pearl Harbor - WWII flying shooter

Codename Panzers (Phase 1 and 2) - Strategy

Company of Heroes - Squad based tactical co-op

Aliens vs Predator 2 - FPS

No One Lives Forever 2 - FPS

Faces of War - Strategy

Civilization Series - Strategy

FreeCiv - Strategy

Total Annihilation and Expansions - Strategy

TA Spring, the open source rewrite of Total Annihilation - Strategy

Supreme Commander - Strategy

Did someone already list Baldur's Gate etc?

Emperor - Rise of the Middle Kingdom - Strategy

Spellforce 2 - Strategy

Rise of Nations - Strategy

Waterloo - Napoleon's Last Battle - Strategy

Patrician III - Strategy

The Guild 2 and exp Guild 2: Pirates of the European Seas - Strategy

Warhammer Dawn of War - Strategy

Jutland - Strategy (couple games named Jutland, this is the one I mean)
http://www.stormeaglestudios.com/p [...] tland.html

Distant Thunder - Strategy

-------------------
Not released yet

Worldshift - Strategy

World in Conflict (not released yet, Sept 07) - Strategy

Jagged Alliance 3 - Strategy

0 AD - Strategy

The Last Alliance - Strategy

XIII Century: Death or Glory - Neat looking game but I'm not sure this
is co-op or not.

Left 4 Dead - Coop FPS

Co-op gaming its insane that people don't know what that is!!! this is the best gaming ever 4 buddies lan'd goign through single player missions together heres my fav's

Aliens vs Preditor 1 ( it doesnt support newest nvidia cards anymore but boy did it have fun coop fighting through canyons of aliens and bunkering down not too many objectives but fun none the less)

DUDE! AvP 1 Coop on Stranded was AWESOME! I couldnt get enough of it. What was great about that game was that the aliens had so many breaking points when you shot them.

I think there ain't enough co op PC games especially for kids. Surely they would sell more if they are coop. Especially now a lot of families have more than one PC. Also kids games like the harry potter series all run pretty good on older Pc's. Playing on two is far better than two people in front of one screen also, theres non of that both characters needing to be on the screen at the same time unable to move thing.
Maybe this is where PC games are going to get stronger now a lot of households have multiple PC's.

I think one thing that would help is just interviewers/reviewers asking the question - Does it have co-op multiplayer mode for campaigns or scenarios or skirmish? I don't know how it is for you but most of the time, in fact almost all of the time, to know if a game has co-op, I have to go find a forum and ask people that are already playing it. Very seldom is the question asked and even more seldom is the information volunteered unless the game is centered around co-op like Gears of War. They don't want to be asked the question because they don't often have it, but it sure would help the people searching for a game to see "No". It should be a standard required (if there is such) question for a developer interview or game review by a site or mag.

And all these magazines "best" lists? A modern game, say from last 4-5 years shouldn't be able to be one of the Top 10 Best Games unless it offers single and multiplayer campaigns as well as Deathmatch, random scenario generators and editting/mod abilities. Fine for the ones that don't have all that to be get listed as Top 10 Popular Games but it bugs me no end to see something missing all that called one of the Best games - unless it's totally inappropriate for those things to be there, like an MMO.

I think both Brothers in Arms games (Earned in Blood and Road to Hill 30) have co-op... I'm sure EiB does.

Guild Wars offers co-op MMORPG style, and you don't have to shell out monthly fees. Plus, you don't need other players besides you and your son, because you can fill the rest of your party with NPCs, and when you enter a world to do a quest, there are no other players to steal kills/loot. The downside to this is that Guild Wars has somewhat dated graphics, costs $50, and requires two copies for you both to play at once.

The Ghost Recon games, especially Advanced Warfighter, have very full-featured co-op.

If you want to play co-op in HL2, get Garry's Mod (v9 is free) and host a server in one of the HL2 singleplayer maps, then turn on the AI and just play through it.

Ya know, ever since I started posting in this thread I've been thinking about cooperative skirmish and campaign gaming again. I think what's needed is some sort of open source library somewhere of Unit AI behavior that would define how units should act in a game. Most of these game companies don't have the money or time to hire a real AI programmer and with every game, they've got to research and define and code how every unit would act in every situation. Units could be regiments or companies or individuals depending on the game, RTS, or FPS etc. First they've got to define the subset of units for their game by "epoch" or "age" I guess, ie: like Ancient, Medieval, Napoleonic, Modern etc. Then within each "age" by type of unit, Cavalry, Line Infantry, Artillery, Horse Artillery, Machine Gun company, Sloop of War, patrol boat, frigate, bomb ketch, ship of the line, etc. Then the activities, what to do if attacked by X and movement is Y and you get the picture. Can't just jump into it though, you have to have a group of AI savvy experts define the methodology and what categorizations would be generic enough to be useful.

That's the reason a lot of these games don't have intelligent AI even for single player, and that's the stumbling block for co-op multiplayer against the computer. It would take someone just working on this one aspect of it, for each developer for each game, a loooong time to define these things correctly. And every developer has to do it over and over.

Think I'll cross post this on slashdot and see what happens. I'll probably get insulted to death but I have broad shoulders ;)

Dungeon Lords is a good Co-op game. We are hoping they make a sequel. http://www.dungeonlords.com/

I am not sure if I fully understand your question, but me and about half dozen of my friends meet up to play on Battlefield 2142. You can join on the same squad together, and coordinate your efforts. You can then even then coordinate squads to beat the other side. This is all accomplished on built in VOIP, but an outside package such as free TeamSpeak is much better.

The game itself is awesome (perfect blend of military with future, but without being too "sci-fi ish" ). But the real fun of it is cooperating with your friends. Success in the game is in direct correlation to how well you communicate and coordinate with your squad members.

Not many games do this as well as 2142...

Please list the RPG games (or any games for that matter - NO GAMES THAT ONLY HAVE DM/CAPTURE THE FLAG, etc - that you can play coop LAN on. We are looking for games that allow you to do basically the same thing multiplayer as you can singleplayer - beat the game/missions cooperatively.

For Half-Life 2 Follow Freeman will be the best mod for co-op in my opinion.

Not only can play Half Life 2 co-op but also the single player mods for HL2.

If you own a PS2... then Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance (1 & 2) are one of the most elegant Hack and Slash co-op games I know.

You can even bring your leveled characters from part 1 to part 2.

Give Titan Quest and the expansion a try. They're great alternatives to Diablo.

Also look for the Alien Swarm mod for Unreal Tournament. It's hard, but a really cool game mod. If you have Unreal Tournament 2004 I think, then the mod is just free for you.

Left 4 Dead is super fun coop too.

Guild Wars is an online RPG, but there is no monthly fee. You buy the game and play online all you want. The towns in the game are online where you'll see other players, but once you go out into the world, it will be just you and your party doing missions.

Call of Duty 5 - you can play the whole campaign over LAN

demigod is fun as a comp stomp.

Commandos 2 had co-op campaign (Every player agrees beforehand who controls which units).
Not sure about Commandos 1 though and sadly Commandos 3 only has deathmatch and collect the flags.

You know, I and my dad (and uncle) also play RTS games in co-op only, and have been similarly frustrated. The list in the top topic is a good one, but I would expand it to:

Age of Empires I-III
Empire Earth (the sequels were not as impressive)
Empires: Dawn of the Modern World
Rise of Nations (Rise of Legends was okay, but not our fav)
Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance (for the best AI, use Sorian's AI mod, but it is a bit slow)
Civilization IV

Of all of those, AoEIII and FA were probably our favorites. To add one more to that, you might try out AI War, a cooperative-focused RTS game that I created myself: http://www.arcengames.com/ I got tired of waiting around for the bigger developers to focus more on cooperative play (the opposite trend seems to be present instead), so I created a game myself. The demo is free, and you can play with up to 8 players against 2 very challenging AIs (which you can tone down the difficulty on with ease).

this world needs more coop games. it's ridiculous that games focus on a weak single but strong multiplayer but no coop. wtffffff . do these companies think that we don't get tired of killing each other all day?? we're tired of killing each other, what we want is to team up with friends and kill other people!! these said people better be AI and there better be objectives and damnit, we need more coops!!! shoot 'em ups need coops too. i want to see a bullet hell shoot'em up coop by zun in 1 year time or we bomb japan again. and valve, i'm glad you're atoning for your sins of not giving hl coop with l4d but you better give us a full game coop soon or you'll singlehandly be responsible for setting the coop community back into the stone ages.

i'll be back in a year to report any changes.

RPG Co-Op/Multiplayer LAN Games

~ Space Siege (Sci-Fi RPG)
(4 Player Co-Op, but has Point & Click navigation and limited vertical view...otherwise it would rock-on!)

~ Sacred, Sacred Gold (Fantasy RPG)
(16 Player Hack-N-Slash, 4 Player Co-Op...also has crappy P & C Navigation and beware...Dual-Core Processor PC's ( or better ) are unable to Host LAN server games...ouch!)

~ Sacred 2 (Fantasy RPG)
(16 Player Hack-N-Slash, 4 Player Co-Op...P & C Nav...not sure about Dual-Core support for LAN)

~ Silverfall/Silverfall: Earth Awakening (Fantasy RPG)
(8 Player Co-Op, also has P & C Nav.../sigh)

Note to Developers: POINT & CLICK NAVIGATION AND NON-GLOBAL VIEWING SUXAZZ!! IS FREELOOK AND WADS SETUP SOO DANG HARD TO INCORPORATE INTO A 3-D GAME?!?!
