Now that I think of it your are correct.

I, personally, have a difficult time committing a purchasing decision based on the HD format as the performance of this technology roll out has been utterly abysmal. Won't get into a HD vs Blu-Ray debate, I don't really care I just wish one would win and get it over once and for all....

Don't pay any attention to HD DVD and Blu-Ray Jack. Holographic DVD is coming, and fast. HD DVD and Blu-Ray will be going the way of beta max.

I have heard rumors.... fankly, I don't care, I just want minimum 1080i to watch Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark. I barrowed an HD drive for the 360 and watch King Kong in 1080i on my HT projector setup. Jaw dropping.

@ The Industry - For goodness sake stop bickering and the money hording and just choose damn it. Then I can finally go all HD. Damn.

Agreed.

If console could be upgraded I would be going for them.

But a computer can always be upgraded. That even if the motherboard cpu and ram.

PC is not that upgradable if you want to stay on top. Out of the 10 or so upgrades I've done on my own PC over the last ten years, I might be able to port the ram over 2 times, reuse the mobo 2 times. Every other times is a brand new ram+cpu+mobo at the minimum.

The last three upgrade I've done:

P4+DDR RAM+478 MOBO>Venice+DDR RAM+939MOBO>C2D+DDR2 RAM+775MOBO.

DDR3 is coming out so next time it's gonna be a new mobo+DDR3 ram+new cpu.

I thought I saw something that said, at first, nVidia said it was a little less powerful than a 7800GTX, but then retracted that and said it was more powerful.

http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/9132 [...] orce-7800/

Nevertheless, still doesn't hold a candle to something like an 8800.

That is great! You got a PS3! I wonder if you got the one I took back? I am an avid PC gamer, but I use to be a console junkie. I have a long list of console that I have owned and I argued this same point when Dreamcast was first released. It was the first console I had that supported online browsing and online gaming. I bragged to all my PC buddies that I could do everything with my Dreamcast, that they could do with there higher priced PC. Well, that lasted about 3 months until i got a GOOD PC and saw the light. Don't get me wrong, some console's (Dreamcast and PS2) are worth there weight in gold. But a PS3 is not one of them. I bought a PS3 the second week it was available. But luckly before I made the decision to open it (I bought it to sell it, but once it was in my hand that Blue-ray player starting talking to me.), I heard about all the problems and I read about and did alot of research on the HD-DVD vs Blue-ray format war. Those factors told me that I needed to get rid of that POS... oops I mean PS3 before it was to late. Tried selling it on e-bay for what i had paid for it and guess what, no-one wanted the junk. So luckly I was able to take it back.

Anyway, in a year or so i will make my decision on what console I will be investing my money in. I love football and racing games on consoles, so I know a new console is in my future. But, the way it is looking right now, the XBOX 360 is in my future because of Forza, Halo 3 and the GOW series. PS3 will never have any of those games and in my opnion, without them and the fact that it is using the Blue-ray format, the PS3 does not have a fighting chance in hell to survive. Maybe $ONY will not screw up on the PS4.... maybe. :D

LOL I love the way you guys always take the bait of a troll. They come in, make there one post, then sit back and laugh at all the mayhem that they caused.

Mayhem?

Console gaming has come a long way, and this post has stirred-up some interesting debate. And there's been more congenial debate than mayhem this time, I think. Of course I am a PC fanbuoy (it floats my boat), and my sons get the consoles, so I try them out. A Wii is a lot of fun.

True most of the readers here are PC based, and it is partly questionable why the OP places his post here.

Likely the OP will put his broken PC in the closet, then pull it out later (after the anger subsides) and start tinkering with it again.

I hope he does.

Well, ill post my thoughts on this,

i have played on a ps1,ps2, i had played Grand turismo 1, 2 , 3 for hours really hours, like half a day every day messing around with car setups, well other then that it was both fun and boring ;-),

the 'Xbox' to me is like a stranger, plus the games i know of are on the 'Playstation', the 'raceing' games on xbox , i prefer grand turismo on the play station since it gives freedom to mess around and choose hundreds of cars,

Also i know 'Metal gear solid' , that was fun and it was like you were watching a movie, so i actually enjoyed that,

apart from that, i don't really care if the xboxs graphics card can render stuff better than the ps3's the xbox is a stranger.

Plus i would love to play grand turismo 5 on the ps3,race against others online prehaps with there own brought car ;-).

the play station has been around longer then the xbox, i think the raceing games on xbox is boring, i prefer grand turismo over them, because i like to mess around with hundreds of cars.

apart from the hardware side, yea it has enough grunt.....but you would have to have a 'HD' Tv -_-..........to make those graphics project the shiny stuff better,

prehaps the ps3 can be connected to a flat panel 'pc' monitor prehaps?

so i grew up 'playing with the play station' , so thats how i feel, and i am aware of the 'big titles' on the play station, plus i am used to the play station
controller despite its size, its big enough , the xboxs feels rather big....

Yeah, because the lower memory bandwidth and fewer ROPS.

Well my bodys 'dad' did not want to pay for a over £700 e6300,2gb ram,x1950xt 256mb sapphire etc, etc,, bleh, plus this operateing system called windows is blatantly designed to get people to upgrade when it basicly does the same stuff.

*sigh* yet another fun "console vs. PC" thread.

IMHO If you just stick with one or the other then you are missing out on a lot.

I have a "decent" pc (sempron 3000+, 1 GB value ram, X1600pro) that I built myself, along with a gamecube and I just got a ds for christmas.

Sure, my PC has much better graphics and can play games like BF2 online along with Doom 3, etc. But I have had a lot of fun with my GC, like with metroid prime 1&2 and I'm currently playing the new zelda game (seriously, I would buy a GC just for these games).

So really, there is no reason to attack someone for buying a PS3, If he is really enjoying playing games like "resistance: fall of man" then it was probably worth the $600 to him.

I'm completely done with Coke, I'm switching to Pepsi.

I own a PSP I'm still not sure if that was a good investment or not. I really wanted Gran Turismo, also UMD movies seemed like a good idea at the time.

Sony sells really cool hardware below cost, but they cripple it with propritary formats, and a completely closed platform. I'd rather pay twice as much and get something that was open. I'd pay $500 for a PSP if it let me download movies from dvds I already own, and download homebrew games without hacking the firmware.

Everyone wants to replace the PC with their own new closed platfrom (Vista I'm talking to you) but the PC only took off because it was an open platform.

The PS3 might even die because not enough people bought one to justify software development.

Reply to MagicPants

Now that you mention it, one thing I applaud Sony on with the PS3 is the ability to use any SATA hard drive with the system.

Reply to NotAPimecone

you need the pc for the mouse and keyboard, also for the exorbitant cost.

but also, 720p just doesnt cut it for me... i'll stick with 1050p

you pretty much have to buy a new pc every 2 years or you'll stuffer with ugly graphics or shitty framerates... which is about 4500$ every 6 years... which is about the same lifespan the ps2 lasted, which only cost you 300 at release.

but seriously, if videogames are what you do for fun, why not spend that much money for the best of the best... i mean, my god, we're not homeless people here.

I own a PSP as well and I don't really use it anymore. Sony needs to make the friggin' thing hackable, because homebrews are what will make it appealing and fun. (my friend has an old firmware and he turned his PSP into a universal remote... not incredibly useful but dang it's cool) :D

Reply to dean7

I'm just throwing these numbers out for consideration. The price point is really quite close.

pc
$1500 computer
$1000 upgrades over 4 years
$1600 games at $40 x 10/year x 4 years
$4100 total

ps3
$600 console
$1000 HD TV
$2400 games at $60 x 10/year x 4 years
$4000 total

Reply to Bass_Ackwards

1000 HDTV? WTH? If I was to buy a PS3/360, I would be spending more then 1000$ on a TV.

Also, to note, I fine the PS3s are not selling in my area now. I was at EBgames at the mall and they had 3 60gb versions left. Best Buy has 2.

Consoles and console games are great, but when you realize how much of the game you are missing (i.e. game updates, mods, the ability to quickly do something on the computer as your playing... the online community)... it becomes clear that the PC is the way to go.

besides... BLUE RAY will not PASS.

Look at all the other Sony format failures..
1.) Betamax
2.) SACD
3.) MiniCD
4.) UMD
5.) DVDA
6.) Soon to be blue ray.

It's actually pretty funny. If I'm correct 10X as many Wii have been released (3million Wii's to 300k PS3's) and yet it seems to be about 10X harder to find a Wii. At the Best Buy I work at we don't bother giving shelf space to new consoles until the've been out for a while because they sell so fast. But with PS3 we've started just putting them literally on the floor at the end of aisles hoping somebody will pick them up. No lie, the day after xmass (traditionally one of the busiest shopping days of the year) one sat on the floor under the PS3 display until about 2:00pm before somebody bought it. Pretty soon Wiis and PS3s will be going for the same $$ on ebay.

Sony's track record is nothing to write home about but this time they are mortgaging their future on it. They are practically giving away the Blu Ray drive in the PS3 so they will not allow it to fail.

I predict a stalemate ending to this war or maybe Sony will come out ahead a little. But really, even it Sony wins big, they cannot recoup the amount of resources they put into Blu Ray/PS3.

And it's a war that they lose even if they win. This will be the last time Sony has any say in the electronic world, sort of like IBM had when they introduced the microchannel architecture.

I never said the guy bought the computer at Best Buy. Not to get to defensive, but as far as the "people who work at best buy", it's more to do with what Best Buy (and pretty much every other chain retailer) offers then what the people who work there sell. I think a lot of enthusiasts forget that 90% of home PC users are buying DELL/HP/Gateway and other prebuilt systems that we would consider low to lower-mid range PCs. The store I work at only carries 1 PC with a decent GPU (7600GT). It's actually the people who work there who explain to people why they need to add a Graphics Card and bigger PSU to there brand new system if they want to be able to play games. Even smaller computer shops tend not to offer what we would consider a good machine. I recenlty checked out the local PC shop and their 'gaming powerhouse' machine consisted of an AMD 3800X2 and an ATI X800. Pretty much if somebody wants a good gaming machine it means either building it yourself or dishing out $2000+ for an Alienware or the likes there of.

Reply to purplerat

Although I'm usually in the PC camp, I'm actually going to go with DarkLord on this one. If he/she is only willing to spend $600 on a gaming system, a console is the way to go. I would have chosen a Wii or stuck with my 360, but whatever... to get a system the equivelant of a PS3, if the only thing you are going to use it for is easy gaming (and this is key), you'd need to spend $1k or more to get an equivalent PC. Not to mention BlueRay...

Hey now...I used to work in the computer repair center at Best Buy, before it turned to Computer Geeks.

Best Buy might not sell the best, top of the line stuff, true, but the sales people are there to sell, not give advice about how to upgrade this or that. I know, I had many sales people come to me to ask what kind of graphics card would be able to play blah blah game or do this and that. Of course, that was almost a decade ago.

Have fun trying to post on THG about your console games seeing as they DONT HAVE ANY INTERNET(by internet i mean webrowsing not stupid xbox live_

Actually there's a flavor of linux running on PS3 and Sony is even unofficially supporting it (in the linux sense, not the idiotic handholding windows newbs need). That can browse the internet.

If I had a PS3 I wouldn't even bother putting linux on it, its majorly cut back by the available ram. 512/2 for video, 256, then that gets cut in half again once you have linux on there, so when your using linux you have 128MB of available system RAM. So, it may have "Internet" in linux, but it's gonna be some laggy ****.

Reply to tpmeredith

Well, the PS3 does have 2 free DDR2 slots. You could put linux on there and get a pair of OCZ 2gb sticks and upgrade the PS3.

-> to note, its not that Us windows guys need to be hand held when using linux, its just that we have no desire to mess with needless complexity when we know how do bypass windows basic settings and get it to do the same thing.

I ran Linux on my XBOX, and the ram limitations really made it an ugly experience... though fun to do as a project.

They essentially wanted to control Betamax, but JVC and VHS bit them in the @$$. JVC openly licensed VHS, Sony hogged beta. It was a shame, because beta was superior in every way (picture quality, sound, responsiveness) except for cost and marketing (my parent's Betamax alone cost $2,500 in the early 80s).

This all spells an obvious lesson for Sony to keep prices down and above all not seek to dominate an HD format. So far they done well, only Toshiba remains HD DVD exclusive, and only Sony remains Blu Ray exclusive. Everyone else is free to flip flop to whoever gains steam. Personally, I don't believe the new format war will be won or lost until HD becomes more mainstream. Both formats can find room in the small early adopters niche for the time being.

However, I think Sony made a mistake by driving up the price of the PS3 to pay for Blu Ray compatibility. Assuming people will migrate to Blu Ray en masse because of a $600 console (simply as an alternative to a $1,000 player) is no way to win the consumer's hand in the format war, especially when the majority have no HDTVs. People are used to paying under $300 for consoles, and they still can (Wii, core 360). I find Sony and Microsoft's attempts to market their consoles as "home entertainment centers" nearly laughable. They are ultimately toys at their core, and they will remain so in the minds of consumers. $600 is a lot for a toy. Nintendo, the old hat in this industry, has long known this, and rightfully priced and marketed the Wii solely as a console. The PC has more "respect" as more of a tool.

Bottom line? Regardless of R&D costs, the PS3 needs to match the price of the Xbox 360, and Blu Ray along with HD in general need to approach the good old DVD in terms of total cost within the next few years to get sold well. Both consoles need killer apps as well (HD Gran Turismo, GTA 4, Halo 3, PGR 4). I expect to pay $30 for a Wal Mart Blu Ray player by Christmas '07  .
