Yes they were, but Sonys timing was abysmal, and calling it abysmal is being generous. In both cases they bet on a market rollover long before the consumer market was ready, and as a result wound up getting the figurative "finger" from the consumer.
They essentially wanted to control Betamax, but JVC and VHS bit them in the @$$. JVC openly licensed VHS, Sony hogged beta. It was a shame, because beta was superior in every way (picture quality, sound, responsiveness) except for cost and marketing (my parent's Betamax alone cost $2,500 in the early 80s).
This all spells an obvious lesson for Sony to keep prices down and above all not seek to dominate an HD format. So far they done well, only Toshiba remains HD DVD exclusive, and only Sony remains Blu Ray exclusive. Everyone else is free to flip flop to whoever gains steam. Personally, I don't believe the new format war will be won or lost until HD becomes more mainstream. Both formats can find room in the small early adopters niche for the time being.
However, I think Sony made a mistake by driving up the price of the PS3 to pay for Blu Ray compatibility. Assuming people will migrate to Blu Ray en masse because of a $600 console (simply as an alternative to a $1,000 player) is no way to win the consumer's hand in the format war, especially when the majority have no HDTVs. People are used to paying under $300 for consoles, and they still can (Wii, core 360). I find Sony and Microsoft's attempts to market their consoles as "home entertainment centers" nearly laughable. They are ultimately toys at their core, and they will remain so in the minds of consumers. $600 is a lot for a toy. Nintendo, the old hat in this industry, has long known this, and rightfully priced and marketed the Wii solely as a console. The PC has more "respect" as more of a tool.
Bottom line? Regardless of R&D costs, the PS3 needs to match the price of the Xbox 360, and Blu Ray along with HD in general need to approach the good old DVD in terms of total cost within the next few years to get sold well. Both consoles need killer apps as well (HD Gran Turismo, GTA 4, Halo 3, PGR 4). I expect to pay $30 for a Wal Mart Blu Ray player by Christmas '07

strange to see someone actually p[resent facts in this argument.
i have a question- with sony going deep in debt and losing huge amounts of money producing the ps3, could sony kill itself?
lets face it, the ps2 and ps1 were sony's most venerable and profitable areas- is sony going to drag down the only thing they made money on by trying to push another disc medium nobody has interest in?
if the ps3 fails, sony could literally kill themselves.
- you dont need a 1000$ hdtv... if anyone else is looking for a good high def solution for the next 5 years do this.
get a pc lcd monitor that supports over 720p, then make sure it has both dvi, vga, and analog component hook ups so you arent forced buying the rip off 40$ a peice vga cables for the ps3 and x360.
you can find a nice 19' monitor at above 720p for 200 bucks, just make sure it has analog computer hook ups.
now just look your ps3/xbox360 into the analog hook ups, and the pc to the dvi, now you have a high def solution for both your computer and console for only 200 bucks =)
if you're anything like me, you have lots of extra money and will buy all 3 game consoles and a high end pc anyway- at least you can save money by only buying one cheap high def tv
- people might say size is a negative, but seriously at 720p you dont want it displaying on a big screen or else it will look just as blurry as sdtv...
at 19 inches, your pc ps3 and 360 games will look crystal clear, which they wont on a 40' hdtv.
Doubtful, Sony is a beast with many mouths. Sony produces movies, TVs, laptops and desktops, DVD players, MP3 players, laptop batteries
, digital cameras, sound systems in all their forms, and God knows what else. A failed PS3 would be a blow to their revenue, but they need a much longer string of screwups to fail as a company.

Sony's in way over their heads in designing the PS3. Spending $$$ to develop the Cell processor that nobody uses but PS3, while MS just picked up some Power PC chips off the shelve. I think the sucess of PSX and PS2 messed up their thinking.
Including BR drive in the PS3 is another blunder that does them in. If they lose $300 per PS3 sold, they'll need to sell some 15 games just to break even from royalties. And they are not getting anymore exclusive titles so there's gonna be little to differential PS3 from 360.
Just like there's little to differential BR from HD as both use the same video and audio codec.
Their biggest mistake is thinking this format war is bigger than it really is. It isn't, I don't think BR/HD will ever achieve the popularity of SD DVD so it is a war Sony will lose even if they will.
You forgot their finance division. I read that it's their only profitable sector this year.
When General motors was losing money they separated from GMAC so that the auto division wouldn't drag down the financing division.
.
Consoles are best for muliplayer. I dont want to have 4 people playing on a silly 19in monitor.
And games on my 40in 1080p LCD looks crystal clear... and you wont need to sit 10 inches from the monitor to enjoy it, or read the text.
If you have the money to invest in all 3 consoles, a great computer, then you have the money to drop 2-3k on a great TV.

The CELL was developed by Toshiba and Sony as a budget server chip IIRC. Not just for the PS3.

Yep, there just isn't enough market for HD, it's just so damn expensive. $2,000 for a TV, $100 a month for satellite signal, players costing $100s of dollars. Games will have to be the saving grace for the PS3, if anything can. Microsoft didn't break even on the Xbox till the arrival of Halo 2. Killer apps are everything, like I said. The PS3 needs its own "Halo", a Sony exclusive game everyone has to have, even for $660. Sony is no game developer, and I doubt any developer wishes to limit themselves to such an overpriced console that has already seen its initial demand fade. Good luck PS3, you're going to need it.

The war between beta and VHS is still contested. Not many will argue that Beta was not higher quality than VHS. That Beta was released 1 year earlier is fact. As to the lisensing issues, Sonys founder claims that was the problem, however, there are other factors that many people argue had much greater impact. These include but are not limited to:
-Tape length. Beta was limited to 1 hour while VHS was good for 3 hours. Sony did get the 1 hour time extended, but too late. As with many other things, their timing sucked.
-Player/recorder cost. VHS machines were cheaper to manufacture and cheaper to buy.
-Tape cost: VHS was cheaper.
Beta costs (machine and tape) did come down, even undercutting VHS, but too late---after they had lost the market. Sonys timing sucked.
Ive seen people say Sony owned the video market since it was Beta that created it, and VHS didnt get on the scene utill a year later. Ive always disagreed with that perspective and would argure that the video market was still in its infancy and its future indeterminate when VHS showed up. Sony had a year to entrench themselves and probably perceived themselves as just that: entrenched..with no need to adapt. They thought they had the market sewn up, but IMO the market was not yet established at that time. By the time Sony realized 'strange things were afoot at the circle K' it was too late and the market had established itself. At that point, all the fixes Sony tried to bring to bear were to little too late. They showed up to the fight after it had been lost...trying to force a market rollover too soon after the market had established itself, the irony being they laid the foundation for the market.
Thats just my perspective, feel free to shread it.
As for the SACD...same story as DAT and the Sony miniCD. All superior products introduced at the wrong time. I dont think theres to much to debate about that.

blue ray sounds sexier, but then again... "sony" does not.
| Quote : blue ray sounds sexier, but then again... "sony" does not. |
But BR stores audio in looseless PCM form which is better for enjoyment sake.
I would prefer an Open format, like DVD, or VHS. What happens if once Blue Ray is adopted and in the mass market, Sony decides to recover costs of development and ups the license fee?
| Quote : Don't pay any attention to HD DVD and Blu-Ray Jack. Holographic DVD is coming, and fast. HD DVD and Blu-Ray will be going the way of beta max. |
Exactly.
I was originally very excited about Linux on the PS3 (despite having purchased an Xbox 360). I knew it wouldn't be great for ordinary things because of its lack of out of order execution and branch prediction, but I though programming with the SPE's would be fun. However, because Sony insists on using a hypervisor, the RAM from the graphics processor can not be used, and all graphics are not accelerated. The video resolution is also limited - look at the videos online.
I have an Xbox 360 for pretty much one reason, to play Oblivion. And it's a nice bicubic resizing dvd player, and can download high definition content from xbox live without the gold membership. However, if I was a serious gamer, I think the PS3 is a better deal. The $500 PS3 is pretty much the $400 Xbox 360 with a blue ray drive, free online service, and a motion sensitive controller.
I guess time has shown that the future of graphics is unfortunately with neither the xbox or the playstation, but geometry shaders and the next generation of video cards. I think crysis is technically a lot more impressive than gears of war, and the art is definitely more appealing.

I'm underwhelmed by GOW graphics. Lots of big murky textures, same with GRAW. Maybe that's the way to hide 360's graphic shortcoming and Crysis will blow 360's graphics out of the water.
I'm more impressed with PS3's graphics especially after watching the Gran Turismo HD demo.

To be totally honest...I really don't care about how the graphics look, if the gameplay kicks ass.
Look at how the Wii is garnishing a lot of attention, not so much for it's graphics, but the gameplay that the games have.
Right now, too much attention is given to the how much eye candy a game can have, and the gameplay suffers. With FPSs, in particular, I really don't have the time to walk around and absorb the great textures, T&L lighting, particle effects, or other nice graphic extras, more than just trying to survive and kill those trying to kill me. Why do you think that CS is still so popular? Because of it's graphics?
A game with nice graphics is nice, but if the gameplay sucks, the graphics aren't gonna help it.
The first 360 or ps3 game that freely uses a usb keyboard and mouse combo will be the most popular game ever. I hope its UT2K7.

Your assuming Blu-Ray will be around a year form now (aside as a data storage format). Things aren't looking all that great at this point for it.
Besides that I guess it makes sense if all you do is game... and you have an HDTV... and you don't mind the fact that a year form now your PS3 will look like crap compared to PC games. Not to dwell on all the other problems with your "point".
So did Sony pay you for this shill? They must be quite desperate since the Wii has been selling out quicker than the PS3 despite the higher quantities avialable...

This is my first post and am happy to actually be a part of the team. I agree with many on both sides.
Consoles dont require upgrades for the new games as pc's do, but on ther other hand, ps3 alone is crap. Every ps3 i've seen freezes and not to mention the games are suppose to take advantage of 1080p, but when setup it still looks worse then xbox360 running standard av cables.
For me i would have spent the money on a new pc upgrade and spend the rest on xbox 360 wit hd player for xbox games only playing.
well, welcome new person.
I believe, in the end, PS3 will succeed, not because of blue ray, but because we need competition.
If there was only the Xbox, then where would the drive for inspiration be?

ROFLMAO!!! That was hilarious!!!. It's like that Apple commercial where the PC is crap and can't do anything without have to install this and load that, and the Apple computer is merrily doing its thing. Same with the PC and PS3, while your busy toggling the computer switch on the PC, PS3 people are merrily enjoying their movies and games.
ROFLMAO!!! You comment is definitely one for the record book.

Id Rather Have My PC Because In 3 Years When Your PS3 Is Feeling Dated, All Ill Hafta Do Is Add That $600.00 Worth Of Hardware Into My PC And My PC Will Load Game Levels Fater Than That PS3, And Even Better.... If My PC Breaks I Dont Hafta Wait A Week To Have It Repaired
we'll see how u like that PS3 when DX10 becomes mainstream.
Well i am not a console person, but as far as blueray and ps3 or xbox360 i think for future wise the ps3 would be far better then the xbox360 mainly due to storage capacity on the disks. Say right now xbox360 is 9gb and ps3 is 50 gb which will be better for game content on a disk.(not sure on exact storage, just example.) PC is way better in my opinion. I mean for a console to beat a pc, it has to adopt the pc hardware and software. Then they could, but more or less you would be buying a PC. Just my opinion, i really don't know what i am talking about.
Makes Perfect Sentce
Sentce?
And if you remember the XBOX using a GF3, was able to create effects resembling dx9 abilities, such as on Halo (remember looking at the sun).
I would guess the dedicated hardware will allow programers to create effects that will be close to, or just like DX10 (just using different programming).
Its one thing to create a game for the computer that has to work on countless cards, configs, OS's,... they are limited to a degree. When Developers are creating games for one hardware, they can "open her up", and not worry about code compatibility.. thus, games will look better then on PC for some time.
ps3 is not a worthy buy.
I could buy a x360 but I dont want. reason? 3 red lights. until 65nm x360s are out in the market I cant buy one....the reason of the 3 red lights i s caused by the massive heat gatering under the video chip, that weakens the welding of the chip to the mobo...causing a lifting of the video chip from its position.
I work in a videogame repair center and I can tell you: our shelves are full or damaged 360 because of the same problem: 3 red lights.
about the ps3: I´ve seen very bad thins like blu-ray drives turnes itselves into deadly guns, trhowing disks and hurting people, and the worst: when a ps3 gets damaged cannot be rapaired.
and after all this:
am I crazy enough to waste 400 or 600 bucks to garbage while I can buy a nice cpu? C´MON!!!!

Amen.
BTW, I decided to check PS3 out this weekend. It's no better than XB360 (even my girl was like "why would you buy this when it's no better than xbox?" ). Plus, there is already no demand for them (Wii crushed them when it came out). I found 2 out of 2 gaming stores in the local mall that had PS3s readily available. I guess that's why Sony analysts are bragging that "supply has caught up with demand", but in reality PS3 is a failure and demand has shrunk to next to nothing.
</rant>
BTW, I'm selling my PSP. Sony has pissed me off for the last time.
I believe the spelling is "they're".
To the OP:
Contrary to popular belief, PC's aren't only for games.
Now maybe the PS3 can do *some* of this, but when you say bubye to the PC, you say bubye to :
* Word (word processing)
* Excel (spreadsheet)
* Powerpoint (presentation creation... not all of us are in elementary school... some of us work with things besides crayons)
* Calendar + cellular telephone sync
* Photoshop/PSP/Neat Image/editing photos that you took on your camera
* Studio 9/Video editing software taken with camcorder
* Quicken+TurboTax/online banking. Someday, you'll have to keep track of more than your lunch money and you'll know what I mean.
* Polar HRM (Heart rate monitor) software for tracking your workouts/fitness
* Scanner+scanner software. Whether it be photos, books, or bills
* HiDef QAM enabled tuner/recorder/playback for viewing recording HDTV broadcasts on my 37" HDTV LCD
* Normal Tuner for recording/playback normal broadcasts to HDTV
* CD extraction and backup and compression to hi quality MP3
* MP3 management for MP3 player (ipod or other)
* DVD extraction and backup
* Maps/Mapping programs for roads/topos. Create routes/tracks/waypoints/mapsets for road trips and backpack trips.
* Connect to work so we dont have to drive in.
* Software development
I could go on. I have about 40 programs that I use more or less daily to monthly. Sorry, but the PS3 just isn't going to replace a PC for this stuff in the immediate future. Could it someday? Yes. Do I expect that day to be any time in the next 3 years? NO.
Right now, the thing is *barely* a game console. It's nowhere near a PC replacement.
