Anyone out there got a A7N8X(not delux) that can change the multiplier of the CPU ? I have heard that changing the mulitplier may only be possible on the delux version.

I was aware that the 2400+ designation means it runs likes a 2.4 ghz.

I was not sure what wcpuid report with a standard MOBO setup. I want to start doing some minor overclocking and would like a good baseline before I get cranking.

If the reading I am getting is "expected" then I have my baseline and I can start tweaking.

Thanks for the input.

This thread, right next to, needs to be made a sticky.

Other than that, I'm having problems too.

I've got an old Geforce2 GTS working right now, but it does not like the TI4200 4x AGP card. I've tried two different ones; both are known to work in other systems.

Other than display problems, I've got some memory issues as well. My Geil stick won't work at 200mhz. It works at 166mhz, with 6-3-3 CAS2, but not at 200mhz with those timings. And it's supposed to be rated for that.

Other than that, it works much better than the Gigabyte 7VAXP.

For some reason bios version 1001G would let me change the multiplier but Windows XP and CPUID still reported it at 13.5
With version 1002beta4, it actually works. I've got my 2200 set with a multiplier of 14 and it runs just fine at 1864 mhz instead of the stock 1800mhz. Pretty cool.

Ok, other than lack of serial ata, firewire, extra lan, what will i be missing in performence tweaking by purchasing the non-deluxe version of this board.

I've just updated my system to the A7N8X Deluxe & 2100+. i'm reusing my existing hard drive & Win 98SE setup. I followed the instructions to copy the CD to my hard drive etc and send windows there when installing the drivers.

Now Windows can not find my video card and runs as a standard VGA at 640 x 480, 16 colours. I tried reinstalling the card & updating the drivers but Windows cant even find it. It shows up at start up (pre-bios) & other programs I have identify it while in Windows.

Can anybody offer any suggestions before I do a complete format & reinstall (Aarrgghh!!)

i'd always recommend a reinstall of windows when upgrading mobo and chip, if u want to make damn sure!

nothing.

Best way would be to format fdisk, reinstall.

Just curious.. did you reinstall the nforce drivers?

Reply to tomssound

Yeah, people who just try to install their mainboard drivers when they upgrade are wasting time.

It's one thing if the operating system was designed to do that. And it's another if they've worked out some kind of workaround to let you do that.

But, my experience with windows problems has led me to that. I find my time is better spent just nuking the entire OS, and clean installing in the order I need to. Granted, I learn some new stuff having to monkey around with the registry and files. But, more often than not, I'd rather be monkeying around with Medal of Honor or something, since I'm obviously not studying while I'm having to play games with the computer.

In one fashion or another.

Normally I would agree with every word you said Ejsmith, however its a little different with XP. Microshaft actually provides an excellent option in the install options. I talked about this somewhere else but I'll recap for those who don't know about it.

With the prior versions of Windows, when doing a major upgrade like a new motherboard, to get it stable, you almost have no choice but to format and start fresh. XP gives you a repair option that should be called "Renew" or "Replace" instead. When you boot from the XP cd, choose Install at the first option, NOT repair. After it searches your hard drives, it then gives you the options to do a fresh install or repair the existing install. This repair option keeps your existing program settings but deletes the entire Windows XP installation and reinstalls from the CD giving you fresh OS registry settings and proper drivers while maintaining all your programs and personal settings. I didn't believe that it would work but I went from an Intel P3/866 with an Intel 815 chipset and PC133 ram to an AMD 2200+, Asus A7N8X, and PC3200 as well as some new peripherals and it works 100% stable with all benchmarks on par. I still have trouble accepting the fact that it worked, heh. So, if you have XP and you're upgrading, give this method a shot. If for some reason it doesn't work you can always wipe and start clean, but it might save you a real headache. Sorry this doesn't help you people stuck in the past with a Win9X flavor. :) (I don't know if this is an option in Win2k)

I agree with EJ. You can believe Microsoft's propaganda if you want to. For me I've never built without a squeaky clean install. Your looking at problems head long in the end.

Another thing is with burners so cheap, why a clean install scares the hell out of people is beyond me.

I clean install if I even think I'm slowing down.

I'm still learning & having fun doing it!!!!!!

how can i find the WCPUID reports and see what my system is running at. I have the a7n8x, athlon 2100xp

Reply to bonepony

Thanks to all for their comments. After posting I bit the bullet & went & bought XP. Here's hoping the complete fresh install & upgrade to XP helps sort it out

Reply to funtimesman

Propaganda had nothing to do with it. As a matter of fact, I did it purely as an experiment in laziness after a friend told me it was possible. I was prepared to format and start fresh. Things change, software gets updated and believe it or not, sometimes it actually works, even if it is a Microsoft product. As of today, my system has been 100% stable for three weeks since the "experiment" without a single BSOD or crash of any kind. All benchmarks are on par, the registry is free of any obvious leftovers, and my new baby screams. I know I'm wasting my breath and getting off topic so I'll sum it all up. It comes down to people who know what they are doing and those that don't.

WCPUID is a program, just download it and run it. You can find just by searching on google or whatever. It will show your systems speed directly.

Wondering if any of you guys can find out what I am doing wrong because I cant OC my system.

Ok first off I set it so that it would boot with all errors so that when I OC it will boot. Then I change the Multi and the FSB and no matter what I put in for the multi or the FSB my computer sets the multi back to 15 and sets my FSB to 100 when I check it with WCPUID. No matter what bios I use it always sets my Multi to 15 and My FSB to 100. I have tried a number of diffrent Multies and FSB settings and same results. I took apart my Comp and took a look at the CPU and it is unlocked. I posted this in CPU overclocking and no one there knows what the problem is.

Thanks for your time

I need a little help and all these posts are getting me confused. I just bought A7N8X non deluxe with a 2100 xp chip and DDR400 215 mg Kingston mem. Mem is loaded into slot 1 (black). Bios vers is an8b1002.003. I can't seem to get the memory to 400MHz. Anything over 200 and the pc won't boot and I have to clear the cmos. I've played with all the settings and can't seem to get it right. Is there anyplace that has a list of settings to use? I also have win2k pro sp3, WD 80 meg special ed. hd and a radeon 9000 pro 128 meg vid card.

Also I read somewhere that win2k doesn't support ATA 100. Is that true? Any help appreciated!

what are you expecting to get it up to? Sometimes overclocking doesn't work. You may have to raise the CL if you want to raise the speed.

I've also been having enough problem with my A7N8X so that here I am, wondering hopw they managed to have 0 problem in the article where they used it here... with an almost identical setup as mine!

I"ve experienced various lockups and reboots, and Internet Explorer randomly crashes (No, I won't rant agains MS just yet). After reading this thread, I did change my two memory DIMMS to the blue slots and it did help a bit in some games (crashes less)

someone also suggested that I disable auto reboot on system crashes, and I was able to get a BSOD saying IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. (I also some others that I forgot to write down)

Here's the config

Athlon XP 2700+
A7N8X Deluxe with BIOS 1001G (I did also try the 1001E)
2 x 256MB Corsair XMS DDR333 (PC2700) in the blue slots :P
Volcano 9 CPU cooler
Antec TRUE430 PSU that gives ncredibly steady voltage readings (I monitored thos after someone suggested it might be an issue)
ATI All In Wonder 9700 video card with catalyst 3.0 drivers
Windows 2000 Pro SP3
IE 6 SP1

Questions? Suggestions...

I'm not trying to overclock it or anything, just get it where it's supposed to be. The cpu is where it should be (1.73MHz) the fsb is 266, but the memory is only at 200. I'm not getting anywhere near what I should (at least I think so..)

Reply to McGrupp2000

200 is where it should be. DDR is 2*200 = 400

It's always the one thing you never suspected.

Reply to jlanka

Well I don't know how I don't know why but now I can OC perfectly. One minute I was trying out all diffrent kinds of things, trying to get it to work going thought the bois trying all diffrent multies and fsb and got piss after finding out that 7.5 and 9.5 worked but only with low Fsb I had no clue why so I went over almost all the things I could handle before I almost exploded. Then I took out the motherboard took off the heat sink again and took a look at the CPU again just to make sure I didn't miss anything before and seeing that I didn't, I put it back in put the heat sink back on and started up the computer and started checking things out trying things in the bois again messing around with the Multi and when I started checking out the multies that didn't work before they work and now I have my 2400 OCed to a 2800 :) and Im going to push it to about as far as I can.

Thanks for the help you guys have been great :)

With question to getting CL2 RAM, is it recommended to get a branded one such as Corsair or any budget CL2 RAM would be sufficient, pros? cons?

Reply to pietist

branded (Corsair etc.) is always better. My personal philosophy is to never be cheap on RAM. It will always bite you in the a$$.

It's always the one thing you never suspected.

Reply to jlanka

Hello.

You can say that on *every* single part, except the processor. And even then, there's good dealers and bad dealers.

But, I will agree to this extent. It's better to "support" the people you know are putting out good ram.

Taiwan doesn't check it's stuff anymore. The Geil stuff (that you buy off the shelf, not the samples they send in for reviews) is most likely overclocked.

hi. this morning, i turned on my a7n8x computer and
could not get past "Verifying VMI Pool Data...". I tried
several things that i found searching the web, including
reseting my CMOS, manually setting various HDD parameters.
thus far, i have not been able to boot from HD or from
CDROM, but was able to boot from a old floppy with win98SE.
i'm out of ideas how to fix this.

my system is about 1 1/2 months old, i did not install any
new hardware or software just before this happen, all i
did do some websurfing the night before. i'm running
windows XP.

Has anyone tried it with OCZ PC3200 (oCZ ddr pc3200 512mb cl 2-3-3 2t timings), is it better than corsair parts?

I have a non dlx and I have changed the multiplier.
xp1700 @1666 12.5x133. I need faster memory. I like this board.

to Peitist. Anything from Corsair, OCZ, Samsung, Geil, Crucial memory. is high quality stuff. Kingmax is also decent but I find it hard to get it in Cas 2!

I just purchased the A7N8X deluxe and tried it with 1x Corsair 256 PC2700 cl2 XMS RAM. It never posted, and , being new to this whole process of building a computer system, I RMA'd my motherboard. Got my new mobo, and still, it wouldn't post. Now, I saw your post, followed some other suggestions and purchased Corsair 256 PC2700LLPT Ram. I hope this works. My question is whether or not I can try putting both types of memory in together to get the Dual DDR option going? Will one stick of CL2 work together with 1 stick of LLPT? I would hate to have paid for a useless 256 of cl2 RAM.
Thanks for any input.
